VALENTINE DAY CUSTOMS ORIGIN RATHER OBSCURE WITH February just outside the door St. Valentine again will be honored at social affairs, as the motif lends itself so charmingly to any occasion. There is no record that St. Valentine was ever inclined to be frivolous or was the patron saint of the comic sentiments typical of the fourteenth day of February. The observance of the day has made its own authority through its customs of passing generations, rather than from any mythical reasons. The Romans held a feast through the month of February in honor of Pan and Juno, although St. Valentine was a bishop of Rome and a martyr. It has been the privilege of Christians to substitute popular customs for the day to their liking. It is likely that St. Valentine's name was substituted to eradicate the name of some pagan deity that the heathen and given to their festivals observed in February. Reliefs of fun," they said. Refreshment seek their mates and it is the custom of young people choosing their valentines through messages either of love, of flowery kind or comic verses. Although this custom is observed less generally in late years than in the past, the gay colors still prevail, but could the decorous saint be able to see some of the missives sent out in his name, he would rest most comfortably. Guild Goes Visiting The indices of St. Michael's Guild were guests yesterday of the Guild of Trinity church, in Orange, several driving over for the afternoon social meeting. Greetings and interchange of ideas for the growth and usefulness of Young Man Gets Surprise A very pleasant surprise party was given last evening in honor of the birthday anniversary of Robert Marsh; at his home on South Los Angeles-st. The young folks enjoyed games of many kinds and had "barrels of fun," they said. Refreshments were served later in the evening. Helping make the evening a memorable one were Robert, Eleanor and Mr. Marsh; Helen Smith, Richard, Harry and Mrs. Dugdate, Mr. and Mrs. Maltyb and sons, David and Robert, Felix Fruch, Irene McMerty and Ruth Donalds. Robert is wondering today who profits more by his annual birthday event, himself or the five and ten cent store. The Salmagundi party which was to have been given by St. Michael's Guild in the Guild hall last evening, was postponed until this evening, hoping for more favorable weather. Eastern Friends Coming Mrs. Parker, 747 North Lemon-st. has had two pleasant surprises this week, one of them Sunday when Prof. and Mrs. Lynn, of Rayland, Ohio, called upon her. The visitors are wintering in Orange at the home of their daughter, Mrs. O. R. Hunter. Their eastern home is about a mile from Mrs. Parker's former residence. She received a message yesterday from Mr. and Mrs. P. R. Nicholson, who are very dear friends, of Dillonvale, Ohio, announcing their contemplated arrival Friday of this week. Mr. Nicholson is an officer in the Dillonvale National Bank, and also is head of a large coal mining concern, with offices in Detroit, Cleveland and Wheeling, W. Va. They will likely remain about two months on this, their third visit to Anaheim in the past three years. NOVEL SCREEN THRILL One of the most novel and thrilling incidents ever shown in a motion picture was introduced in "To Have and To Hold," a Paramount picture produced by George Fitzmaurice, which will be the feature at the California Theatre, Friday and Saturday. This consists of a giant swing on a rope, made by Bert Lytell and Betty Compson, the featured players, 80 feet across, and 50 feet above the deck of a pirate ship on which real guns are booming, while a couple of hundred pirates get busy with seventeenth- century pistols cutlasses and other blood-thirsty impediments. The swing is first made by Mr. Lytell to save Miss Compson from the pirates and the attentions of Theodore Kosloff as Lord Carnal, and then duplicated when he swings back with her to safety. The stunt came off with thrills, eclat and safety—but Mr. Lytell and Miss Compson carefully inspected the rope before starting the hazardous feat.
