DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS Attempt how monstrous! and how surely vain! With things of earthly sort, with aught but God; With aught but moral excellence, truth and love. To satisfy and fill the immortal soul! —Robert Pollok There should be no countenancing of anarchy in this country. Necessaries of life should be placed beyond the machinations of the speculator. The political thinking of the country should be kept clear of passion and prejudice. Simplicity is the hand maiden of greatness. The greatest are freest from ostentation. The deadly hazing has no proper place in any high school college or university in the land. Aerial flight around the world will be a great feat, and the honor should be achieved by Americans. Kidnapping of children should be punished with extreme severity. It is a hideously cowardly crime. Of what avail is it to feed the body and to starve the soul? Spiritual food is just as essential as regimen for the physical body. The California Legislature is remaining in PUBLIC'S BUSINESS REAL BUSINESS It has taken a certain type of public a long time to become impressed with that the public requires sound judgement and good business managerial affairs. Truth is, only recent years masses of the American people take independent thoughtful interest in government to stir them to demand officials sound, businesslike and of public affairs. The people must lead the way to government up to the highest state efficiency. For human nature is a dom will a man in public office be will forge ahead of what the people and work reforms in the interest of In other words, reforms in government follow public sentiment while demise. Intelligent public opinion should demand businesslike retrenchment in the public business. Public opinion be exerted strongly for the better public service. In this connection be said that the public, in inspiring service, should be as quick to prairie work of a public official, as the public is quick to condemn unsatisfactory vice. The faithful, competent public should have the stimulus of the presence, laudation and support. HENRY FORD'S SUFFIX IS REMARKABLE The rise of Henry Ford as a successful manufacturer is a phenomenal happening. His organizing talent, and his general trial co-ordination of factors to re-production and neutralize lost money paying tip-top wages, are amazing. Of what avail is it to feed the body and to starve the soul? Spiritual food is just as essential as regimen for the physical body. The California Legislature is remaining in session a long time. The taxpayers would not feel sorrowful were the session to end at once. Zeal to reform criminals is commendable. But equal zeal should be manifested in protecting the public against the depredations of criminals. California is developing as its ardent promoters would have it develop—along lines of permanence, with no fictitious booming. There is growth here, and it is sound, healthy growth. The airship is a permanence. Its development along commercial lines promises to be one of the phenomenal factors in the growth of the nation and expansion of its material interests. Much playing of politics may be expected from congress at the next session. The 1924 political contest will be fought strenuously by all the parties. The campaign may bring several surprises. There is a far better way to settle industrial troubles than by engaging in bitter, destructive warfare. Arbitration and conciliation afford a means of reaching just adjustments of disputes of this kind. The Panama Canal continues to vindicate the business judgment of those who built it. Volume of traffic through that great waterway is enormous and the canal is yielding more and more revenue each year. The two great army lieutenants who made the non-stop flight across the continent are landably modest about their achievement. They have won fame overnight. But they are not spoiled by the distinction they have gained. Trust to the determined American housewife to bring the sugar speculators to form. Once the volume of buying is cut down to the hurting point, the forces and elements which are responsible for the inflated prices of this dining table staple will be impelled to ease off in their greedy grip. Since the achievement of two American army HENRY FORD'S SUFFIX IS REMARKABLE The rise of Henry Ford as a successful manufacturer is a phenomenal happening. His organizing talent, and his general co-ordination of factors to production and neutralize lost money paying tip-top wages, are amazing. The Ford Motor Company, Inc. have more cash in its treasury than corporation, of any kind, in America has kept himself financially indifferent to the financial system which he usesiness. He has amassed a personal ranks among the greatest fortunes. His wealth is compared with that of fellow family, and there are those that Mr. Ford has gone beyond Mr. in the volume of his riches. The secret of Mr. Ford's phenomel lies not in the fact that he himself much, but that he has that faculty industrial generalship which enables men—to surround himself worthy talent. And he has a good is presented to him and is not availing even from the humblest men employ. IMMIGRATION FROM BERKELEY, (Calif.) GAZETTE For the first time since the end immigrant restriction law, after the British quota is being filled. For the ending June 30 there are 77,342 grants who are admissible. Already 600 of them have come, and the red passage. The steamship companyingly, have spread the news in that the lists are closed until June time there will doubtless be a bit more. This is one of the most interments of the present immigration situation stands, it is welcome. There is a crying need in this court workmen, and the British entrance admirably. Nearly all of them are custrialists. Most of them come cities of Scotland. Lately the im Glasgow alone have averaged 100 from Dundee, 200. There is also ling of Irishmen from Dublin. Thus Britain's loss is American men are driving here by hopelessness. Trust to the determined American housewife to bring the sugar speculators to terms. Once the volume of buying is cut down to the hurting point, the forces and elements which are responsible for the inflated prices of this dining table staple will be impelled to ease off in their greedy grip. Since the achievement of two American army lieutenants in making a non-stop flight across the continent, the proposed flight around the world by army aviators does not appear to be so formidable.' The first air journey around the world is a distinction worth the while of Americans to undertake. Sparks and Spikes It is easy to plow in a muddy soil but the seeds you will sow will rot. While facts cannot always be proven, truth is fully aware of their existence. The most renumerative asset is man's conscience yet he makes a liability of it. The bouquet from a flaterer is pregnant with deceit. Luck is not in the making, it is in the digging. You blunder wisely if you find the errors made come from the mind. FRIEDA'S FOLLIES Men are such subtle creatures. Particularly with their checks. Got one the other day. It was in payment for Frieda's Follies. Newspaper men are so inaccurate. They had left off the Frieda. On the face of the check. Bank clerks are so observant. This one had the dotted lines on the Folly. And the flirtatious look he gave me. When he handed me the money, pretty cheap for folly." One good thing about turning the other cheek is that you can do it without paying some lawyer a fee. If a man was good for anything at all in the old days, he was called a "Professor". Now he is called a wizard. About the only difference is that the old-fashioned peddler sold tinward and the new one rides in it. The old-time surgeon was a barber. But a side-line became unnecessary when adenoids were invented. In variably it is called a narrow and evil minded community by the man whose sins have found him out. Go slow about being a husband.
