DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS
And when the summons soundeth clear
Let us rebuke our lagging souls, and say,
and low
It is—oh, wondrous thought! it is the Lord.
Who designs to claim thy help and service no!
Be quickly, my soul, nor mar thy high estate;
Thy Lord and Master calls! let Him not wait. Susan Coollidge
Habits bind chains about one which, in time, are very hard to break.
A sterner, surer enforcement of law would be as a breakwater to waves of crime.
The plodder may become a genius—not because of his plodding, but in spite of it.
On the stage and screen, as in real life, it is but a step from tragedy to comedy, or vice versa.
The people should show their appreciation of good services from those who hold public office.
Business and industry are revived, and genuineness and permanency are written all over the revival.
Now that they are planning fouse the radio in politics, it should be but one more step to wireless politics.
Uncle Sam should woo Latin America with the ardency and persistency which usually mark the Latin wooper.
There is a lull in the sword brandishing in the Near East. They can make peace with Europe if they really desire it.
The man who is solvent in honesty never becomes wholly insolvent. Solvency is a matter of principle, as well as of money.
ADOPT FORESTRY PLANS FOR NATION
That the United States should have a definite policy for protecting its forests against fire and to stimulate replanting of forest areas, lion has been the conviction of experts in forestry. Congress, however, without the spur of quickened public sentiment has drifted along, with no settled policy.
A committee of the United States Senate headed by Senator McNary has made an extensive study of pine forests in the South. Members of this committee found that the pine forests of Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida are diminishing. They found no systematic replanting of denuded forest lands. And they were convinced that the pine forests of the South would disappear altogether, in the near future if reforestation is not undertaken systematically.
There should be a reforestrating policy national in scope—and a policy which would be protective against destruction and fire. Every year that this imperative need is neglected brings the nation nearer to a situation that may become clamitous ultimately. The material welfare of the country is bound up very largely in the forests. Congress should act swiftly, sweepingly and constructively.
SECTIONAL THREATS IN BAD FORM
More or less bitterness in connection with consideration of reaportionment by the Legislature at Sacramento seems inescapable. It is to be hoped that the better judgment of the legislators will overcome any inclination to indulge in sectional filing and threats of retaliation.
California should not be racked by sectional wrangles. There recurs, at intervals, inflammatory sectional talk in advocacy of state division. This is a logical result of extreme and selfish grasping for advantage by certain sections of the state. But even though the provocation to hurt threats of this kind may great, there should be no state-division move.
Uncle Sam should woo Latin America with the ardency and persistency which usually mark the Latin wooper.
There is a full in the sword brandishing in the Near East. They can make peace with Europe if they really desire it.
The man who is solvent in honesty never becomes wholly insolvent. Solvency is a matter of principle, as well as of money.
Observance of Easter in California is made the more impressive because there is such an abundance of flowers of this season.
It is a nerve ricked old world, needing a long period of assured peace and surcase from militarism and the menace of warfare.
The dairy industry in California is growing to prodigious proportions. There is a ready and profitable market for all dairy products.
There should be a perpetual entente cordial between the United States and the republics of Latin America. Their destinies should dovetail.
It is from the Sarah Bernhardt that the elevating of the stage must come the genius, who glorify the histrionic art by their exalted talents.
The farmers sowed their "blue" influence in Congress and now they are reaping a fine crop of credits bestowed upon them by recent farm-credit legislature.
They are proposing to put the radio into politics. But the Listenin family may raise serious objections to this. And there millions of members of the family.
Travel pictures are intensely interesting and very informative. If one cannot travel much, one can enjoy what the camera reveals of the places and peoples of interest.
The glory of Sarah Bernhardt's genius was undimmed to the last. If she did not die in liness, as she had eagerly hoped, she did die with her brilliant faculties unclouded.

This is a logical result of extreme and selfish grasping for advantage by certain sections of the state. But even though the provocation to hurt threats of this kind may great, there should be no state-division movement. California is great as it is, and great should remain. Instead of directing energy toward separating the state, efforts should be made to bring the sections into closer accord and to promote healthy co-operation.
ONION YIELD LESSENS THIS YEAR
If you have tears to shed, prepare to shave "Oh, Dry Those Tears!" For the California crop of tear producers is on the wane this year. Its yield of Texas Bermuda and Creole onion will be below normal. Such is the report which comes from the Department of Agriculture, Washington. California's production is forecast at 413,700 bushels. Texas will have a crop of 2,264,300 bushels, it is estimated. So the sow need not be without its pungency, nor the livestock go without its onion smothering.
Say what one will about the onion—plebite as may be the onion breath, yet this vegetable has health and nutrition bound up in its skin. Many a robust person owes much of his or her robustness to liberal partakings of onion in the diet.
The next few months will demonstrate what ther or not Woodrow Wilson is to re-assume leadership of the Democratic party—in some measure at least. Mr. Wilson's interposition in the Colorado Senateorship situation, and his activities in other directions indicate that he inspires to renew his masterly hold upon his leadership of his party. His efforts in this direction will be followed with the keenest interest all over the land.
Sarah Bernhardt was the darling of The Fate for a long period. She died practicallyomeness, it is true, but with her faculties keen and unimpaired and with the plaudits of million ringing in her ears.

Uncle Joe Cannon's departure from Washington, following hard on Bourke Cockran's death and John Sharp Williams' retirement, is certain to set the heads of old-timers wagging over the Capitol's loss of individuality. Where can be found another old-school Southerner like Williams, a patrician in manner while a Democrat in principle, half lawyer, half planter, and all scholar. Where is another Irish orator, so gifted in wit, eloquence and histrionic ability, to replace Cockran for Tammany. Where can the Western prairies find a full flavored exponent like Uncle Joe, profane, shrewd, witty, and lovable. Well, questions of this sort have probably been asked every few years for the last innitable Langdon Cheves, long the typical South Carolinian in Congress, died in 1823. Look back through the pages of Blains, Benton, Col. W. Forney, and historians of Congress, and you will find that one set of picturesque figures, redolent national peculiarities, springs up as another disappears. It has happened in the past that happen in the future.
In three years, 1850-52, Americans saw it congressional giants of the time—Clay and Calhoun—pass together from the tomb, they rightly said that it many decades before the Republic tree such stars in on constellation not yet been equalled. But the real men of lesser distinction though individuality such as Congress has just applaud a different matter. Kansas still is the potentialities of producing another Jerry Thompson, so lightening quick in debates and so radical an agrarian in views; or better, still, either Ingalls. We shall still have opportunity of contrasting the polished Massachusetts like Everett, Hoxk, McCall or Lodge, with highly humorous statesmen of the Southwest, Otto Buck Kilgore of Texas, or expansive Manus like Vest, or sons of the Northwest Mor Knott. The tidewater country of Maryland will still send Congress acquired a passion for learning durations in ancestral libraries. Mary McLeod selected one in the person of Willis Brue, writing upon the monarch life in "The American Complainned that Americans of all ages one type. But sectional deep after all, and one fact is the marked differential types.
