20,000 PER MONTH STAR CAR OUTPUT
According to Appleby Motors Company the newest baby in the automotive field is breaking all records of the past for rapid growth.
Sales Manager Northland of the Appleby Motors Company is just in receipt of news from the Star factory, that there are over 50,000 Star automobiles running on the road today, and the present factory output is in excess of 20,000 Star cars per month.
"It is a peculiar thing", says Northland, but in California the greatest sales of Star cars, in proportion to the other registrations, are in mountainous districts. But this is as it should be, as the Star has proven itself to be one of the greatest hill climbers that the world has even seen. Reports from our owners bear out our statement that the Star will not heat, as nearly every day some owner comes in and reports of having taken a full load to Little Bear or Mount Baldy without having to use low gear, or without having to replonish the water supply. This is something that the average purchaser of a two thousand dollar car did not expect in the past.
"Sales in Orange County continue at the rate of better than one per day, and are only limited because of the fact that it is impossible to obtain a complete assortment of all models."
Cadillac Pictured At San Juan Mission
A striking contrast was presented recently when a Cadillac suburban was pictured in front of the Mission of San Juan Capistrano by Manager Otto Haan of the Cadillac Garage Co. The crumbling walls of the old building are shown as the background of the picture with the car in the foreground.
Says the Cadillac Craftsman "The chapel, which was the setting for the picture, will never be rebuilt. Here in 1812, during an earthquake, almost 50 people were killed by falling walls. Great stones placed unskillfully in the thick walls and arched roofs came crashing to earth, and nearly all of those worshipping in the edifice lost their lives.
"Citizens of the Southland, with a keen appreciation of the historic value of the ancient church, have raised a sum of money for the preservation of the structure. Operations were started this year to restore the old mission as it was originally.
"The lofty towers of the church will never be rebuilt, but the chapel will be restored as nearly as possible to its original state of perfection."
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Honts and daughter Pauline will go to San Bernardino tomorrow where they will be guests of relatives. Mrs. Brownlee, mother of Mrs. Houts has been ill in the hospital there but is getting along nicely.

Know Its Hidden Values
They Keep Essex Young
In Essex particular attention is bestowed on hidden values. They make the real difference in cars.
For weight carried the Essex frame is the sturdiest built, save one. Experts here and abroad call its motor the finest of its size.
It is because of its hidden values that Essex cars that have seen 50,000 and 60,000 miles are today as dependable as when new.

NEW PURCHASE PLAN OF FORD CO. TAKES
The nation wide announcement of the Ford Weekly Purchase Plan has been greeted enthusiastically everywhere, according to reports received by Ford dealers. It is being accepted as a new and forward-looking move in the marketing of automobiles, says George Dunton, Anaheim and Santa Ana Ford, Forsdon and Lincoln distributors.
That it will benefit millions of families and have a most salutary effect upon the auto buying public goes almost without saying, as it places something of a new light upon motor car ownership wherein the purchaser is able to avail himself of this modern necessity, Dunton says.
"For some time past Ford dealers have been selling care and trucks upon what is known as the deferred payment plan in which the purchaser makes a substantial initial payment, secures his car and completes the payment for it in regular installments," Dunton explained.
"This has been and will continue to be of immense benefit to numerous auto buyers whose means does not permit the full outlay for a car at the purchase time, but who can easily make the required regular payments."
"Now comes the Ford Weekly Purchase Plan which will make it possible for the additional millions to own and operate motor cars, as under the terms of the Plan as little as $5.00 will start anyone toward the ownership of a Ford car, Ford truck or Ford tractor. This initial payment, as well as all subsequent payments, will be deposited to the customer's credit in a local bank and draw interest at the regular savings rate.
"It extends to the whole family an opportunity to participate in the car purchase by permitting each member to contribute a small amount weekly to the Plan with the whole-come effect of incalculating thrift and also demonstrating the benefits to be received from regular and consistent accumulation of funds to spend for..."
FORD TRUCK or FORD TRACTOR. This initial payment, as well as all subsequent payments, will be deposited to the customer's credit in a local bank and draw interest at the regular savings rate.
"It extends to the whole family an opportunity to participate in the car purchase by permitting each member to contribute a small amount weekly to the Plan with the whole-come effect of incalculating thrift and also demonstrating the benefits to be received from regular and consistent accumulation of funds to spend for things desired.
"The price reduction of Ford cars and trucks which went into effect last October, bringing them to the lowest level in the history of the Ford company, opened a market of unusual proportions and with the inauguration of the Ford Weekly Purchase Plan this market now becomes even more comprehensive."
CAR'S SPRINGS ARE UNBREAKABLE CLAIM
To prove that the Overland car's springs can't be broken H. E. Hugh, new salesman of the J. E. Walter Co., which has added the Overland and Willis Knight to the Jordan on its showroom floor, is trying to arrange for tests similar to the ones he conducted while sales manager of the Pueblo, Colo., distributors. Hugh hurried the car over a five foot obstruction, and never broke a spring. The motor of this car is 28 H. P., and as good as there is built on small cars, says Hugh. The upholstery is sectional, so that any part can be replaced.
As for the Willis Knight, its motor never has been known to wear out, Hugh declares. The car, because of its motor, was finally adopted for the stage line which has replaced the steam railway between Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek. The motor is by far the most popular one in Europe and used on most of the leading makes of car.
BUICK NO. 1,024,461
Recently wide publication was given to the fact that the Buick Motor Co. had turned out its million car. This week Bill Goodrum of the Anaheim Auto Co., received a car with the engine number 1,024,461.
MAE MURRAY
Mae Murray has done the best work of her photoplay career in her latest Metro picture, "Jazzmania," presented by Robert Z. Leonard at California Theater starting tomorrow, where it will be seen for the first time. The amazing versatility of this gifted screen star was never more fully evidenced than in this film, and it is by all odds the most popular and entertaining of her pictures.
"Jazzmania" has everything in it. As a matter of fact, it is more than one photoplay. It has its background for the most part in the colorful kingdom of Jazzmania, a tiny Balkan principality. It shifts to Paris for a while; then to the Casino at Monte Carlo; and finally to New York. Spectacular scenes follow each other with incredible swiftness; and no sooner has one glimpse a scene of rare beauty than another is flashed on the screen in its stead. "Jazzmania" is really a New York Hippodrome of filmdom.
"FANCY PRICES"
NOT JUSTIFIED CLAIM
Scoring "fancy prices" for cars, and the inefficiency of many producing plants, A. R. Erskine, president of the Studebaker Corporation at South Bend, Ind., says:
"There are approximately one hundred plants producing automobiles in the country. They vary in efficiency from zero to one hundred per cent. Neither the product, the manufacturing facilities, nor the ability of the organization of any two of them are exactly alike. Consequently the costs of these one hundred plants vary according to their respective plant equipment, ability and output, but as each must make a profit over and above its cost of production, whether it be a low cost or a high cost, it follows that its prices are based upon its costs, and not upon the latinctive value of its product, as would be the case, if its product were a commodity, or a staple article, instead of a proprietary article.
Examination into the subject of quality discloses little that justifies the fancy prices asked for many automobiles. They all use grey iron castings, carbon steel, alloy steels, malleable castings, aluminum castings, and small quantities of bronze and brass. No car weighing say 3500 pounds contains more than $250 worth of these raw metals. Cord tires, leather, glass, wood, electrical apparatus, and general equipment used in fine cars are pretty much alike."
