3000 UNEMPLOYED CONTROL MULHEIM (By International News Service) AMSTERDAM, April 20.—Mulheim, the German city seized by a mob of 3,000 unemployed workers, passed through a night of terror with outbreaks of shooting in the streets, according to word received here. The total casualties were put at five dead, two fatally hurt and 50 wounded. Communists occupied the center of the town. Rioters looted gun shops and opened fire upon the city hall where several hundred police were besieged. Leaders of the communists threatened to run up the red flag over city hall if it was taken. A state of seige exists at Mulheim. Large numbers of German strikers flocked into the city during the night and joined the "rebels". Destruction to property at Mulheim was tremendous. Barricades were built in the streets and the houses were riddled with bullets. The security police (German) who took refuge in the city hall returned the fire of the attackers. Other policemen attempted to restore order, but the odds were against them in numbers. The communists are reported to have raided numerous food stores and seized motor cars. The trouble has spread beyond Mulheim, but the German police are co-operating with the French in an effort to restore order. Many rioters were arrested. As the ringleaders were taken at Mulheim th rank and file began to retire. Latest advices from Essen indicate that the authorities are getting the situation in hand.
