DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS In the agony of a wounded conscience, always look upward to God to keep thy soul steady; for, looking downward on thyself, thou shalt find nothing but what shall increase thy fear; infinite sins—good deeds few and imperfect. It is not thy faith, but God's faithfulness thou must rely on.—Elizabeth Charles. Worry kills. A tranquil spirit prolongs life. The fewer things you can get along with, the better off you are. The law must control and repress the criminal, or the criminal will cast aside the law. Make California too uncomfortable for desperate criminals to bide here and operate. Sneering at the law before children is a poor way to make good citizens out of them. It costs little more—if any more to keep premises clean and neat than to let them run, down and look slatternly. Beautiful! As a pivotal state in national politics, California is courteous with respect and vigor by both of the great political parties. About time for the Mississippi River to come to flood, break its levees and go rambling around over counties and states in its lower course. Boys and girls today have tages in learning which far surpass the limited advantage of a quarter of RECALL MAINE TRAGEDY AND WAR OF '98 Twenty-five years ago the United States Battleship Maine was blown up in Havana harbor, and scores of gallant American seamen were killed. This, in the wake of a long train of cruelties and abuses in Cuba on the part of the Spanish regime, led to war between the United States and Spain. It was a short war, marked by valorous achievements by American fighting men on land and sea. El Caney and San Juan Hill will go down in history as exemplifying the highest order of American gallantry—later Admiral Dewey's wonderful victory at Manila Bay and the destruction of the Spanish fleet under Admiral Cervera, off Santiago de Cuba, will rank among the most illustrious achievements of the United States navy. There have been many changes in this quarter of a century. But in the midst of them all the United States has kept faith with Cuba, with Porto Rico and with the Phillipines. This nation came out of that war in honor, and in honor has kept and is keeping its solemn pledges to the islands which became its dependencies or over which it exercises a benevolent protectorate. MAKE WAR OUTLAWRY IS MR. BORAH'S PLAN Put the brand of outlawry upon warfare, is the proposal of Senator Borah. He would have the United States take the lead in a movement to consider war among civilized nations a violation of international law. Mr. Borah advocates an international high court to settle disputes among nations, and holds that public opinion in all civilized lands, backing this tribunal, would be sufficient to prevent wars. Whether or not this plan is practiced, yourself that you tired of the day you should buy the price of ins and yeast a Mexican governor As a pivotal state in national politics, California is courteous with respect and vigor by both of the great political parties. Boys and girls today have stages in learning which far surpass the limited advantage of a quarter of a century, or longer ago. It is refreshing to see and hear children who are polite and thoughtful. There are many such children. There should be a great many more. It should be well understood that the chief function of a high school, college or a university is to educate students, not merely to entertain them and show them a good time. The darkest hour precedes the dawn. Europe is experiencing its dark hours. Lot it be hoped that the dawn of peace and better things is near at hand for that troubled old continent. Death is not bribed by the vain trappings of rich and powerful monarchs and potentates. The dead Pharaoh is just as much dead in his embellished and luxurious tomb as is the fellah who lies in a sand dune on the Sahara. Death is death, and no power or might or luxury or vain pomp and show make death any less real. MR. Whether or not this plan is practicable is open to debate. But any and every movement, or suggested movement, to put an end to warefare is to be welcomed. For such movements serve to keep permanent peace before the world, and to keep interest keen everywhere in finding a deterrent for warefare. Many impossible and impracticable suggestions are made. But some time a wise, practical, workable, acceptable method will be found, and the world will have reason to rejoice that the friends of peace persisted in agitation until the glorious goal is reached. Great reform movements come to fruition only through long and sustained agitation. People with short memories make poor liars. The average man's idea of Truth is largely theoretical. The surest preventative of Brights disease is a shortage of cash. Outside of the dates of his birth and death, nothing worth while can be mentioned on the average man's tombstone. EDITORIAL PARAGRAPHS (By Robert Quillen) Ruhral scenes are not all peaceful. Why are they called film plots? A film is something you can see through. Divorces don't multiply so rapidly in a community where the people do. Naturally enough, when the world is upside down the dregs come to the top. If he doesn't care how he looks, he has fallen beneath hope or climbed beyond competition. There is nothing new under the sun, except perhaps, the queer things a legislative body thinks of. Correct this sentence: "Billy," said the father, "you may have my head set for a while, but call me when the next sermon begins." The final outcome of that little Ruhr matter should throw some light on the theory that hell is paved with good intentions. Mrs. Ellie Kite, acquitted wuz quietly married t' Lester Moon at an early hour t'day. Some folks git credit fer bein' patient when they're really got an unsprightly liver. NEW YORK, Feb. 19.—Castles in Scotland are not the only halls where mysterious towers and sliding panels make life complicated and interesting. Right here in one of New York's most modern and business-like sky-scrapers, those same sliding panels are to be found—if one knows the way to find them. In a certain suite of offices in the Equitable building, at 12v Broadway, there are secret doors, concealed by panels and bookcases, which allow disappearances as mysterious and as sudden as those which take place in baronial halls of medieval romances or on the stage in the mystery plays of the moment. The motion picture can now invade our daylight hours. The only difficulties which have clung to the mechanical side of the pictures have been the necessity of darkness for their satisfactory exhibition and the plains of those in the audience who sit far at one side and see their heroes and heroines distorted out of all recognition. Now those have been overcome. At a dinner the other night at the Metropolitan club, the first daylight screen for motion picture use was introduced to a group of prominent men of this city. Pescy Norman Furber, F.S.I. F.R.G.S., formerly partner of Lord Cowdray in Mexico and discoverer of the district known there as Purbero, gave the demonstration. The screen, which Will Hays says will revolutionize exhibition, is of some queer substance, flexible and yet fireproof, translucent and glimmery, and all cored with honeymeal over it. WISE AND WITTY Thrift is the knack of convincing yourself that you'd probably grow tired of the darned thing even if you should buy it. The price of sugar is up, but raisins and yeast are holding firm. Mexican government has seized 2,000,000 acres of land. The middle acre would be a fine place for a singing school. Suits with two pairs of trousers are in demand. Why not throw in an extra coat and vest also. Detroit cop says his wife never voluntarily kissed him. Then she must have resisted an officer. You may select the road you want to pursue but never depend on luck to establish a pull with fate. For lessons paid you have the right to use them as well as to avoid them. Complacency is a hindrance to progress and the destroyer of personality. Children's play sharpens their minds; when grown-ups play, they should relax them. If your given word will not stand, your signature will not bind. Plain Dealer Want Ads Get Results The man who catches breakfast at our lunch counter seems to think the daily dozen means fried egg. No lame duck need suffer if he has a typewriter and a little knowledge of official scandal. The boy stood on the burning deck years ago, but there's nobody to make it hot for the modern youth with a cold deck. There’s one nice thing about having deficits all over the premises. Power things are considered acts of war. The honeymoon is over when he begins to remember that he once had a number of delightful men friends. "A minor's note is worthless," says the lawyer. At any rate, the plaintive note of a minority appears to have no value. Some people think they are good just because they enjoy being horrified by the sins of those who are caught. The chief trouble with the Volstead law isn't defective teeth, but itching palms. The reason lighting never strikes twice in the same place is because it adequately wrecks the ultimate consumer the first time. In the roaring Ferties, there is a shop where a man may step in and for a comparatively small sum of cash, deck himself with the cross ribbons, decorations and medals, usually worn by visiting royalty or near royalty. The shop keeper explains that while most of his customers are merely on their way to a costume party, there is a goodly sprinkling of them who are preparing to strut their way about the hotel corridors in every pretense of being Somebody.
