JOHN DANIEL
(W. E. Allen, California Biological Feature Service)
He was kidnapped when a little baby and afterward taken with a lot of other captives, only remotely akin to him, to a large city where his master gave him little care. He was poorly fed so that his growth was stunted and he was weak and rickety as he passed from babyhood to young childhood. For much of the time he was locked up and left alone to weep and shriek in awful loneliness. Finally, he was seen and rescued by Major Rupert Penny of the British Royal Air Force who took him into a refined English home, gave him proper food, provided companionship and (with the aid of his aunt Miss Cunningham) trained him in the ways of advanced civilization.
For a little more than two years John Daniel lived the life of an ordinary child in the London home, where he sat at the table with the family and romped about the house twice daily with Major Penny, besides occasional play with visiting children. But he demanded more or less direct care by either Major Penny or Miss Cunningham which they felt unable to give, and so they finally agreed to sell him to an agent for Ringling Brothers for transfer to this country. In New York, home-sickness, confinement and improper care so preyed upon him that he died in three weeks after arrival.
Such are the outstanding features in the history of the only gorilla known to have been successfully adopted into a civilized family. My attention was first attracted to John's sad experience by the short story of his life written by Miss Cunningham and published in the "Zoological Society Bulletin" of the New York Zoological Society, September 1921. The American side of the story (which is not very creditable) appeared in the Saturday Evening Post for January 20, 1923, on page 75.
It is notable that although Miss Cunningham says she had a natural dislike for anything in the shape of a monkey or ape, she easily became interested in John when her nephew directed attention to him. She trained him in the same habits of cleanliness and propriety as if he were a child in an ordinary family and he evidently had the run of the house in about the same way as most children in orderly households. He opened and shut doors and windows at

dressed to go out. He also refused to take the coarser part of a cut of meat and insisted on having a piece from the finer part which he pointed out. No effort was made to teach him tricks or anything beyond the most necessary routine of house life because Major Penny wished to see the natural intelligence as it developed in a young gorilla.
Except that he had no power of speech it seems to be evident that John Daniel was more successful in adapting himself to life in a highly civilized household than would have been a child from many tribes of savages. This rather surprisingly indicates an intelligence at least equal to that amongst the lower race of human beings.
In the Saturday evening Post story the Ringling agent himself says that on account of misunderstandings John was "literally kidnapped" (after being bought for $32,000) from the London home. Evidently he was then treated like any ordinary museum specimen for the agent concludes his version of John's history with "I think myself that he might have lived if allow former habitats. He opened and shut doors and windows at will or as told to do so and he replaced books which he had taken from book cases in the same way as any well trained child. He liked to go to a window overlooking the street and (if permitted) to unlock and open it and to greet the crowd by clapping his chest and hands, after which he would (at command) close and lock the window again.
His table manners were very good. He would pull up his own chair, eat very slowly, and he never snatched at food offered to him. He was especially pleased to drink water from a tumbler. He did not often take bread, but he did like fruits, jams and jellies and afternoon tea. He took great pleasure in getting fruits which had been purposely placed on a high shelf so as to give him the impression that they were being put out of his reach. His only standard food was milk. Other foods he preferred to change frequently, and he insisted on their being fresh.
Some of his mishevous tricks were surprisingly similar to those of any child. For instance, he delighted to take everything out of a waste basket and to scatter the contents all over the room. When told to do so he would then carefully pick it all up and put it in the basket again although looking to be very much hored by that part of the performance. He also liked to run past people who seemed to be nervous about him and give a slap on the leg as he went by.
The most prominent case of reasoning by John was that of getting (without any suggestion or previous experience) a newspaper and placing it on Miss Cunningham's lap so that she might hold him when she had refused to do so on account of being on account of misunderstandings John was "literally kidnapped" (after being bought for $32,000) from the London home. Evidently he was then treated like any ordinary museum specimen for the agent concludes his version of John's history with "I think myself that he might

have lived it allowed to stick to his former habits. He had been used to going around as he pleased and being entertained and amused almost continuously—so he succumbed to a changed order of existence." It is stated, however, that in the three weeks of his New York life John Daniel drew for the Ringlings more than the $32,000 paid for him. With an earning capacity of $500,000 per year it seems strange that he could not have been treated more like the young gentleman which he had been taught to be.
Sad as it may be there is nothing really new in the experience of John Daniels. Civilized man is always intent upon interfering in the natural life of savage beasts, under the presence of improving their existence. In most cases, as explorers and travellers have shown again and again, such interference is as disastrous as it was in the case of John Daniel.
It took man many millions of years to develop from a water creature. You can't expect him to get accustomed to a dry land in one generation.
