THE PLAIN DEW
MAN WINS BATTLE AFTER 200 YEARS
ST. LOUIS, March 3 — A battle of 206 years, standing between nature and man at last has been ended—and man has won!
Barges may now go to St. Paul from New Orleans and return, carrying freight from the region surrounding the Minnesota capital for transfer to Mexico steamships without their longstanding presence of floods.
Nature is personified by the Mississippi river, churning and gurgling in its eagerness to leap the handle of levers and flow forth to lay waste the surrounding country and sweep away homes and crops.
Man is personified by the government engineers and others who have been improving the levee system. They think that after 206 years of fighting the river at last has been subdued.
"River improvements are now in condition to prevent the destructive effects of floods in all but the most extreme high water," says a report of the Mississippi river commission.
Correct this sentence: "You and Dad go to the movies alone," said little Bobby, "and I'll stay and finish my arithmetic."

URGE CENSORSHIP OF CHILDREN BOOKS
Someone sent the daughter of a New York supreme court judge a book of recent publication which had been under fire by persons seeking to cleanse American literature. Angered that the volume should have come into his daughter's hands the justice immediately announced he would seek the prosecution of those responsible for its circulation, and incidentally, take a bill to the legislature to "put teeth in the present law against books likely to impair morals."
The suppression by rigid censorship of books which are within the reach of children has been talked of for considerable time, but if laws have been enacted there efficacy is not especially apparent. While much of an unclean nature has been purged from American literature—or American Writings—there still remain daring authors and more daring publishers who are willing to run the risk of public censure for the limited class they appeal to.
The American public, as a whole, is not looking for the unclean story, and not looking for it necessarily becomes unconcerned. Without discussing the merits of the book which aroused theire of the justice, it is a fortunate thing for the mass that the lesson was brought so close to home to the lawmaker himself.
