HEAVY CROPS IN CHINA FAMINE AREA
PEKIN, March, 26—Hard work, rains and bumper crops, have put 65,000,000 Chinese three years nearer the time when they can resume the purchase of American kerosene, cotton prints, candles, tobacco and tinplate.
These people are those who survived the famine of 1920-21 and who were so hard hit, according to economists engaged in famine relief work, that they would be unable to buy these things for seven years.
The survey was made by Americans and in special reference to American goods.
While here and there the Chinese outside the cities use many American products, those enumerated constitute the bulk of the purchases in the districts hit by the famine.
The crop this year however was surprising in most of the famine area and it is generally considered that an advance of three years has been made.
The very severity of the famine will make a greater American market for the Chinese sold things they must replace by buying from the foreigner.
