OIL MEN CONFIDENT IN CYPRESS FIELD What seems to be the banner field so far as oil production is concerned, and one that some people believe will surpass even the Santa Fe Springs and Signal Hill districts will be located in the neighborhood of the Frederico Smith estate about three miles southeast of Artesia and west of the Hawaiian Gardens. This belief is strengthened by the fact that what oil men think is a natural gas blowout has been discovered in the midst of a large field on this estate. Interest is running high in that locality over the remarkable discovery first made by Roland H. Ingram who is resident of that locality. He was so enthusiastic over the formation that he interested three other oil men of Long Beach, E. L. Ford, from Kentucky, W. K. Wroe from Texas, and Murray Coursen, of Pennsylvania, and leased 91 acres surrounding the unusual natural formation. Mr. Ford has interested eastern capital and they expect to have an oil rig installed in the near future. Mr. Ingram is well known in Anheim, haying for two years been the owner and manager of the Pathe Music store and is a brother of G. T. Ingram, manager of the California theater. Mr. Ingram has shown the freak of nature to a number of oil experts who pronounce it one of the most remarkable and unusual natural conditions in this part of the state. Oil men presume that thousands of years ago, perhaps back in the time of King Tut the gas pressure became so intense that it caused the gas blowout, which left a large irregular shaped basin about three hundred and fifty feet in length and in some places over one hundred feet in width. This basin is surrounded on all sides by a high ridge with no outlet, thus precluding the possibility of the formation being caused by water. This basin is surrounded on all sides by a high ridge with no outlet, thus precluding the possibility of the formation being caused by water. This ridge which at its high point is one of the highest point in this part of the country, is about fifteen feet above the surface of the larger basin, and divides the latter from a smaller basin. The smaller basin also adjoins another small basin thus making the three basins without an outlet. The high ridge dividing the basins run in a northwesterly direction which oil men say is the direction which oil runs, as water usually runs in a southwesterly direction. Geologists and "doodle-bugs" this being the phrase for the men who determine the location of oil in instruments up on visiting the place, examine the gopher mounds in the basins where they find oil shale of different stratas. From the knolls surrounding the basins, one looks out upon sandy loam or alkali soil which seems to be the natural, soil of that part of the country. Another reason for oil men in this section is that structures are about two and a half miles apart and it is about that distance from this place to Signal Hill. The ranch upon which these basins are located is rather historic in that Fredrico Smith owned hundreds of acres of land in this territory forty or fifty years ago. He was known to many of the Spanish people and early settlers as "Sheep Smith, having herded sheep when this section was a prairie." Sheep Smith recently passed away at the age of 76 as nearly as he could approximate his age. OPPORTUNITY Have a very nice close in Bu... PHYSICIAN & SURGEON Phone: Residence 546 Office 569 DR. Center St. Phone 317 Anaheim, California NEW RY. MAY BRING MORE ICING CARS Whether the entrance of the Union Pacific into Anaheim will mean more refrigerator cars for local shipers of citrus fruit is the principal question that is interesting the latter inquiry today showed. The Pacific Fruit Express is owned jointly by the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific, and an equitable division of cars between the two might mean that more cars would be assigned to this city and others through which the road passes. Work on the Anaheim, Fullerton and La Habra stations of the road now is in progress, to be completed within 60 days in the case of the former towns and in 30 or 40 in that of LaHabra. The former will cost practically $25,000 each. Passenger trains will not be operated over the Union Pacific for the present. LITTLE BARABAR IMPROVES Word from the bedside of little Barbara Dunton, who underwent a mastoid operation at the local sanitaryarium reports improvement and all indications point to speedy and complete recovery.
