GIANT “CAKE-WALK” FEARED BY JULY 4 BY. DAVIS J. WAYSH I. N. S. Sports Editor NEW YORK, April 26.—The world’s champion Giants today open at the Polo Grounds, moving at a pace so consistently smart as to prompt base ball men to express the fear that they will be “cakewalking” by July 4 and hence make of joke of the race. That would be a bad thing for base ball, as even the Giants themselves must realize. However, the present standing of the clubs does not support the theory of an impending run away. The Giants have been fattening at the expense of the weak-knees Braves and Dodgers; yet the Cubs, showing a lot of early speed, are right up there with the champions and the Reds and Pirates have assumed contending positions, as expected. All of the western entries have been throat-cutting each other while the Giants were making merry in the east. Perhaps there will be less reason for forebodings when the schedule calls for the first of the intersectional meetings. The writer would be the last one to deny the class of the Giants, however, they are the best baseball club in baseball, on paper, and they seem to be proving it on the field. In fact, for the first time since McGraw assembled the present outfit they appear to be fool-proof. They were a bit shy of first class pitching in 1922, but to date, McQuillan and Scott have done so well that McGraw has been able to have Nehf, his star left hander, Lucas, Blume and Johnson, young pitchers, have also contributed to the success of the club with the expensive Bentley yet to come into his own. Between rounds with the Ilu I slipped off to Los Angeles to see the opening game of the Coast league. That very afternoon two dear visitors of the Eastern Star brought me a beautiful plant to cheer my weary days. On not finding me at home, ding bust it, they didn't sell the plant, pot and all, and I have never found out what they did with the money.
