PLANE CARRIES FOOD TO STARVING PARTY (By International News Service) BAY CITY, Mich., April 19.—Lieutenant E. C. Whitehead, en route from Selfridge Field to Northport, Michigan, in an airplane, where he will pick up food for the starving party of nine men and a woman isolated on South Fox Island, near there, landed on the outskirts of this city at noon to replenish his gasoline supply. He will hop off early this afternoon. SELFRIDGE FIELD, Mount Clemens, Mich., April 19.—First Lieutenant Ennis C. Whitehead left here at 9:25 am today in a Curtis airplane to fly 225 miles to South Fox Island, in ice-bound Lake Michigan, to take food to nine starving men and a woman. He estimates his flying time will be three hours. Lieutenant Whitehead's plane is to stop at Northport, Mich., 25 miles from Traverse City, fill his rear cockpit with food and other necessary supplies and then fly over Lake Michigan 18 miles to the island. He will have to land at Bay City to take on gasoline. NORTH PORT, Mich., April 19.—An airplane form Selfridge field, Michigan, is expected to wing its way toward this city today, bent on an errand of Mercy. It will strive to reach Fox Island, 20 miles offshore, where nine men and a woman are said to be slowly starving. These men and their nine companions went to the island last November to cut timber for some Northport crate manufacturers. They carried provisions for several months anticipating the ice flock would break up long before they did. Three weeks ago they made their first attempt to reach the mainland. In the second attempt they were caught in a blizzard and wandered on the lake more than a day before they were able to get back to the island. Last Monday the trio started in a skiff and on the third day were blown nearer short. They were picked up by a motorist and brought here, where they were given medical OSKS DAMAGES IN BANK STOCK SALE Damages of $2,250 with interest at seven per cent from Dec. 21 last, exemplary damages of $5,000 and costs are asked in a suit filed today by T. O. Luckett against J. Stewart Ross, J. K. Hermon and O. G. Horn. All three were of El Centro, and the suit arose through alleged misrepresentation in the sale by the plaintiff of 60 shares of stock of the Security Commercial & Savings Bank of the Imperial co. This stock subsequently says the complaint was sold to the Pacific Southwest & Savings Bank of Los Angeles. Hermon is now cashier of the Santa Ana branch of the Los Angeles bank, formerly the California National Bank. Luckett alleges that between 1914 and 1916 he purchased the stock which, on Dec. 21 last, he agreed to sell at $150 per share or $9,000. The defendants, he alleges, told him that the market price of the stock was $145, but that they were willing to pay $150, because of the alleged additional representative value of the stock. He told them, he says in the complaint, that he did not know the real value of the stock and would depend upon their sincerity. But previous to his agreement with them, he avers, they had already arranged with the Pacific Southwest & Savings to sell the stock at $187.50 or a total of $11,250, a difference or $2,250, on the 60 shares. Not until March 15 last did he know of this, he alleges. S. field next Sunday, Manager Pete Hax announced today. Irvine will present a stronger lineup than the one Anaheim defeated several weeks ago. Rogers will play short and Hendrickson, brother of the Chicago White Sox star pitcher, will be on the mound. Anaheim Elks will revamp the lineup, also, Ramage going back to first; Glenn Callan on second; Pendleton at short and Doty Bush trying out the third base corner. Arch Hawkins, Coffman and Schrott will be in the field. Salveson will probably start in the box as Howling Harry Hughes arm continues sore. Of course, Captain Buster Callan will receive. A week from Sunday the Elks will try to show the Riverside Colored Giants they had no license to vanquish the home folks last Sunday.
