ANAHEIM BASEBALL FANS MUST GO TO SAWTELLE SUNDAY Anaheim baseball fans must go clear to Sawtelle, almost to Santa Monica, Sunday to see the local Merchants battle it out with Pasadena for the gonfalon of the Double A league. Manager Billy Knott of Anaheim refused to take his crew to Pasadena for the crucial game, since the last game between the oldtime rivals was played at Brookside park, and Manager Loren Ury declined an invitation to come here. So the Baseball Managers Ass’n had to step into the breach and decide upon a neutral field. The championship of the league was to have been determined by a three-game series but both teams agreed to decide it with one game. Anaheim was anxious to get over with in order to take on the Standard-Murphy outfit, which held the locals to a 1 to 0 battle last Sunday. The Irish Drillers are considered much better sportsmen and draw a bigger gate than the Pasadena bunch. Fans will see Doty Bush but a couple more times with the locals as the fast second-bagger has been ordered to report with the Angel rookies at Elsinore, Feb. 19. According to the baseball critic in today’s Examiner, Doty is considered by Red Baldwin as the likeliest looking kid he has seen in years. S. is planning to enter two relay teams in the A.A.A.U. meet at Occidental College on the 17th, it was announced today. Verne McDermott is to enter the pole vaulting contest. SURPRISES WORLD IN ACCEPTING MATCH (By Sargum Sprout) Old Jess Willard gave the world quite a surprise in his acceptance of a go with young Floyd Johnson, and it is for charity too. About four thirds of the fans figured Jess to be hankering after the coin of the realm rather than honor, but he must realize that he is up against a tough proposition in this young Johnson and if he is playing for the loosers end of title match with Dempsey he is taking a long chance. Jess really believes that he can whip Dempsey. He knows that he was not in condition when he made his miserable showing at Toledo. He under rated Dempsey and wants to meet him when in condition. A bout with Johnson will give a line on Willard's ability. The commission will know if he is in condition to go through a title match or not. The bout will also prove to Willard, whether he has slipped back any in the years of idleness. Charlie White is going to have another crack at the lightweight championship. Charlie is a champion in every respect until he enters the ring in a title match, he seems to be followed by a hooodoo for in his many attempts to gain the title he has fallen short by a blow or so. White has been the real lightweight contender for years, and each time he has gone into a title match he is considered an even chance if not the favorite. Maybe he will shake his jinks this time and retire Benny Leonard by the regular way rather than to have Leonard with draw from the ring, undefeated. Red Killefer, manager of the Los Angeles baseball team is combing the woods for young players. When spring practice opens there will be a young army of youngsters strutting their stuff, among them our own. GUN CLUB LEASES FIVE ACRES; FIRST SHOOT SUNDAY A.M. The first regular shoot of the Orange-co Gun club will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, two miles west of Anaheim and 1-4 mile north of County-rd on Brookhurst-ave., where five acres have been leased for shooting grounds. A standard Liggett trap has already been installed. About 40 have already signed or signified their intention of seeking membership with Secretary Ben Christlebow. Regulation trap ammunition will be available on the grounds and all who are interested in shooting will be welcome. Mr. Nelson, coast representative of the Winchester Arms Co., will be present to help start things off right. It is planned to have a series of prize and trophy shoots in the very near future. S. S.
