PASADENA MANAGER "MOANING" ABOUT ARBITER QUESTION That evening the club be guest on tomorrow's Double A Winter League championship at Anaheim H.S. field between Anaheim and Pasadena worth going miles to see is evidenced by the fact that Irish Meusel of World Series fame and Frank Kerwin, well-known Los Angeles sports writer, will be on hand. Owl who is a member of Anaheim, this lodge, is a strong partisan from one locals and will probably be on the Anaheim bench with a word of encouragement. Manager Loren Ury of the Pasadena team, long noted for his "moaning," particularly when it comes to conflict with Anaheim which has already twice defeated his Crown City crew in championship tits the last two years, is again "weeping" on the shoulders of powers that be behind the So.Cal. Baseball Managers Assn. Ury is worried about the umpires. He's afraid that two Anaheim arbiters will be sent in. Nothing of the kind had ever happened before but "you never can tell with such a tough team as Anaheim's," wrote Ury. Ury's worries about this question in the past hasn't always tended to put his tea min the best graces of the referees. With real baseball weather as the last few days, the biggest crowd of the season is a foregone conclusion tomorrow. AT ANEVA TUESDAY Another promising card is being looked forward to by local fight fans Tuesday night. Manager Billy Darnley is coming thru with six-high-powered bouts. A big feature will be a twin-bout event between four good boys. Jack Lee, the husky sailor-lad who made such a good impression with the bugs last Tuesday night when he stowed away Young Otto in three rounds after a hurricane mill, is on again. This time he is pitted against a boy like himself, a former service man, Johnny Farrel, just out of the army and preparing himself for a strenuous boxing campaign. Reports have it that he is a fast two-handed mixer with a stinging wallop. He was the winner of his weight in a recent division championship. Lee is anxious for a crack at Kid Mexico, Huntington Beach slugger, and he will be oblified if he gets by the ex-army boy. The other half of the twin bill will be furnished by our "Own Joe" Chaney and Jimmy Mussol, fast San Bernardino boxer. Chaney is probably making his farewell appearance before his departure for the north where he has been promised several bouts. Joe is now in prime shape after his enforced lay-off due to a broken hand and is raring to go. Musso is a clever boy and a fair puncher besides. A special event between Kid Louis fast Blancheau beauty and "Irish Jimmy" Clayton is also down on the bill. The preliminaries ought to furnish lots of action for some good material has been signed up. Johnny Nardes and Young Buffy meet at 125 pounds. Battling pty versus Lion Davies at 138 pounds and Young Lee mixes with Frankie Pleo at 105 pounds. Scene on Storm King Highway along the Hudson River. An asphalt macadam surface 18 to 20 feet in width provides a smooth dustless and pleasing pavement over which the motorist may travel in perfect comfort and safety and enjoy the marvelous view of the Hudson River far below him. The Lackawanna Trail is said by many travellers to be the most beautiful highway in America. It is 33 miles long and for two-thirds of the distance is paved with sheet asphalt highly comparable to the best city. AT ANAHEIM HILL New patients at the lum include: Mrs. H. D. Chartres Anaheim Phone "The popular impression that the old Roman roads have never been surpassed or equalled is a wholly inconsequent one," says Herbert Quick, the noted writer. Fifth Avenue is infinitely superior to the Appian Way when the latter is at its best and was constructed not more than one-sixth of the length of the Appian Way. The old roads constructed their highways in a brutal massiveness which deprived the destructive agencies of the citizens and of man. This required movement of enormous quantities of stone and mortar and the enforced labor of many hundred thousand shaves. It is probable that under the most favorable conditions it would cost 200,000 to reproduce a pile of the Appian Way. While this celebrated example of Roman engineering had a total thickness of about 3 feet, Fifth Avenue has a total thickness of about 11 inches. The explanation of this difference lies in the intelligent development of the science of highway engineering in modern times. Beginning with John L. Macadam, the principle has been developed that by keeping the earth subgrade dry an enormous load can be sustained with a relatively thin foundation and pavement, consequently drainage has been given more exhaustive consideration. Protected Against Moisture. The second principle not fully recognized until the immediate present is that foundations and pavements must be protected against the encroachments of water from the outside and against the shattering effect of sudden changes in temperature. The portland cement concrete foundation of heavily travelled city streets and of many country highways is, therefore, surfaced by a waterproof cushion of asphalt which protects the foundation against water, against the expansion and contraction accompanying temperature changes and against the shattering effect of heavy traffic. As a result of this intelligent design there is no occasion for the massive structure which characterized the old Roman pavements. Today the Fifth Avenue type of pavement and other types comparable to it are rapidly finding favor on country highways as the cost, contrary to some widespread opinion. VICTOR CORDS GO WILD ON ALLEYS O'Donnell's Victor Cords made the roots sit up and take notice when they won all three games from Whittier No. 2 in the City League last night and in doing so broke the high game record of the league, shooting 767 in their last game. Their 2669 total was three pins short of the lacque high series. O'Donnell with 244 shot the high game of the week. Larrison with 233 and Bridgeman with 222 were close up. Gordon kept up his good work, shooting 580 pins, being tied with Larrison for high totals. Bill's Cafe increased its lead at the expense of the Toyland Baby Dolls, the latter team having a very bad night, losing all three games. Baker, released by Bill's Cafe, signed with the Victor Cords and got away with a 200 score in his first game. Bridgeman, shooting his first league game, helped break the record when he rolled 222 in the big game. The Columbia River Highway in its long route passes through the gorge of the Columbia River, on across the Willamette Valley, through the mountains and ends high above the breakers on the Pacific Coast. Mighty cliffs, beautiful waterfalls, grottos and a vast expanse of mountain, hill, valley and sea render this highway probably the most impressive in America. The pavement is a combination of asphalt and stone, known as asphaltic concrete, differing but little in appearance from sheet asphalt and equal to it for highway surfacing. Other notable highways of longer extent are rapidly nearing completion and will afford rare touring opportunities to the motorist. Among such highways are the Lincoln Highway, the Santa Fe Trail and the Dixie Highway. AT ANAHEIM HOSPITAL New patients at the local sanitarium include: Mrs. H. D. Anaheim 130-pound and second teams play Santa Ana Monday and first and 110-pound teams Tuesday. Santa Ana has no victories to her credit. If Anaheim defeats the county-seat lads, she will step into third place. Coach Elliot's lads hope to spring another surprise on Santa Ana as they did the other time, when all four games were on the local court. Fullerton hopes to add another victory to her uninterrupted chain when she plays Orange at Fullerton Tuesday. One does not install a piece of labor-saving mechanism because it suits his fancy; but because the efficiency of the business requires it. He expects the new machine to reduce his cost to operate—perhaps to make a better product—and thus aid him in meeting competition and making larger profits. Advertising is exactly similar. The man who refuses to consider it as a possible expedient, simply shuts his eyes on one of the problems of his business. He might as well ignore the banks as sources of credit when he has need to borrow capital. Advertising will not make his product or his service any better than they are; but it will bring him the full benefits of their merits. It will not eliminate wastefulness in his factory or his store; but it will reduce his cost to operate. It will not make illogical selling methods successful; but it will assist good selling methods, and often point the way for improving them. Advertising is the most inexpensive motive power that the manufacturer or merchant can buy today. It is a form of stimulus that brings excellent returns on the investment.
