CYLINDER REPAIR COSTS CUT IN TWO Most of the garages in the city had representatives present at C. J. Nehno's accessories shop on Wednesday of this week when a new method of finishing cylinders at half the cost in time and money of the old way was demonstrated. By this method an old cylinder can be put into even butter condition than a new one, because the latter always is left, like the piston, with a roughness which can only be reduced by slow driving for say 500 miles. "Cylinder walls becoming out of round, tapered and worn oversize at the ring travel from constant use," as one expert put it, "usually for an operation of reaming or reboarding to fit the new pistons, when more than .005 of an inch of metal is to be removed." Hitherto it has been practically impossible to do this work with the same exactitude as at the factory. With the new tool, the Red Devil cylinder burnishing machine, the taper or out of round up to .005 of an inch may be removed without taking the motor off the chassis and perfectly smooth surfaces left. The secret of the new machine is the cutting compound devised. The tool itself is made to fit. Cylinder walls of from 3 1/4 to 4 1/8 inches thick and is driven by a one-half inch portable electric drill. There are six cutting blades with two points of contact to each individual blade, the third point being provided by the cylinder. The arrangement is such that the high and tight spots of the cylinder first are struck. Worn out blades are replaced at comparatively small cost. A philosopher is one who finds comfort in the reflection that every tense situation eventually becomes past tense. Plain Dealer Want Ads Get Results Insurance Service Garden Truck Buyers, Don't Block Highway At this time of the year the way-side shrines sacred to "King Vegetable" are attracting hundreds of devotees every day. Small mobs of motorists are gathering each hour around the alluring out-door stands at the sides of the road almost anywhere in this part of the country. But the worshipers at these way-side vegetable shrinees are blocking the highway, according to officials of the Auto Club of So. Calif. Sometimes some very serious accidents and near accidents have occurred because auto owners hop out of their vehicles and leave them standing almost in the center of the road while they visit the market and pinch and tweak the fruits and vegetables. The Auto club wants to suggest that all motorists who patronize the highway markets thoughtfully pull over off the road so that other machines can continue on their way. There is a law which makes it illegal to halt your motor car in any highway in California, but perhaps there is not an officer present every minute in the vicinity of the vegetable stands. Maxwell was oversold on its first month's output of the sport touring within a few days after the announcement to dealers. A considerably enlarged production was made possible, which was immediately offset by an even larger demand, as the model became more generally known. Again ways were found to increase the output. And Maxwell officials, believing that the buying of open cars would fall off with the approach of winter and the consequent heavier sale of losed models, thought the second increased schedule would take care of the demand. Jordan, president of the Jordan Motor Car Company, has concentrated a lot of horse sense in small compass. Here are some of the questions and answers: When will the saturation point in motor cars be reached? When everyone has one and none ever wears out, and they stop growing boys. If three million automobiles are built next year how can we find room for them on the streets? By following this example of London and Paris, eliminating surface street cars, substituting flexible bus units, establishing parking areas outside of the congested district, introducing one way streets and riding in two passenger taxi cabs. What is the determining factor in the survival of companies in the automobile industry? Quality of service built into the motor car which enables the dealer to sell the second hand car at a profit. What will be the next big development in motor car construction? The general adoption of the light weight, high grade, economical motor car by the leading manufacturers because economy is the basis of everything. How many automobiles will be built in 1923? At least three million, because Ford is getting set for $500 a day. The rest of the industry will build at least one million, or half of what Ford produces. What is the greatest thing that ever happened in the motor car industry? The reduction of the Ford price to $298 will create one million new users in the kindergarten class, and take hundreds of thousands of residents of the congested areas out into the country where they can have a garden and plenty of fresh air. A magazine writer says it is unlucky to get married on Friday. That seems to be a very conservative statement of the case.
