SOME GOOD BOXERS
TURNED OUT HERE
By Sargum Sprout
All was quiet out to the Palace de Swat. The old mill stands out like a ghost, silent and foreboding. No wild shouting, no "booing" no razing Billy Darnley's judgment of a close bout disturbs the quietude of the old place. And the faithful band of fans surely miss the weekly fights.
Darnley had a hard proposition before him when he tried to make the fight game pay in Anaheim. It is no use hashing over the remains, what Billy Darnley might have done or what he should have done, but one thing Billy did do was to develop some very capable boxers out of very rough material.
Joe Chaney stands out a little above the others because he the oldest of the bunch to stick. Young Dudley graduated from Darnley's class and has more than made good up north. Young Burton is another graduate that has made good, and there are others that owe much of their success to their Anaheim training.
Back to Darnleys present string of boys. Little Toby Montoya is sure to make his mark if he keeps improving in the future as he has the past year. Johnny Nandes one of the best little boys showing out side Los Angeles was impossible one year ago. Young Terry owes much to Billies tutoring. Tommy Reddy was a frost when he hooked up with Billy a few months ago. And Tex Jones was the crudest bit of fighting material any one ever saw in action, yet old Tex is far from being a poor performer today.
A few weeks ago the two Jacks, Kearns and Dempsey, were quoted as being great admirers of Jess Willard that is they were quoted as having said that Jess was the best heavyweight of the day. That was before would-be experts had given their opinions that Big Jess had been able to work down into fighting trim and before Floyd Johnson had made his rather poor showing against F.
TWO U. S. GOLFERS BEHEADED TODAY
By ROBERT E. HARLOW
(I. N. S. Staff Correspondent)
DEAL, England, May 10—Two of the remaining Americans were beheaded in the fourth round of the British amateur golf championships today but when the bloodless operation was over the Yankees had the satisfaction of knowing that their best bets, Dr. O. F. Willing of Portland, Ore., and Francis Oulmet of Boston, still survived the same.
Oulmet's survival, however, had its tragic side for it involved the elimination of Jack Neville, the San Francisco gamester, in a match that carried through to the home hole.
The remaining American's head lopped off was the personal property of George V. Rotan of Houston, Texas, beaten by Lord Charles Hope, 3 up and 2 to play, and his defeat marked the finale of as brave a fight as an American has ever waged abroad.
Today's winners—Francis Oulmet, Boston, defeated Jack Neville, San Francisco 2 up. Lord Charles Hope, England, defeated Geo. V. Rotan, Houston, Tex., Dr. O. F. Willing, Portland, Ore., defeated R. W. Crummack, England. Roger Wethered, England, 4 and 5. Cyril Tolley, England, defeated Capt. G. N. C. Martin, England, 1 up. W. B. Terrence, England, defeated T. A. Torrance, England 4 and 2. Douglas Grant, Anglicized American, defeated H. D. Gliles, England.
Johnson boy to win easily.
The dear public is lead this way and that until it believes that the greatest fight ever staged is coming up. Jess Willard was once a good man and may be yet. Floyd Johnson has won over most of the would be heavys of the day but has not displayed any real class so far. Its a toss up as to who will win. As to Willards condition, we were told back kwhen Jim Jeffries came out of retirement that "It was astonishing to Jeff's most ardent friends what wonderful condition the Big Champ had worked himself into." If you believe We out in a few rounds did against Jack writer disagrees with because Willard is Jefferies, but because the ring will be more favorable auspices.

That was before would-be experts had given their opinions that Big Jess had been able to work down into fighting trim and before Floyd Johnson had made his rather poor showing against F. Fulton.
It appeared necessary that Willard stock had to be boosted in every way to make him a drawing card. Now that Willard seems to be working into fighting trim and Johnson's public set back has made the Kansas Giant a favorite something must be done to boost Johnson. The two Jacks accordingly have had a change of heart and are now betting on the

CAN WILLARD MAKE GOOD IN COMEBACK
By Davis J. Walsh
1. N. S. Sports Editor
NEW YORK, May 10—Close students of fistic form are asking the pertinent question whether Jes Willard can do on Saturday at the Milk Fund Show what Jim Jefferies failed to do nearly 12 years ago at Reno, to pull a middle-aged comeback.
Many are pleased to doubt it. They feel that his commendable outward appearance is comparable with an ermine clock that conceals dirty linen; that his apparent condition only serves to hide what they term the inevitable signs of inward decay.
They believe Willard will burn out in a few rounds just as Jefferies did against Jack Johnson. The writer disagrees with this theory, not because Willard is a better man than Jefferies, but because his return to the ring will be made under more favorable auspices.
In the first place, Jefferies was sent against one of the best heavyweights of all time, while in Floyd Johnson, Willard meets a mere second rater. In the second place, Willard's style is much more conservative than was Jefferies' and the question of collapsing from his own exertions is virtually no question at all.
MUCH INTEREST IN COUNTY Y. M. MEET
With the annual Orange county track and field day at Fullerton H. S. grounds Saturday at 1:00, the interest of the fifty odd clubs in the county is focused on the big event. The meet will be along the general plan of the pentathalon, with four classes and five events in each class. A boy may enter every event in his class, and ten boys may enter from each club. The scoring is arranged so that every boy competing has a chance to score for his club. The following are the events by classee:
Under 80 pounds—50 yard dash, high jump, running broad jump, baseball throw, 3-lap potato race; 110 pounds and under—75 yard dash, 5 lap potato race, high jump, borad jump, baseball throw; 125 lbs. and under—100 0yard dash, 220 yd. dash, high jump, running broad jump, 12 lb. shot put; Unlimited—100 yard dash 440 dash, high jump, running broad jump, 12 pound shot put.
The awards are arranged with the thought of not only the winners, but to develop club spirit. They are as follows:
To the Club making the highest number of points—the Garden Trophy; To the competing members of the winning club—Y. M. C. A. Medals; To the compelling members of the third high club—Y. M. C. A. Pins; to the high point winner in each class Y. M. C. A. fobs; To the high point winner in each event, 1-2-3-4 place—Ribbons; To the district having the most participants on the percentage of boys enrolled in clubs—Banner.
The plans for the big day include not only the track and field meet, but also a Swim and Supper. The arrangements for the meet are in the hands of A. J. Raitt, Secretary of the Fullerton District Y. M. C. A. All parents and friends are cordially invited to enjoy the afternoon with the boys.

Willard should win from Johnson. One reason is that Johnson seems to be made to measure for the ex-champion. He cannot hit hard enough to hurt a man of Willard's propositions and his usual rushing style must be discarded if he wishes to avoid being made a mark for Willard's counters.
