MAY INDICT 20 IN
L. B. LIQUOR RING
(By International News Service)
LOS ANGELES, May 11.—Information which may lead to the indictment of 20 alleged members of the notorious Long Beach liquor ring was expected to be presented today when the federal grand jury went into session.
Sixteen of these persons, eight of whom were arrested when Long Beach police staged a raid on the Curtis Fish Cunning Corp., wharf, seizing a large quantity of liquor, five automobiles and a fashing boat, are now out on bail.
Among those against whom information is scheduled to be presented and an indictment probably asked in the future are:
Alexander B. Stewart, president of the Curtis Corp.; Albert C. Loahy and Victor C. Lord, two other officials of the Curtis Corp.; who were arrested in the Long Beach raid with Stewart; George O. Hagen, Jack Miller, reputed "king of American bootleggers," George Talbot, master of the ship Borealis, and his wife, Hazel Talbot, J. H. Keefe, Jerry King, J. W. Martin, Frank Agnew, Frank Kobola and T. Nagal.
Evidence in connection with the investigation of the Jack Pickford rum case, in which personal checks bearing the actor's name were alleged to have been found in possession of men charged with violation of the Volstead act, was also scheduled to be presented before the Inquisitorial body today.
Among the prized possessions of the Royal College of Physicians is the silver-mounted and polished horn of the cow, Blossom, from which Jenner, the discoverer of vaccination, obtained his first lymph.
WOMAN OF MYSTERY
(By International News Service)
NEW YORK, May 11—Myrtle B. Hayes, attractive middle-aged Boston real estate uromotor and formerly a Dallas, Texas, milliner, charged with having misused the name of Charles M. Schwab, the steel millionaire, in business deals, will be fore than over a woman of mystery today. She maintained her calm, smiling manner and indicated she was not at all alarmed over her predicament.
The woman who, it is alleged, naively told business men that Schwab was her friend and would back her for $1,000,000; out on $10,000 ball on a charge of forging Schwab's name to a $25,000 note.
Neither Mrs. Hayes nor Schwab broke their silence today.
T-2 WILL RETURN
EAST NEXT WEEK
SAN DIEGO, May 11.—The big army monoplane T-2 which last week flew from New York to San Diego without a stop, was being tuned up here today preparatory to flying next week to Washington, D. C., where Lieutenants MacReady and Kelly, her pilots, will receive decorations and other honors.
The T-2, came through the 2600 mile iron-stop flight in fine shape, showing almost no wear and tear, it was said.
Ordinarily the 400-horsepower Liberty motor is replaced with a new one after a long distance flight, but the one which drove the T-2 across the continent appears to be in such good condition that its replacement has not yet been decided upon.
The monoplane will be flown eastward by easy stages, stepping at various cities and flying fields.

PANAMA — NEW MARITIME NATION
"It is an ill wind that blows nobody good." At least the little Republic of Panama is not lamenting the failure of the United States Congress to pass the Ship Subsidy Bill, for she sees in that failure a chance for the further development of her own merchant marine.
Scarce a year ago Panama was unknown as a maritime nation—she had only a few tiny ships that traded up and down the coast. Today Panama has a fleet of thirteen ocean-going merchant vessels which aggregate 80,000 tons gross and ply the seas of the world.
This change in the maritime status of the little Central American Republic is attributed by U.S. shipowners to the handlecaps which American ships suffer in the way

of high operating costs and stringent navigation laws, making it difficult for them to compete against the more cheaply operated ships of foreign countries, and to the absence of oppressive provisions in the Panaman maritime code.
Certain owners of American ships have already shrewdly detected the possibility of putting their boats on a competing basis by registering them under the laws of friendly Panama, and now that Congress has declined to grant the subsidy, it is predicted that other American owners will follow the same course. Panama has announced through her Consulate at New York that she will do everything possible to encourage the enrollment of ships under her flag.
All of the boats which have thus far joined the Panaman fleet are freighters except the giant passenger liners Resolute and Reliance of the United American Lines. These luxurious steamers, which have been on cruises since their change of registry early this winter, will soon return to their regular service between New York and Europe, and will be the first ships in history to carry the Panama flag on trans-Atlantic highways.
Though now of Panama registry, the Resolute and Reliance are still owned and managed by Americans. The American Ship & Commerce Corporation, to whom they belong, is under the chairmanship of W. A. Harriman, son of the late railway king. Mr. Harriman is also chairman of the United American Lines. R. H. M. Robinson is president of both companies.
