Ford Motor Co. Sells Sulphate of Ammonia "The Ford Motor Company, announces that the production of sulphate of ammonia has now reached the point where a limited quantity can be obtained for his territory," says George Dunton, local dealer, and the distribution will be practically at cost. "Ammonium sulphate is a by-product of the coke ovens. It is a white, crystalline substance, known as the best source of available nitrogen for stimulating plant growth. Ford Ammonium Sulphate is guaranteed more than 25 percent Ammonia, and 20.8 percent available nitrogen. (Nitrate of sado, the next best carrier of nitrogen, though better known, contains only 15 percent to 16 percent available nitrogen. "Nitrogen, the main constituent, ammonia, undoubtedly exerts more influence on the earliness quality and yield of vegetables than any other plant food element. It may be applied as a soil top dressing, drilled or broadcasted and harrowed in. The usual amount to apply is 100 lbs per acre under normal conditions. It gives excellent results in fertilization of orchards and groves, as well as being valuable for grain, grass and corn. Ford ammonium sulphate with vegetables and truck crops. It can be dissolved in water, one teaspoonful per gallon, for greenhouse, garden or home use. "This sulphate can be used sparingly, being much more economical for the rancher and citrus grower, as it is a very highly concentrated carrier of nitrogen, and sufficient of potash and phosphates should be present in the soil to support the increased growth which will accrue from its use. Ford ammonium sulphate is offered solely as a carrier of nitrogen, and in this respect, 100 pounds contain as much nitrogen as 132 pounds of Nitrate of Soda; 290 pounds of Cotton Seed Meal; 1,600 pounds ordinary fertilizer; or 4,000 pounds good stable manure." Mr. Roland S. Vaile, assistant professor of Orchard management of the university citrus experiment station, at Riverside, says, "From our point of view there is ample opportunity for the further use of sulphate of ammonia in citrus orchards. We from its use. We believe this to be a very desirable form of nitrogen, and we further believe that citrus growers in general should apply more nitrogen than they have in the past. Under our Southern California conditions, Sulphate of Ammonia should always be used in conjunction with some policy that will maintain a high organic content in the soil. The use of cover crops or bulky organic manure is used in this connection." The allotment of ammonium sulphate for Orange County will depend on requests made by the ranchers and all of those who will want a supply any time during the current year are requested to communicate with George Dunton.
