FINE PHOTOGRAPHY IN NORMAND FILM Normand adultery and pic-tent enthusiasts in general will imagine themselves transported to Mexico or Elysium (though neither is synonymous) when "Suzanna," the petite star's next Mack Sennett super-production, is shown starting tomorrow at the California Theater under an Allied Producers and distributors Corporation release. The story of Suzanna is laid in that romantic period of California history about ten years prior to the Mexican War, and deals with the romances and adventures of that colorful race—the Spanish-Californian. The dress of the men and women of that time was somewhat similar to that of Mexico today. Their loves and pleasures, too, were much the same—horse-racing, cock-fighting, and fandangoes—all of which F. Richard Jones, the director, incorporated on the film. In that glorious day and age wealthy owners of lands and cattle were veritable kings among their neighbors, and rode in state when visiting their ranches which extended leagues upon leagues in every direction. These characters have their place in "Suzanna," for the story is laid on the ranches of the Senora Don Fernando and Don Diego, each adjacent, near Monterey. Mabel Normand's admirers will follow her amidst such scenes as these: They will sit beside her while she meditates on a beautiful slope, thickly covered with oaks, the grass having become brown in the summer heat, offering a striking contrast to the coloring of oaks. They will gaze with her into the distance, at a prospect that is varied and beautiful. Far off to the west and north they will see the rugged crest of the Sierra, with bush-grown canyons and rounded foot-hills overtopped by bare, gaunt ledges. They will look with her down into the valley and minor vales at her feet. And they will hear, as Suzanna heard, the musical notes of its song as it babbled along. SEMI-FINAL GAME AT FULLERTON FRI. W. Rolfe of Garden Grove and a Dodge owned by J. M. Chawaz of Placentia, smashed together. No one was reported seriously injured. An accident was reported from the Murphy lease-rd., where a car owned by Rob Green of La Habra, and a truck owned by Gordon Sanders of Whittier collided. The car was considerably damaged. URGES BOYS JOIN ANTI-FIRE CLUBS Memory of a near tragedy prompts the fine acting of Ernest Butterworth Jr., who plays Reddy in "The Ninety and Nine," when he rushes to the "heavy" and warns him of the danger of fire when he flings a lighted match into dry grass. Ernest was attending school in a small town near Hollywood several years ago, and was one of 30 children who almost lost their lives by fire. Another boy who had been reprimanded by the teacher in the morning deliberately set the underbrush surrounding the schoolhouse afire. It had been dry and the timbers of the school caught easily; a swerving wind brought the flames to the doorway before the teacher or any of her pupils noticed them. She marshaled the children together and they had to dash through the fire to safety. "I hate fires," said Ernest emphatically at the studio one day while he was playing in "The Ninety and Nine." "If I had my way there'd be safety first every day so far as lighted matches are concerned." "I believe that the boys of the country could be organized into anti-fire clubs if somebody would only take the pains to start it." I'd join in a minute. Every kid likes to play at being a fireman. "The Ninety and Nine" opens a 3-day showing at the United tonight.
