AUTOMOBILE SECTION VOL. XXVI—NO. 144 DARIO RESTA EX - CHAMP ENTRY LOS ANGELES, Feb. 3. — Dario Resta, world’s champion speedway driver in 1916, who enters a motor race for the first time on the Pacific Coast since that year when he climbs behind the wheel of a durant Special here Feb. 26, will leave New York City Feb. 6, in company with Fred J. Wagner, veteran starter, according to a wire received from Resta today by A. M. Young, secretary-manager of the Los Angeles Speedway Association. Resta’s entry was announced two weeks ago in press disclosures from New York. He arrives in Los Angeles next week Friday. His arrival here will be looked upon as a sort of home-coming of the champion, for his reputation for masterly driving and thrill productivity in the Santa Monica Vanderbilt event in 1916, his winning both the Vanderbilt and Grand Prix Races in 1915 at San Francisco, left him a home in the minds of scores of thousands of speed followers in California. Resta was one of the most popular speed champions that the fans ever knew. He is notorious for the antics that have won him many a race, and is a steady and deliberate pilot with mechanical intuition that has served him ably with winning. His 1916 victory as champion shows a remarkable record for none of his points. CLUB DISCOURAGES FREE AUTO RIDERS Serious consequences, culminating in the death of Leslie L. Nichols on a lonely desert highway near the Imperial Valley, are resulting in this part of the state from the mistaken philanthropy of motorists in giving strangers free rides. According to officials of the Auto Club of So. Calif., this practice has never been so dangerous as at the present time. Highways in the west during the winter months are infested with hard boiled and desperate characters, who make it a practice to beg rides from motorists with a deliberate intent of committing robbery, say the club officers. If necessary, these fellows will not stop at murder. A wide spread campaign to discourage the giving of free rides to strangers is to be launched by the club this winter in connection with its Safety Bureau work. Age is no indication of the desperate design of these people. The two boys who, it is alleged, have confessed to the murder of Nichols on the desert road, have given their ages as less than 18. In the cases of school boys and girls who beg rides from the side of the road, greater harm is done to them than to the motorist who grants their wish, as statistics prove that vagrancy and runaways are encouraged by such so-called kindly acts. Don’t give strangers free rides, urges the club, for in addition to the ethics of the matter and the personal danger to the driver, there is a possibility of a serious damage suit if the passenger should be injured in an accident due to the negligence of the driver. January Sales of Dunton New Record January was the biggest sales month in the history of George Dunton, Ford, Fordson and Lincoln distributor. Dunton and his men delivered 82 vehicles, including 41 new cars, 34 used cars, five new tractors and two used tractors. Never since he opened the business in Anaheim has Dunton equalized this record. The showing of the past month is considered all the more remarkable in that January is usually one of the dull months. Recently Dunton announced a gross business of more than $450,000 during 1922. This figure is expected to be well exceeded this year. OFFER DAY-NIGHT SERVICE After the announcement made last Saturday that the firm of West Bros were now in their new home, the finest, largest and best equipped auto electrical and battery station in Orange county, a great many people have visited their place. Many per-haps have tested their service thru curiosity and all have congratulated those in charge upon the service rendered, the lighting facilities, the enormous amount of room, the modern equipment, etc. The large-new constant potential battery charging system has aroused much curiosity among local motorists. West Bros. state that in many instances batteries have been put upon the line entirely discharged or "dead" and in many instances are entirely charged in four to five hours time. Eight hours is the average time required to charge the average battery, but to avoid disappointment West Bros. advertise and guarantee 12 hour service, providing the battery is in good condition. If a battery is not in good condition, as most motorists are aware, it will not hold a charge if left upon the charging line indefinitely. West Bros. are now open 24 hours per day having a man on duty all night. If you Mr. POOR OIL, GREASE COSTLY MANY WAYS The importance of good oil is emphasized by Nenno & Bock, distributors of Veedol products, including Veedol Fordol. This week Dell Fisher came into the store and announced that he had driven his Ford more than 1000 miles on a quart of Veedol. As a matter of fact, he can run another 500 without exhausting the quart. "Poor oil gums up the motor and bearings," says the firm. "It doesn't penetrate all parts of the bearing surface. It won't lubricate the cylinder walls, which then become scored. Poor oils in the transmission gear or differential leak out when they are worn thin. "Similarly, dry, stringy or hard grease make the bearings dry out." "Cheap lubricants are expensive in the mechanical damage they cause and the lower gasoline mileage." Nenno & Bock are exclusive dealers in 600-W lubricants, greases and gear compounds and in Veedol oils and greases and official dealers for the Alemite system and Blissich penetrating oils and Valvoline." 734 MAXWELLS IN ONE ORDER One of the record orders received this year by an individual company was telegraphed to the Maxwell-Chalmers organization at the time of the New York show, it was revealed by Arthur E. Barker, vice-president of the Maxwell motor corporation. The order called for approximately $1,000,000 worth of motor cars and Get the Genuine; Join the A. C. So. Cal. Scores of motorists are complaining of being solicited to join an "automobile club" under the impression that they were affiliating with the Automobile Club of So. Cal., when in reality they come to find out they have joined another and less important organization. In some instances where motorists have questioned such receipts saying, "This doesn't look like the Auto Club of So. Cal," the solicitor has said; "Well, we are all the same anyway, as we all belong to the parent organization." Officials of the Auto Club of So. Cal. wish to be clearly understood that the organization is affiliated in no way with other clubs, although it does exchange all courtesies with certain other organizations who are known to be in good standing throughout the United States. BROWN REFLECTOR SELLS WELL HERE S. R. Walter announces that he has sold 22 pairs of Brown reflectors since he took over the distribution here. It sends a light 475 feet ahead of the vehicle, giving the driver plenty of time to prepare for a curve or an oncoming vehicle. Leading corporations use it, including the principal stage lines and oil companies. The reflector carries this guarantee: "We agree to refund your money and replace your old equipment (adjusted according to the law). It was revealed by Arthur E. Barker, vice-president of the Maxwell motor corporation. The order called for approximately $1,000,000 worth of motor cars and was signed by Alfred DeCozen of the DeCozen Motor company, Maxwell-Chalmers dealers of Newark, N. J. The text of the telegram was made public by Mr. Barker and read as follows: "After looking over the show enter my order for 734 motor cars for delivery in January, February and March. Detail shipping orders and specifications by mail. Tell Mr. Barker for me personally that the DeCozan Motor company most fully appreciate all the wonderful constructive work of the new Maxwell-Chalmers organization and has absolute confidence in its policy and determination to keep Maxwell-Chalmers in front rank. Tell him that we are looking forward to the biggest year business that we have ever had. Start rolling cars now. We are set to go." Mr. Barker stated that the shipment of the order will require about 144 freight cars or approximately five trainloads. GAS AT 18 CENTS AT LOCAL STATION Gasoline at 18 cents a gallon is announced by J. P. Holditch, whose station is on South Los Angeles-st. This is the lowest mark in Anaheim. It is a cent and one-half below the price of gas by book. Holditch has entered into a special contract with a Signal Hill oil company and saves by doing his own hauling from the refinery, he said. Last evening the company kept open until 5 o'clock and will do so again tonight. The showroom have bene lighted with colored 1,000-candle power lights and show off the new cars well. The cars shown are three 55's—a sport touring, sport sedan and semi-sport touring and a 75 speedster model. According to Farweil P. Hull, one of the heads of the firm, the upkeep of all Haynes cars on record last year averaged only $7.60. Hull, therefore, asks the question why purchasers don't put a little more money into their original purchase, instead of paying out for upkeep. In the former case the trade-in or sale value is higher. The car is built 95 per cent in the Haynes factories and it contains certain protective devices which are unique to it. When the amount of oil gets so low as to endanger the motor, the flow of gasoline from the mani storage tank to the vacuum tank automatically stops. The electrical system also is protected by an automatic circuit breaker whenever there is a short circuit. These are only a few of many superior features. ESSEX CARS MADE IN ESSEX FACTORY "The principal units in the Essex" SELLING OF USED CARS POOLED Within the next 10 days a new method of handling used cars will be inaugurated by automobile dealers of Orange county. By the establishment of three used car markets to be centrally located in Santa Ana, Anaheim and Fullerton, the prospective buyer of a used car will have an opportunity of making his selection from a list of used cars which he can depend upon to give him a degree of transportation in direct ratio to his investment. The Ford dealers and certain others will maintain independent markets. The cars will be put into first class running condition, sold at standardized prices and handled by a reliable organization. The man who wishes to dispose of his car, either for the purpose of buying another motor car or cashing it's value will have a certain market for it. Arrangements are being made, with assurances of success to advance in cash a part of the valuation of the car immediately upon its acceptance for sale by the management of the used car market. This obviates the necessity of owners selling their automobiles at a big sacrifice to obtain ready money in emergencies. The method of handling used cars in the past has been without parallel in any other line of merchandising. ESSEX CARS MADE IN ESSEX FACTORY "The principal units in the Essex chassis are machined and completed in the Essex factory, according to Townsend & Medbury, Hudson and Essex dealers. "This ensures uniform quality. "The Essex motor with its many patented principles is noted for its wonderful power and its ability to stand up and give years of service. The tax-rating horse-power is but 18.2, yet it actually develops more than 50. Owners do not need its greatest power at all times, of course, but they do want its ability—its excellent performance. The principles of Essex design and construction have been subjected to the test of years of service. The clutch, for example, is of the same type Hudson has used for nearly eleven years. This permanence of design applies throughout the chassis. "Frame, axles, propeller shaft, universal joints, brakes, spring shackles, tapered roller bearings, and all other chassis parts, are of the finest type of design and construction. A careful examination will emphasize these features. "Essex stands for quality, and Essex engineers have concentrated on those things that assure quality. The proof is the endorsement given by many thousands of Essex cars in hands of satisfied owners." Buy Your Electrical Goods of Electrician "You don't go to a blacksmith shop to sell jewelry," says A. Bevillard of the Anaheim Ignition Depot. "why not go to an electrical shop to buy eleterical accessories?" Bevillard has just had his offices repainted and now is taking stock of his electrical accessories. He has an unusually good line, particularly of radio goods and devices, and is adding to it steadily. He has completed an engraving machine to engrave radio panels, which radio owners in the city will find extraordinarily convenient. We Recharge Your Battery In 12 Hrs.
