U. S. TIRES HAVE UNIQUE TREAD: MANN
The non-skid quality of the United States Royal cord tire is due not only to the form of the tread, says Charley Mann, local Dodge distributor, but to the character of the tire's texture. Mann carries these tires, tubes and repair materials as part of his accessories, and the "U. S." comes as standard equipment on Dodge closed cars, the that's another story.
Whether it is the toughness of texture, its flexibility or what it was discovered after the dire had been made according to specifications, that it possessed a wonderful non-skid quality. A demonstration was conducted in Anaheim long ago in which this fact was shown.
Hardihood, fleerness and comfort are the outstanding features of the "U. S." The tread not only is non-skid, but as frictionless and lively as a tread can be made. The slender, sinewy cords forming the casing make for the greatest possible resistance, just like the strands of steel cable combined. They also make for cheap upkeep and avoidance of the nuisance of punctures and blowouts. U. S. tires are good tires.
Neckitis", Otherwise Star-Gazing, Menace
Have you ever been troubled by "neckitis"? According to word received by officials of the Auto Club of So. Calif., from various western points, motorists have developed some severe cases of "neckitis" as a result of throwing back their heads to gaze upward at funny things to be seen in the sky these nights.
If this complaint become general throut So. Cal. there is no selling what may happen to traffic conditions, say officers of the Club Safety bureau. Hundreds of motorists may be seen out any evening star-gazing for the purpose of viewing Mercury, the star named after the fleet-footed That Summer Strain Nothing To Mac-Dry
Battery prospects, water of new batteries, may ask the question whether the Mac-Dry battery, which has made good so thoroly in the winter month, will do so equally well in the warm weather of summer, says B. F. Herr, local distributor. In answer, Herr points to several well known individuals and concerns that purchased their Mac-Dry early or in the middle of last summer and haven't had any trouble since.
One is the Eastside Grocery, which subjects its cars and equipment to as hard a strain as could be expected. Another is W. H. Schureman, manager of the Anaheim Citrus Fruit Ass'n, who has driven his big Palge over mountains, on dirt roads and in all sorts of places, and never had battery difficulties. The Anaheim Beef Company is another purchaser. It has two of them, purchased last summer. Albert Peters is a fourth. C. B. Goodson, William Hart and Billy Knott are others.
There are 250 Mac-Dry users in the county.
93 OF EACH 100 BATTERIES WILLARDS
Ninety-three out of every 100 batteries that are original equipment on American-made cars are Willard threaded rubber, says A. Bevillard, local distributor.
The new year's record represents one of many annual increases in this percentage. Bevillard show. During 1912 the company sold to manufacturers 26,000 batteries; in 1913 this increased by 270 per cent; 1914, by 23 per cent; 1915, by 140 per cent.
In 1919 82 out of every 100 batteries were Willards, and the percentage up to this year steadily has mounted until it now has reached 93 per cent.
The Willard has been perfected by long years of experimentation and ENNIS EXC AUTO

Olympus, who is paying his fifth visit to this section in the last half century. Mercury has been visible from dark to about 6:00 a.m. at 15 degrees against the horizon to the southwest. Many cases of "neckties" were contracted, according to observers, the other night when the blushing Venus edged up to the moon and staged a kiss with the man therein.
27 MILEAGE OF STUDEBAKER HERE
Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Van Ulear of Stockton; California, were visitors at the Studebaker agency here recently on their way to San Diego in their light six Studebaker roadster. Five gallons of gasoline filled the tank to overflowing, and Van Ulear said they had travelled 137 miles since the tank was filled before—an average of about 27½ miles to the gallon.
They were delighted with weather conditions here, as it had been pretty foggy and cold around the Bay district of late.
Mr. and Mrs. Van Ulear, expect to spend an afternoon with the "ponies" at Tla Juana before returning home.
ALMOST ANY BODY FITS REO CHASSIS
The principal part of a car is the chassis. With a commercial vehicle this is particularly true, says C. W. Cromer, branch manager of Dale & Co., Packard and Reo distributors. There is no better chassis made than that of the Reo speedwagon.
Literally thousands of different types of special body are mounted on this chassis. All sorts of delivery bodies, the ambulance body, hearse, school bus, oil tank, etc. are carried with equal safety and convenience on this chassis.
Sixty thousand of these speedwagons are serving the public all over the country in every line of industry which can divide loads into 2500 pounds or less. Hundreds of concerns own fleets of five to 200 of them. Actual figures have been obtained of 700 speedwagons that have been run from 50,000 to 400,000 miles.

Chevrolet Jumps To 2nd Place In Year
The most discussed automobile on the market is Chevrolet, which in less than a year’s time jumped from seventh to second place in current registrations and promises yet more sensational developments in 1923, says O. E. Dennis of the Fank P. Taggart Co., local distributors.
This car has been on the market about seven years, but not until the fall of 1921 was it regarded at all seriously as a contender for leadership in the low-priced field.
At that time a line of new models was brought out, embodying important engineering improvements, high-grade bodies on all closed models and prices ranging from $525.00 for the touring car to $860.00 for the 5-passenger sedan.
The Chevrolet motor had always enjoyed an excellent reputation, and the added improvement caused a rapid increase in demand that resulted in a shortage of supply that persisted all during 1922, in spite of double shifts and plant enlargements.
Star Coupe, Sedan Are Exhibited Here
Jim Appleby of the Appleby Motor Co., this week received the first of the new Star coupes and sedans.
Here are some of the features: French pleated whipcord upholstery, rattleproof windows, dome light, tubular backbone just like the Durant, sun visor and, for the sedan, four doors. The cars are only 73 inches high.
Wonderful gas mileages are claimed for the touring car, which weighs 1750, and proportionately large mileages for the closed models, which weigh 1875 and 2050.
Any quantity of Stars now are being received.
NEW NASH SIX HAS MANY NEW FEATURES
No other car in the price class of the Nash has a gas tank register as standard equipment, according to the Bob White Company, local Franklin and Nash distributors. This is only one remarkable feature, however, of the new sizes.
Another is the curtain, which fits neatly and are weatherproof. They are made to order for each individual car.
The cowl lamp can be turned on or flashed on, and any quantity of light desired produced.
The steering wheel is one of the handseam procurable, with fine gas and spark levers.
The tonneau light is standard equipment on the five- and seven passenger touring and the sport models.
Other features are the transmission lock, which lowers insurance tools in a case at the doors where they are handled and cushions with an abundance of springs.
LINCOLN OWNER LAUDS LOW UPKEEP
On repairs alone Nick Hugo of Anahdi has spent in two years approximately only $60 on his Lincoln touring, Hugo declared. He is a staunch Lincoln fan. This doesn't include tires of course. Hugo says the car can't be bent on the mountain roads.
The car can be turned in the smallest possible space, it is always under perfect control and can be handled by a child, if necessary.
Hugo has driven his over the roughest possible roads and not over the boulevards, except part of the time.
The only things of importance that has been done is to grind the valves. Adjustment of brakes is free and part of the regular service.
Lincoln service, provided by practically all Ford dealers, means keeping all Lincolns at their top notch of efficiency and not merely in ordinary working order. It makes prevention part of its policy. George Dunton has a Lincoln specialist, who received the training necessary to master the car in every detail.

New assembly and body plants have been built in nine startlegic localities, giving the Chevrolet the largest high-grade closed car capacity in the world.
The practical measure of the remarkable progress of the Chevrolet is told by sales figures for the last two years. In 1920, up to that time the motor industry's best year, Chevrolet marketed 153,646 cars in the year of 1921, sales fell to 71,909 cars. 1922 rolled up the splendid total of 243,000 sales, and production schedules for 1923 are said to be above double the 1922 sales.

DRAIN ROADS TO CENTER
Certain engineers in England are advocating installation of roads which are concave and drain to the center instead of toward the sides, as is usually found under ordinary conditions.
Compressed air apparatus operated from the locomotive has been invented by an Arizona man for quickly unloading lumber cars by releasing their side stakes.
