DAILY GREETINGS TO
OUR READERS
Through this visible and sometimes darkened life, it was intended that the brightness of the soul should shine; and that it should shine through all its surrounding cares and labor—Orville Dewey.
Relations among the republics of this Western Hemisphere should be an example for the world, in peacefulness and amity.
Any industry or occupation which contributes in measurably to the health or well-being of the race should not be despised.
Engineering skill, backed by sound business management of funds, should be to the forefront in highway construction of this state.
This is "a grand and awful time." The world is witnessing events and proceedings and policies such as it never before witnessed or experienced. The currents of history are running in turbulent rapids.
In constructing highways in California, quality, rather than mileage, should be the chief consideration. Roads should be built to endure and to bear the strain of heavy, almost incessant traffic.
The example of the United States and the other republics of this hemisphere living side by side without being contentious and hostile, should, in time shame the rest of the world into adopting a similar pacific attitude.
California has about the most liveable volcano in the world today—Mt. Lassen. This flame-throated mountain catches the spirit of the state and aims to excel—to be livelier than
COMMERICAL SERVICE IN AIR PLANNED
Commercial aerial transportation in the United States is to receive developmental attention at once. A big corporation has been formed in which captains of business and industry are interested, to promote the establishment and maintenance of a network of commercial air routes along the waterways and coasts of the United States.
Development of this nature is highly important as a condition precedent to make the aeronautic strength of the country effective in war. A great peace service, in commercial aerial transportation, would keep a large reserve force of men in training for military service, should this country become engaged in hostilities.
Great Britain, France and Italy are evolving mammoth systems of commercial airways. The British government is proposing a subsidy of $5,000,000 to stimulate and create commercial aviation companies throughout the empire. France and Italy also are encouraging development of aerial trade routes. The United States should not lag behind in this.
GHASTLINESS OF WAR IS SHOWN BY FIGURES
The ghastliness of warfare is shockingly impressed by official figures showing the casualties suffered by Great Britain in the world struggle. Britain's casualties, as officially reported by Chancellor of the Excheuer Baldwin, numbered 946,023 men killed and 2,121,270 wounded, out of a total of 9,496,370 enrolled in all branches of the military and naval service. Total expenditures of the British government during the war period were more than $45.,000,000.
Such is the horror of modern warfare! It depletes a nation of the flower of its young manhood. It leaves countless homes in mourning. It impoverishes national treasures.

Every driver of an automobile should be careful in driving. Every pedestrian, in crossing streets, should be careful. Carefulness should be the Alpha and Omega—"The beginning and the end"—with all who traverse streets and highways.
American Indians own about 7,000,000 acres of forest lands. This today, sees an immense area... But a few centuries ago the Indians were in undisputed possession of tens of millions of acres of unbroken forests in this land. Before the advance of the white man and his civilization, however, the grackless forests have been down and only pitiful remnants remain.

They are going to widen Palm-st. and pave it and make it a real entrance to a real city for motorists. We'd like to open a book on this event. Here are the odds:
2 to 1 rival billboard agents will get in a fight over sites on the new road before a week is up.
5 to 1 there will be four ditches to the block in the paving before six months is up.
20 to 1 a street car company will insist on tearing up the pavement and installing tracks before a year is up.

EGYPTIAN
Egyptian style craze will be a flash in the pan, of short duration. Women quickly will become 'fed up' on King Tut fashions and novelties. This is the opinion of Richard P. Bach, expert on industrial art. Other experts disagree with him. They predict a long run of popularity for Egyptian styles. If Bach is right, somebody will lose a lot of money now being staked on the belief that Americans will go Egypt-crazy.
The most fickle thing in life is fashion. The industries based on styles are highly hazardous. To succeed in them requires an exceptional type of genius. The style makers are playing for big stakes in gambling on King Tut's influence in 1923 and later.
