COAST STARS GET
N.Y. INTRODUCTION
NEW YORK, April 14.—Willie Kammi and Jimmy O'Connell, representing an outlay, of $200,000, are scheduled to receive an informal introduction before a major league crowd at the Polo Grounds this afternoon.
It will be the first appearance of these costly young men on a big time diamond and the Glants and White Sox planned to make something of an occasion of it, but the weather is by no means kindly. It is cold enough for stomachaches and as dark as the inside of an old boot.
Given a genial day, a crowd in excess of twenty thousand probably would have turned out, Bentley, who cost a mere $60,000, is of casual interest only.
Despite the cold, a thousand or so, right off Broadway will sit in for the game, if it is played, the magnet being the appearance of Kamm and O'Connell.
From all accounts, Kamm is by long odds the better player, for the present at least. Indeed, it is now claimed by some critics of baseball form that O'Connel may need a full season on the bench before he is ready for John McGraw's lineup. He is a bit crude in the outfield and more or less ill at ease in facing left hand pitchers.
James is a ball player, right enough, but still has much to learn, it seems, he has, however, improved his fielding with commendable steadiness since first reporting to McGraw at San Antonio and finally has begun to hit. He made six hits in the last three games, one of them a double that drove in two runs.
James, no doubt, will do in the long run.
There seems to be no occasion to qualify statements in behalf of said Kamm, either. He leads the White Sox in hitting during the series with an average of .450 and daily makes plays around third base that are said to be a thing of beauty and joy forever.
He is particularly gifted, they say, in the matter of amothering balls over the bag and a splendid arm is supplemented by an ability to get the ball away with blinding rapidity.
The Sox have made double plays by the wholesale during the southern tour and Kamm has figured in most of them. As a matter of fact.
LOCALS LOSE 10-6
TO GARDEN GROVE
Coach Kay Elliott's diamond men lost 10 to 6 last evening at Garden Grove in a league game. The local boys were up in the air waiting for Garden Grove to come and play on the local diamond. Coach Elliott phoned Garden Grove and was told the game was scheduled there. The boys hurried to the Grove school.
Mann, on the mound, was not at his best and allowed five walks. Too many men got hits. Carroll replaced Mann in the third inning but the score was already one-sided. At the end of the fifth, Garden Grove had made 10 runs, against two for the local boys. The latter played better ball in the last of the game and didn't allow the small town boys a single run. Anaheim scored four.
Anaheim was not up to par owing to lack of practice. Coach Elliott plans to send his men thru hard practice for the game with Huntington Beach next Friday.
