AGED WOMAN HURT IN MOTOR CRASH Mrs. E. J. Nacillin, 441 North Philadelphia-st, was painfully injured last night about 9 o'clock when the car in which she was riding was struck at Sycamore and No. Lemon-st by a car driven by Leon Martin of Anaheim. Mrs. Nacillin was with her son-in-law, Charles L. Trinler, who wrote to a complaint charging Martin with reckless driving. The car carrying the Nacillins was owned by W. A. Glover of 400 So. Rare-st., according to a report to police. Mrs. Nacillin was taken to the local sanitarium, where it was found she had suffered cuts about the face, and was severely shocked. The cuts are not serious, it is said. She is an elderly lady. The accident occurred when the Nacillins started to turn onto Lemon after striking the other car, the Martin car turned into the cure and was wrecked. Martin was released on bail of $100 to appear in Judge Brown's court tomorrow. STRIKERS TO WAR ON BOOTLEGGERS (By International News Service) SEATTLE, April 27.—War on bootleggers was declared today by the strike committee of I. W. W., handling the walkout of 10,000 lumber and marine workers in the Pacific northwest. Poddlers of moonshine work hand in glove with the "capitalists" in oppressing working men, according to the official order. A determined effort is being made to close up bootleg parlors on the local "skid road". Another good way to get a million dollars is to save ten dollars a month for 8,333 years. Homicides in U. S. Increase 28 Per Cent During 11 Years Death rate per 100,000 population by Murder, Manslaughter, Justifiable Homicide and Incendiarism Note rise in Homicide rate as Europe and U.S. go to war SOCIOLOGISTS have various explanations for the increase in homicides in the United States during the past twelve years. The Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company, in the above graph, represents only the facts. It is evident, the company points out, that the rise in the number of homicides coincides in several cases with certain social conditions but no predictions for 1923 are made on the strength of them. The graph shows, for instance, an increasing tendency to take human life during the period of general adversity that preceded the outbreak of the war in 1914. What we can't understand is why statesmen never seem so wise in congress as they seem on a chautauqua platform. COURTHOUSE The net estate of the ence E. Increase During 11 Years 1916 1917 1918 1919 1920 1921 The first year of the war was accompanied by a falling tendency. In 1916 a similar rise in the tide of murder to that which preceded the European conflict anticipated the war declaration of the United States. In 1918 there was a repetition of the drop. Why the score should rise in 1919, decline in 1920 and shoot far ahead of previous years in 1921 is hard to explain. Of course there were hard times. Prohibition had gone into effect, with its influence for better or worse on the general attitude toward law. The Phoenix does not presume to make dogmatic assertions concerning cause and effect.
