NORWALK CO. HOLDS 21 BASIC PATENTS Calling attention to 21 essential patents which the Norwalk Tire Co., possesses, F. S. Dunlop declared that this concern had an unquestioned right to the patented claim of uniformity. Uniformity is the slogan of the company. These manufacturers are offering $10,000, or $100 per tire, for every tire of 100 of any make that can be found in as good condition after usage as the Norwalk. An additional $10,000 is given in a lump sum. The more we know about husbands, the less we think of woman's intuition. Well; a good rain when the team is at home saves many an office boy's grandmother. Willard Has Both —as good a wood-insulated battery as can be built. —and the still better Willard with Threaded Rubber Insulation. Whatever your car, we have the right battery at the right price for YOU. WILLARD SERVICE STATION WARM SPELL BOOSTS PURCHASE OF TIRES The warm wave of the last few days has boosted the buying of tires and tubes, says Fred James, the Vulcanized. The temperature is having its effect on tires that are not in condition and hundreds are preparing to go on camping or on long trips, James declares. One day this week no less than 25 cars were seen halted between Anaheim and Long Beach, changing tires, due principally to the warm weather, according to a report reaching James. NEW CARBURETOR ON CADILLAC 61 Since the introduction of the first Type 61 Cadillac, this new system of carburetion has been a growing source of satisfaction to Cadillac owners, says the Cadillac Garage Co., Cadillac and Hup distributors. Something new in transmission gear manufacture has been achieved by the introduction of 30 new grinding machines, developed exclusively in the Cadillac plant at Detroit and now used in grinding all the gear-in the transmission to exceeding 9 fine limits. This change provides greater smoothness of operation, remarkable quietness, and also gives more uniform bearing surface. Other hanges in the transmission assembly afford even greater rigidity; and the increasing of the size of the gear hubs is noted as one of the refinements. The crankshaft of the V-type eight cylinder engine is from its very nature unusually short and rigid. But even here advanced machine methods and improved testing apparatus have been installed to produce maximum rigidity and perfect alignment and balance. The cooling system has been improved by a finer adjustment of the thermostatic control of the water pumps. The thermostat valve has been changed by removing the spring from its top and making the Sylphon thermostat an integral part of it. Chassis improvements, many of them minute in themselves, but each instaled to give greater strength, greater smoothness, quietness or comfort, are important on account of the fact that they are refinements upon a type which has been universally accepted as the greatest mec- FACTORY BUILDING 100,000TH "The 100,000th car Durant organization would seem to be in present-day production all lines of industry, of passing interest. Los Angeles St. Phone 489 Willard Batteries The acknowledged leader of wood-separator batteries for fifteen years. The Threaded Rubber Battery that created a new standard of battery value. The cooling system has been improved by a finer adjustment of the thermostat control of the water pumps. The thermostat valve has been changed by removing the spring from its top and making the Sylphon thermostat an integral part of it. Chassis improvements, many of them minute in themselves, but each instaled to give greater strength, greater smoothness, quietness or comfort, are important on account of the fact that they are refinements upon a type which has been universally accepted as the greatest mechanical and sales success among Cadillac's V-type, eight cylinder engines. Spring leaves, for example, are now ground across the width and the ends to minimize wear at the spring end and eliminate the chance for noise or snapping. The general appearance of the Type 61 bodies remains practically unchanged. A Cadillac quality trunk of large capacity, manufactured in the Cadillac factory, has been added as standard equipment on the phaeton, sedan and landau sedan. The rear seat of the touring car is two inches wider. A new type deck chair is being furnished as special equipment in the roadster; and in the phaeton and touring car the tonneau light has been moved from the center of the back of the front seat to the right side. Among the closed models, the sedan has an improved foot rest, adjustable to three positions the steering wheel has been slightly raised in both the open and closed type limousine, to give greater clearance, and lowered in the suburban to the same level as in the other closed models. A new type door lock is in use on all closed models, and a new design of interior hardware in the victoria. KU KLUX KLAN WINS CHICAGO, May 12—(Ins)—The Ku Klux Klan today won a clean cut victory over the organizations and individuals connected with the publication of Tolerance, an anti-Klan week-ly, Judge George A. Carpentter in Federal court granted the Klan an injunction restraining the publishers of Tolerance from publishing lists of Klan membership including a list of 12,200 alleged Indianapolis Klansmen. The court ruled that the lists had been obtained by theft and fraud and also ordered the publishers to return to the Klan all records, regalia and other secrets of the Klan now in possession of the publishers. This in itself would seem to be, in consideration of present-day production schedules in all lines of industry, only a matter of passing interest. However, these production figures transform themselves into an achievement which is truly extraordinary, when it is known that these cars were produced in the first 16½ months of the Durant organization's existence!" says a prominent Durant official, according to Jim Appleby, Durant distributor in Orange-co. "Never before in the history of the automobile industry has a new organization manufactured and marketed anywhere near this number of cars in anywhere near this period of time. Of the largest automotive manufacturers, whose products have been in great demand since the early days of the industry, the majority of them were from five to ten years in active operation before their total production reached this figure." "Pages might be written regarding the superior features of Durant-built cars and the unusual value they afford. A great deal might be said of the wonderful organization which W. C. Durant has welded together in these few short months—and of the great success which has met its efforts. Nothing, however, so truly reveals the real worth of the organization and its products as this production just recorded. It speaks for their excellence and the recognition which has been accorded them as nothing else could." Another good intelligence test is an advertisement of something that will make you beautiful in six weeks. Hudson and Essex Show Space Doubled Taking over the space at 226 So. Los Angeles-st formerly used by Earl Parris, G. C. Griffith, branch manager of Townsend and Medbery, Hudson and Essex distributors, this week doubled his display room. He also will open a service department in the rear of the building. Parris has gone or is going on a long motor trip to a destination not yet announced. He will resume business in Anaheim when he returns. The added space enable Griffith to show off his handsome cars to much better advantage than before. He can display three or possibly four cars at the show windows and many others immediately behind them. DODGE STURDINESS IS AID TO CAMPER Get a sturdy, substantial car if you are going to adventure. Into the mountains, one that can be overloaded without danger of breaking down, advises Charley Mann, Dodge distributor. The Dodge will climb the mountain roads without fear of trouble and the heavy luggage necessary for camping trips won't make any difference. Any Dodge car will stand the racket, but the open car of course is preferable, says Mann. As the manufactures declares: The materials which go to make up Dodge Bros. car insure the most miles of satisfactory strength and long service. For instance, the front axle is a chrome vanadium steep drop forging. Few cars at any price use this material in front axle construction." PIKE'S PEAK MOTOR IS IDEAL FOR GRADES If you are going on a mountain trip of course you want the 1923 Chandler with the Pike's Peak motor, says Sam Hubbell of Hubbell & Wimmer, Cleveland and Chandler distributors. The new Chandler is so full of good things mechanical that the manufacturers have gotten out a booklet, telling all about them. There's hardly an essential part in the entire machine that hasn't been improved. The basic design of this phenomenal motor was first tried out in July, 1917. The Chandler Motor Car Company, since then, has devoted every attention to research work in connection with manifold shapes, gas distribution, intake manifold temperatures, combustion chamber shapes, radiation and oiling, testing them in thousands of combinations under actual operating conditions; on hills, mountains, and at Pikes Peak, where the motor decisively earned its name. CARLOAD CHALMERS CARS COMING SOON A carload of Chalmers Six Sedan and touring cars will reach Turton & Lumdson, Maxwell and Chalmers distributors, next Tuesday, the firm announced today.
