YOU CAN'T START ANY YOUNG Desperate For Clothing, Russians Use Animal Skins; Hoover Devises Relief Plan Russia is running out of rags, according to American Relief Administration officials on the ground who are alarmed about the clothing shortage and are writing for help in the emergency. Practically all respectable clothing gave out long ago. The famine sufferers sold it last winter for food. Now they are reduced to paper, sack cloth, torn carpets and ripped-up mattresses. Then these are nearly worn away and unless more clothing is supplied, million children and several million adults will suffer extreme hardships from exposure through the long Northern Winter. The most serious feature is the danger of starvation. More than 600,000 children are being fed by America. They get their one and only meal a day at the American Relief Administration food institutes scattered through Russia. The homes without furniture, heat or food. The American Relief Administration has inaugurated a clothing remittance system to meet this emergency. Twenty dollars sent to the American Relief Administration headquarters, 42 Broadway, New York, will buy and deliver a clothing package containing enough material to clothe a family for the winter. In each package is: near five yards of warm dark wool cloth enough to make one suit of clothes; for an adult or two suits for a child; 4 yards of black lining; 13 yards of muslin sufficient to make four suits of underwear; 8 yards of fannelette sufficient for two men's shirts or women's shirt waists and buttons and thread to make up these garments. Several thousand banks in the United States have agreed to receive and forward funds for clothing. WALNUT GROWERS’ MEETING AT PUENTE Walnut growers from every producing section of Calif. will gather at the Fifth Annual Institute next Saturday, Feb. 17th at Puente. A special program covering cultural and marketing phases of the industry has been arranged by the Joint Walnut Departments of Orange, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties. Some 200 growers from Orange co are planning to attend the conclave for an all day meeting. The walnut packing house, at Puente, the largest one of its kind in the world, will be the scene of the meeting. Provision has been made to serve coffee and cream free to all bringing their picnic lunch. Growers are invited to bring their lunch baskets and enjoy the noon hour with their neighbors from immediate and further removed districts. The following program will start at 10 a.m. and will resume at 1:30 p.m. after lunch. 1. What We Are Up Against—Impressions from a World Tour, Carlyle Thorpe, General Manager, California Walnut Growers Ass'n. 2. What the Farm Bureau—Extension Service eMans, and What it Holds for the Walnut Growers—A. C. Hardison, President California Farm Bureau Federation. 3. Altogether—Let's Clean Up the Moth and Aphis (What to do When to do it—and How to do it.)—Robb W. Hodgson, Farm Advisor Los Angeles County. 4. All About the Irrigation Problems—Dr. L. D. Batchelor, Citrus Experiment Station. 5. How about Dehydration?—Prof. A. W. Christie, Division of Food Products, College of Agriculture. 6. Let's Jazz Up Our Harvesting Methods—H. C. Sharp, Walnut Growers Association. 7. The Tree as the Unit of the Industry—W. B. Hooper, Extension Specialist in Walnut Culture. RUSSIA MAKES VODKA FROM FOODS, GRAINS MOSCOW, —Petrograd is trying to come back. A number of factories are being reopened in the former capital of the old Russia. These are largely for the manufacture of vodka, which is booze of 40 horsepower. This Russian drink is 40 per cent alcohol and has some kick. The newly formed spirit-trust is building 10 factories at Petrograd of which six areractically completed and two of them are turning out vodka. Since Russia decided to be wet again, the manufacture of vodka is being resumed on a big scale. The thirsty Russians have no cause to be worried over the supply, for in addition to the stored liquor being released, 100 factories are making vodka out of potatoes, grain and sugar. Under the Czaristic regime a certain amount of the revenues of the sales of vodka was devoted to educate the people as to the bad influences of the vodka. The present regime, too, intends to devote a certain amount for the education of the people for which purpose a certain sum will be handed over to the department of education Pharaoh Tutenkhamun, distinguished ruler of Europe 3000 years ago, will have his body X-rayed, if they find it. We know what the Does will say when they view the plates. That his death was caused by abscessed teeth. AUCTION!
