Saturday, March 10, 1923 ANAHEIM TO MEET VAN NUYS SUNDAY AT H. S. DIAMOND Anaheim Merchants baseball team, champions of the Double A league, will play Van Nuys, winners in the Single A division, at Anaheim H. S. field Sunday afternoon. Manager Billy Knott had supposed the local would meet the Standard Oil tea mof Huntington Beach, champions of the Triple A league, scheduled here last Sunday but postponed on account of wet grounds. However, a fast game is assured with the Standard Oil team of Huntington Beach, champions of the Triple A league, scheduled here last Sunday but postponed on account of wet grounds. However, a fast game is assured with the San Fernando champs. It is possible that a week from Sunday will see a league team here, either Los Angeles, Vernon or the Chicago Cubs, as Anaheim is recognized as the strongest semi-pro team in the south. Doc Crandall, veteran Angel, who faced the locals here several weeks ago with the Standard Murphys, declared the local crew was the fastest semi-pro outfit he had ever seen. Los Angeles sporting writers have long considered that altho Anaheim was placed in the Double A division, the locals could walk away with anything in the Triple A. For this reason, there was the greatest interest in the meeting of nAaheim and Huntington Beach. Doty Bush seems to be having more than his share of tough luck. The day he was reported to the Angels to whom he was touted as the most likely new talent available in So. Cal., his finger was split while batting against Pasadena. Then, when his finger was about healed, he took a bad case of flu. He is now convulsing. Art Ramage, Anaheim's Veteran He is Emmet "Red" Ormsby, recently appointed by President Ban Johnson to the American League staff of umpires. Ormsby served with the famous Fifth Regiments of Marines and is a real fighting man, so the players had better take care this summer just what umpire they 'ride'. Ormsby has served as player and manager in the baseball world, and has well-qualified for the position of arbitrator. first baseman, received a letter the other day from his old side-kick, Harry Wolverton, manager for Seattle, offering him a job if he would report at training camp and get in condition. Art was behind the bat two years for Wolverton at Sacramento when he was a kid. While pleased to think there is still someone outside of Anaheim who considers he might get out and feel his cats. Art declined with thanks. Oil drilling may be harder work than playing baseball but the $14 per diem. The latter team rolled what would have been a record only for the big shooting of their opponents, the losers total being 2658. Harrison knocked all the class A records off the boards when he rolled 267 and 550, both marks being now records for all classes. Tanner, rolling as a sub on Bill's Cafe team 246 and 642 for the highest class C mark of the season. In the other match, the Keen Hat Store took two games from O'Donnell's Victor Cords, losing the first by one pin. O'Donnell's mark of 237 was high game and James with 560 was high man of this match. In the two-man rag time tourney being staged, Milt Varner and Eden are leading with 1179, Varner and Larrison 2nd, 1118; Varner and Varner 3rd, 1099, and O'Donnell and Larrison 4th, 1088. Eleven entries are in for the class C grid, sweepstakes for Sunday night. Silver Moon Cafe Logefeil ... 179 158 167 504 Beneke ... 226 178 188 592 P. Red should make right off the bat. He is a fast winger with the gloves and a fair bit of mercy; the bugs are in for a treat. Lee Reece, Red's opponent Tuesday, is training for the fracas as his life were at stake. Every minute he is out for a three mile race. Reece is an old head at the gym very fast, clever boy and he carries a good wallop. Young Leo and Young Otto, two big fellows billed for tae mgo, are also in training and do they go thru their paces in championship form. Paul Wilkins, that good Oklahoma lad, is down in special offer with "Irish Jimmy" Clayton of New York. Clayton did not do so in his first start here when he left to Kid Louie after four rounds rather poor work. But he says it is in better shape this time. The preliminaries, Tex Jones, Tommy Reddy, Danny Hererra, No up with Elmer Trimble, a newcomer from "Berdoo" and there will be fast curtain raiser. "Why should be spirit of mortal be proud?" Suppose this committee was to take the fire hose and thoroughly wet down this corner until the surface was slimy and treacherous. Suppose they would then ask you to drive at this corner and round at a speed of 25 miles an hour—WOULD YOU BE PREPARED TO TRY IT? Yet this is exactly the test that Vacuum Cup Tires successfully withstood as the feature event of the National Traffic Officer's Convention in San Francisco during 1920. This is positive proof of the non-skid claims which have been made for this tire. Pennsylvania Vacuum Cup Tires cost no more than ones having no claim to these advantages. Why not secure skid insurance with utmost quality when it costs you nothing additional? JOHN RUEDY & SON (DISTRIBUTORS) 419 WEST CENTER STREET ANAHEIM HUNT.
