BALDWIN WELL TO MAKE OIL HISTORY IN WESTERN FIELDS (With Oil Operators) A month ago when the Machri Brothers brought in an 8000-barrel well on the Babonett property it was considered the last word in oil production for So. Calif., or the entire West for that matter. The greatness of the Machris well sank into insignificance Sunday when the Petroleum Midway brought in a 1200 barrel well on the Baldwin property. The advent of this giant producer marks the greatest achievement in petroleum production in the West. The well is a masterpiece of the oil man's art in that it is not only the greatest oil producer ever completed in the southern field, but it is producing a gravity of oil never before heard of in the famous Santa Fe Springs high gravity field, and dom produced anywhere in the California field. This new monarch of production is making 36.4 gravity oil. A well producing 12,000 bbls of 36.4 gravity oil is truly a great wonder, and puts the Santa Fe Springs field at the top of the list of the world's great light oil producing districts. The advent of the monster producer marks the Petroleum Midway's greatest success in the California field. T. J. Crumpton field manager of the Petroleum Midway under whose direction the new marvel of production was drilled and completed has drilled some of the state's biggest wells and developed some of the leading California fields, but he will have to admit that the Santa Fe Springs gusher is his greatest triumph. The Baldwin well was completed at 4212 feet, the 6'1-4 water string was set at 4121 and the well drilled 90 feet into the sand. This great well was finished in the Meyer sand and gives an inkling of the superb richness of the greatest high gravity oil sand ever found in the California field. And of that, the soprano is most faithfully reproduced by the transmitting microphone and the receiving instruments. The most difficult sound to broadcast is that of the cornet, or any other of the brass instruments. And what makes the saxophone and bassoon so troublesome is the clicking of the stops. They aren't heart over the footlights when an artist plays directly before an audience. But the delicate microphone catches the sounds of these clicks and not only records them, but exaggerates them in transmission. Experimentation with all sorts of microphones finally solved this trouble. Now the piano can be reproduced with quite a degree of fidelity. The stringed instruments, especially the violin, have given no trouble from the beginning. They can be reproduced most faithfully. Instruments of percussion such as the Bells and xylophone, and wood wind instruments like the clarinet and flute, are also easily reproduced by radio. LONG EMBALMING JOB FOR UNDERTAKER MENA, Ark. Feb. 6.—Regal, a 25-foot python, exhibited here by the Cudney & Fleming shows, furnished the longest embalmring job ever undertaken in Mena. The reptile died and the show management engaged J. C. Frazier, a local embalmer, to preserve the body. The snake is said to be the largest in the United States and was brought from the East Indies only a few months ago. On the Butterworth property No. 4 has been finished at 4852. To date the deepest Santa Fe producer is the Standard Oil Company's Brownrigg-Keller No. 1 at 4762. The Amalgamated Oil Company started the Western Petroleum world with the deepest well on record at Huntington Beach a couple of months ago. The Huntington Beach record still stands, as the famous Milley-Keck 19 was completed at 4949. The General Petroleum's Santa Fe 61 completed in the Meyer sand is scheduled to make a showing at Santa Fe Springs and do credit to a company that has brought in some of the biggest wells in the field. Santa Fe 61 was finished at 4495 and will flow thru a 4 1-4 oil string. The Standard Oil Co. claimed a portion of the production honors in the Springs field last week by completing a 4700 barrel high gravity producer on the Walker Community property. Walker Community No. 1 stopped drilling at 4312 and started off at 4700 barrels, 34 gravity. Interest in the Standard Oil Co.'s north line well Brownrigg-Keller No. 2 is not lagging with the hole down 5100 feet and the pay sand not in sight yet. The Broewnrigg-Keller 2 well seems to have fixed the northern boundary line of the field pretty definitely in one section of the field. The Elliott Petroleum Co. has decided to deepen its west extension well and put it down into the Meyer sand before putting it on completed production. At 4336 the Elliott well made a nice showing, producing 800 barrels of 35.4 gravity oil for several days. Los Angeles St. FAMOUS FILM STAR AND HER COMPANY AT THE CALIFORNIA One of the greatest theatrical scoops ever consumed for Anaheim was closed yesterday by the management of the California theater whereby Helen Jerome Eddy, world-famous motion picture star, and regarded as one of the most popular landmarks on the silver-sheet today, has been engaged with her entire dramatic company for a personal appearance at the California theater tomorrow in a wonderful stage sketch entitled "Case Number 26". At enormous expense, this time dramatic company will be featured on the regular vaudeville program, as there will be four other dandy acts in conjunction, and also Mr. and Mrs. Carter De Haven will be seen in their humorous laugh-making picture "The Girl in the Taxi". Miss Eddy is undoubtedly one of the greatest stars in pictures today. She is also a phenomenal address of renown, and her many admirers will have an opportunity to see her personally in her great act. The balance of the cast is brilliant also. On the same Bill McDonald, Mack and Gerard will offer a comedy musical novelty that is said to be a gem. The famous Flying Bartletts, noted serialists will perform daring feats of skill for the entertainment of local theatergoers. Ain Vivian, well-known "shooting star", will present a shooting act that is wonderful to see. She is a dead shot, it is said, and her offering is unique. Murray and Clarke, a pair of "laughsmiths" complete the vaudeville bill. All in all it is unquestionably one of the most superb combination programs ever seen in this city. Regular prices will prevail. FEARS HORSES BUT WINS GREAT RACE "All my life I've been afraid of horses," says the man who rides "The Hottentot." To victory in a dangerous race, he fears horses more than anything else and still wins in one of the most exciting steeple-chases ever filmed. He wins both the race and the girl in the case. And he does it on sheer nerve. Everyone thrills to deeds that dare, to cheery courage. And that's one reason why everyone will love the character of Sam Harrington in "The Hottentot," Thomas H. Ince's comedy drama coming Friday to the California theater. Sam is fearless on the seas and has braved trifles like typhoons and the wild men of the Cannibal Isles. But he's afraid of horses and admits it until suddenly he finds himself forced to ride in a horse race or lose the girl he loves and his own self-respect. It doesn't take him long to make his choice. He may be afraid of horses but he would rather be dead than brand himself a coward. So he says to Peggy Fairfax: "I'm either going to make you look up at me and say 'Good boy, Sam,' or look down and say 'Don't he look natural?' "The Hottentot" furnishes laughter and excitement from beginning to end. It starts with a race between a runaway horse and an auto and ends with a unique steepelechase. The action never lags. One comic situation develops into another even funnier as Sam flounders from deep water to bottomless depths. Such a man is decent because of his religious training, yet he denies God and becomes a stumbling block to others. It he stands with the gang against Christ he will go where the gang goes." The evangelist said that if hell meant no more than eternal home-sickness it would be punishment. To be banished from Christ and heaven and all the loved ones and choice spirits that earth ever knew. "Some people say that God is too good to punish eternally but," said Vawter, "the Bible says he does and that is enough, although it is gratifying to us when we can see the justice but when God does the same thing, we say 'Oh, no God.'" "Let's put it the way it should be," continued the evangelist. "God loves the decent people so well and he has fixed it so they will not have to associate with the evil ones of earth. Heaven wouldn't be heaven if all the liars, the thieves, the thugs and the toughs were there." The evangelist made it plain that the duration of hell is eternal for the same qualifying adjective is used for hell as is used for heaven. "In conclusion, Jesus said: 'He that believeth not shall be damned,' so it was found that hell is a place where all the evil of earth and those who refuse to accept and obey Christ go." "You are either going to heaven or hell, and not to heaven or hell or some place else," asserted Vawter. "There is no hope without the Saviour." At the close there were six additions to the church, making 40 in the nine days of meeting. Services tonight begin at 7:30 with rousing songs. S. CALIF.
