RACE PROMISED IN AMERICAN LEAGUE BY DAVIS J. WALSH I. N. S. Sports Editor NEW YORK, Mar. 31.—For the first time in years, the American League race promises something more than a two-team go-as-you-please. The Yanks, champions for two years, figure to repeat but the off-season improvement in the Tigers, White Sox and Athletics should make the affair an open one. In the training camp, the Yanks are probably the worst looking ball club in the league at the moment. However, the season runs through 164 games and Hoyt, Bush, Shawkey, Mays, Jones and Pennock is certain to carry the club near the top. The Yankees figure to get even better pitching than they did last year because Mays and Hoyt are due for a comeback. Both are comparatively young. Bush is not due to repeat the amazing results he obtained in 1922. But Pennock will more than balance the difference if Huggins pleks the spots for his left handed ways. Ruth, now an earnest, sombre individual, probably never will attain the heights that were once his but will be in there playing baseball and not the sure thing in the second race at Belmont Park. Otherwise, the Yanks are much the same ball club, except that Bob Meusel seems to have realized that business is business. The Tigers will muster a team batting well above .325 and with improved pitching, are believed to be the logical contender. Give Cobb the working margin of a couple of consistent pitcher and it is more than likely that he would rush through like a prairie storm. He has everything else. So have the White Sox, thanks to Willie Kamm. It would not surprise the writer if the White Sox ran one-two. All Gleason needs is another winning pitcher with Faber, Leverette and Here’s Our Entry Auto Race Anaboim came rattling into the Auto Resume with an entry from the George Dunton Ford and the Mother Colony. The Browns, who finished a scant game outside the pennant last year haven't improved in any way. In fact they have retrograded. The Indians improved but will do well to finish in the first division with the obvious improvement in the Athletics. The latter are figured to come up for air for the first time since 1914. Neither Senators nor Red Sox are dangerous. A. H. S. GIRLS TAKE BASKETBALL TITLE Two girls' basketball teams playing at Aunheim H. S. court last evening fought to a desperate finish. Anaheim proved superior and won a 23 to 12 decision over Coronado Hi school, champs of San Diego-co league. The game, fastest ever to be played on the local court, was not taken by a walkaway! The action was in the center and the centers, Ella Cook and Frances Adams, kept up the untiring work until the final whistle. Helen Day started the game by making the first goal. The third ended with Anaheim in the lead 8 to 6. The second period started off slow Coach Jacques' athletes fumbled the ball, were too heavy on their feet and did not get into the hang of the game for several minutes. Anaheim was able to score several points thru fouls. Anaheim scored 5 this section and Coronado none. The last and deciding third started with a burst of speed. Coronado girls made some wonderful tries for goals but they never materialized. They rushed the throws considerably and as the ball bounded off the loop it was grabbed by local guards. The local klan played the third thrue and scored 10 points, making their total 23. Coronado annexed 6 digits, making their total 12. Thru last night's efforts, Anaheim Hi school won the Southern Calif. basket ball championship. Anaheim will now be ready to take on any team in the central part of California and then the northern to claim the state title. Coach Jacques' should be extended considerable credit for leading her girls thru such a successful season. In the second third, Irma Young suffered a bad crack on the elbow. BILL'S CAFE TAKES ODD FROM WHITTIER Bill's Cafe won the odd game from Dugas No. 2 team from Whittier altho no broke any records. Hensen being the high man with 553.
