THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER An Independent Newspaper, Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday Paul V. Hester, Editor & Pub. Lotus H. Louden, Adv. Manager DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS There came a voice from heavenly heights: "Unclose thine eyes and see— Gifts to the last of those I love Thou givest unto me." —Rose Terry Cooke. The present age belongs to men and women of enlightenment, vision, courage and action. Legitimate oil stocks would be strengthened by driving the swindlers out of business. The public library is a mental filling station, maintained in easy accessibility to the people. As the child of today is trained and influenced, so will the future of the Nation and of humanity be. Some persons interpret liberty as being a blanket license for them to do as their more or less sweet will may dictate. Prosperity has come. And the economic experts say, in effect, that it has brought its knitting and will abide a long, long time. There is a dignity about being honest and honorable—a dignity that arises from and is attendant upon the practice of any virtue. They are preparing to start a new war in China. Better start some new railroads or new canals and dams to control destructive demoralizing. Prosperity gives indications of lingering indefinitely. No attempt will be made to arrest it for loitering. Let it stay and make itself at home. Even the clergymen are coming to the defense of the "flapper". But that independent young lady thinks that she is abundantly able to defend herself. Haven't noticed any news account of any girl starting an endurance test in washing dishes or down and overcome. CHINA IS BACKED WITH WAR PROSPECTS Another war in China impends. The political factions apparently are about to in sanguinary conflict. On the one side Pei-Fu, military sponsor of the Peking movement. On the other side is Sun Yat-Sen's tactical power of South China, Chang'an "war lord" of Manchuria. The content wives in the Yang-tse Valley, it is believed. To the Western world, these gory conflicts in China seem much out of place. But this because the world has come to expect from China, and yet takes war in Europe as a course. China has as much right to war as any other part of the world, it seems. It seems extremely regrettable, that the ancient land, so devoted to peace other countries, should engage in civil war. There are no issues involved there which not be wrought out by peaceful methods. Western world, however, has no growth being unduly critical toward China. For evidence has its shortcomings in the many unnecessary wars. PROSPERITY TO ENDUCH IS BELIEVED Prosperity is with the country in great experts agree. And they also agree that prospering probably will continue for an infinite period. There are some laws which be enacted, and some which should be revised or amended, to promote prosperity and to it abide. A great deal is accomplished through wise legislation, to make conditions prosocial. But the one factor which is counted up haps more than any other, to foster thriving psychologic state of the people. Woman's psychology is right; economic conditions are right. Send waves of confidence, goodwill and optimism sweeping across the countryside the tides of pessimism and despair are down and overcome. Prosperity gives indications of lingering indefinitely. No attempt will be made to arrest it for loitering. Let it stay and make itself at home. Even the clergymen are coming to the defense of the "flapper". But that independent young lady thinks that she is abundantly able to defend herself. Haven't noticed any news account of any girl starting an endurance test in washing dishes or cleaning house. That's quite different from dancing. California thrives. Its people are enterprising progressive, far-seeking. They are intent upon making this one of the greatest states in the Union, in economic importance. Europe finds money and energy to prepare for war. But some portions of that continent depend upon the United States to sustain their needy. There is no justification for this. Home-owning is becoming more common among Californians. This state, from present conditions, is destined to outrival any and all commonwealths in the number of owners of homes among its inhabitants. Homeownership is an anchoring, patriotism-inspiring influence. There are more than 95,000 illiterates in California—persons who can not write their own names in any language. This should not be. Every educational, patriotic and civic organization and influence in the state should be directed against this ignorance. American ambassadors, ministers and cansuils should be paid sufficient well to maintain them in comfort abroad, without having to draw upon their own private fortunes to meet their reasonable expenses. The diplomatic and consular service should be put under such adequate compensation as would enable men of moderate means to enter this highly important branch of national service. MARRIAGE SUCCESSFUL ARE NUMEROUS Let the truth be emphasized, over and again, that the institution of marriage iscess; that the great majority of marriages are not exploited as are the failures. Sensational exploiting of marriage so misleads many into thinking that the whitestation of marriage is a failure and that going to rack and ruin. This misconception should be removed. The disproportion ofriage failures to successes, made to appressional broadcasting of scandal creates mischevious impressions: This should counteracted in every way possible. Thecesses—the happy matrimonial unions—be stressed more and the failures should be distorted into greater significance that should bear. Even a fly-by-night shop mechanic can design a pump head that looks apparently O.K. but what about the heart of the pump? That's where it requires years of experience and the investment of great resources to perfect water-raising mechanism that will meet every requirement. Attempts have been made to imitate Layne & Bowler pump construction but the perfection these pumps have reached in design and quality has never been duplicated. Malcolm Fraser, manager of the citrus fruit exposition, maintains that the musical programs rendered at the fiesta should be of the classical order in keeping with Egyptian settings designed for the show, while Herman Stern, director general of the affair (claims that no modern entertainment can be a success without jazz—and there you have it). As a result of the debate, which by the way is of a friendly nature, Anaheim is in the throes of a musical war, with no armistice in sight. Manager Fraser is in favor of engaging a band of musicians made up of members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra and like organizations. On the other hand, Director Stern advocates the hiring of well known jazzologists such as Grauman's Metropolitan orchestra, while various members on the musical committee of the show are choosing sides in the word war. One of the musical committee favors jazz and he backs up his statement to the effect that this class of music does not clash with the accepted decorative scheme, by quoting the title of a popular song number now in cogue, "Chopatra Had a Jazz Band in Her Castle on the River Nile." Another committeeman asserts that jazz and Egyptian art do not mis any more than do oil and water. And so it goes. In the meantime plans for the big exposition other than those pertaining to the musical program are progressing nicely. Display space, both in fruit and industrial sections will soon be at a premium, according to Manager Fraser and the auto- Another aid to longevity is to be some hopeful young man's rich uncle. If you do it for nothing, that's matrimony. Taxpayers will be glad to learn that modernizing a battleship doesn't cost any more than building a new one. It is a little more difficult for the young man to get ahead in business, but there still are villages that have no cash registers. The only thing about the movie hero that we envy is his ability to keep a shirt clean through all adversity. The growth of cynicism may be due to the fact that "Follies" never are as paucity as they're advertised to be. That distinguished statesman who said the tariff is a local issue might have said the same of Prohibition. A normal wife is one who is surprised when she observes how charmingly polite her husband can be to other women. Trusting in Providence is commendable, but that isn't all that is required of those who sit behind steering wheels.
