SUGAR SUIT MOST IMPORTANT ACTION (By George R. Holmes) I. N. S. Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, April 20.—Federal action started in New York to stop gambling in sugar and bring prices down to a reasonable level was described today by administration officials as one of the most important pieces of litigation ever undertaken by the federal government. The government's blow at the sugar speculators is a more vital and far-reaching aim than the mere recovery of a few cents a pound on sugar, important as they may be. What the government is really aiming at is establishment of the principle that it has the right to step in and exercise partial regulatory control of the necessities of life whenever it considers the situation warrants. It successful in the injunction proceedings against the sugar exchanges of New York to prohibit trading in futures, the third and perhaps conclusive step in the accomplishment of this aim will have been taken, according to officials. The theory behind the government's campaign of action is based upon a conception of modern day industrial life as embracing three absolute necessities—food, fuel and transportation. Anything that interrupts public service and fair and adequate distribution of any of these three constitutes a public menace, wherein the government must act, according to officials. In the Wilson administration Attorney General Palmer used the injunction method against the coal operators and miners; last summer Attorney General Daugherty used the injunction against the striking railway shopmen in the transportation crisis; and now the government has taken the third step by again bringing the injunction into play in the FINDING OF CHILD RESTORES HARMONY (By International News Service) NEWBURG, N. C., April 20.—A separation suit in the supreme court was expected today to be halted and domestic felicity restored between Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Van Tassel as the result of a telegram which brot to an end a four year country wide search for the 8 year old daughter of the couple. Four years ago, the child, Clara, was kidnapped by Jacob and Minnie Wilson, mother-in-law and sister of Mrs. Van Tassel. Search for the girl was futile. Meanwhile, domestic troubles between Mr. and Mrs. Van Tassel had reached such a stage that action for a separation was instituted. Yesterday a brief telegram was received by Mrs. Van Tassel from the sheriff of Glendale, California, stating that little Clara had been found and that the Wilsons had been arrested. The Van Tassels are overjoyed at the news and it is believed the child will lead them back to harmony. HANG 2 AT BUTTE (By International News Service) BUTTE, Mont., April 20.—William Harris and Monte Harris, related only in eime, were hanged on the gallows in the county jail early today for the murder of Cyril Schilling, a roadhouse proprietor, on Thanksgiving night, 1921. The men went to their deaths calmly and both were pronounced dead shortly after 3 a.m. Two other men—Earl McCoy and George Beach, are serving life terms for participation in the killing of Schilling. The four were on parole from the Montana state prison when the crime was committed. Sugar situation, thus completing the cycle of action affecting food, fuel and transportation. Wahlberg Unless proper grinding methods are carried out this season on many of our deciduous fruits, we may expect to find a large quantity of small sized number two fruit at harvest time. Apricots especially have set very heavily this spring and will require considerable thinning out to insure good normal sized fruit, acceptable to the market, through the canners and dried fruit or fresh fruit buyers. Ordinarily apricots should be thinned so that no two specimens will touch when ripe. The young fruits should not be left closer than from three to four inches on strong buds and shoot and only one fruit to each short spur. Two fruits may be left near together on opposite sides of the branch if no other fruits are closer than four or five inches. In Orange-co where Brown Rot is more or less prevalent, care should be taken to see that fruits do not touch when ripening. There is often enough moisture between fruits that touch each other to germinate spores of Brown Rot. This disease spreads very quickly from fruit to fruit at ripening time. The thinning may be done in two ways—first, by hand; second, by poling. Under average conditions in the commercial orchard, the use of a light pole, bamboo preferably, will be found quite efficient in removing some of the superfluous fruit by light knocking. The branches may be struck with a light bamboo pole at the thinning period without injury to either branches or buds. It is not possible to say how much fruit should be removed. This depends largely upon the amount of fruit that has set. On trees recently thinned by the Farm Advisor as much as two-thirds of the fruit was removed, leaving one-third on the tree, which was ample to mature a maximum amount of fruit which a tree could bear and insure good size. Thinning of peaches is more universally practiced by growers this year. The canners are going to be more particular in the size and quality of fruit accented as the area. DUSCUSS WEED PEST Wild morning glory has been the concern of a host of farmers in Orange-co. Owing to its persistent growth many have considered it impossible to control, but systematic control measures have conquered in the end. The repeated outlining of the plant below the surface during the growing season, will kill the wild morning glory in one year, says Clyde C. Barnum, author of Circular 256 on the Control of Wild Morning Glory just issued by the University of California Agricultural Experiment Station. The implementation used for cutting the plant is a weed knife with horizontal blades. The interval between cuttings should not be greater than five days if possible, the aim being to prevent green leaves from ever appearing. Morning glory is the most serious weed pest in California today and is found in areas sufficient to be of economic importance in thirty counties of the state. Its widespread distribution, following the path of extensive agricultural development in the richest soils of the state, indicates plainly the serious menace of the weed to agriculture. Circular No. 256 describes the wild morning glory plant and discusses the physiology of the plant in relation to control. Some of the topics treated are cutting as a means of control, alfalfa as a mother crop, smothering with non-living material, pasturing with hogs and sheep, the salt brine method of control, and commercial weed killers. The persistent growth of the morning glory plant after repeated entitling is due to the large amount of plant food stored in the roots. This food must be exhausted in order to kill the plant. Copy of this circular may be secured at Farm Advisor's office, Santa Ana. COURTHOUSE NEWS An informational bulletined today by District Attorney K. P. Thinning of peaches is more universally practiced by growers this year. The canners are going to be more particular in the size and quality of fruit accepted, as the crop promises to be very heavy. Peaches should be thinned to at least four to six inches apart. It is generally impractical in most cases to attempt to separate doubles. Removed all such if there are enough singles to make a crop. The Agricultural Extension Service, co-operating with the Farm Eureau, has scheduled an apricot thinning demonstration at El Toro.
