DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS It is consonant to the whole analogy of our earthly state of trial, that in this, as in other features of God's providence, we should meet with things impossible to understand and difficult to believe, by which reason is baffled and faith tried—acts whose purpose we see not, dispensations whose wisdom is above us, thoughts which are not our thoughts, and ways which are not our ways. In these things we hear, as it were, the same loving voice which spoke to the wondering disciples of old: "What I do, thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter."—Henry L. Mansel. Western civilization would hardly survive another great war. Protect the birdal. One of the very delightful assets of California is its bird-life. Some of those New Year's resolutions already are afflicted with infantile paralysis. Uncle Sam never has earned the reputation of being a trouble-maker in the family of nations. If the Christian world would faithfully conform to the teachings of the Christ, there would be no more great wars. English is a beautiful language, pleasing to the ear when spoken with precision and seasoned with use of simple words. If Europe wants to be saved from political chaos, social disorder and economic ruin, it must do its supreme best to help itself. This is verily the Golden State in its material riches and resources. And RECKLESS SMOKERS ARE FOREST MENACE More than $300,000 in losses in forest fires last year in Los Angeles County are attributed to carelessness of smokers who drop lighted cigars or cigarettes from their autos. County Forester Fintham makes official report to this effect. Total losses, last year, from forest-fires were more than $600,000. This form of carelessness with fire should be invigilated against strongly. It becomes a greater menace as the number of automobiles entering the forest reserves increases. It should be said that the great majority of autoists are conscientiously careful with fire while in the forested areas. But there is a reckless minority and it is the rocklessness of this minority which causes so much material loss to this and other countries of the state. Urgings and warnings should be put before all autoists entering the forest reserves. But autoists are not the only careless ones. Many pedestrians who hike into the mountains and canyons and build camp fires or light matches to cigars or cigarettes are careless and their carelessness starts many a destructive fire. Against recklessness with fire in forest reserves, by any and all vigorous steps should be taken. It may become necessary, in time, to require persons of responsibility and of material means to make good at least part of the loss which their carelessness with fire may cause. SUCCESS IN MARRIAGE IS NOT UNCOMMON With all the sneering at marriage, and all the suggestions and insinuations that the institution is a failure, it is gratifying to know that there are many—very many—notably successful and happy marriages. Here in California, celebration of golden wedding anniversaries is not uncommon. Widower Iry Bentley carnation in his label, she must be sober an' have a fast color comple her smokin' at home, hard't say nothin', but can't look wise. English is a beautiful language, pleasing to the ear when spoken with precision and seasoned with use of simple words. If Europe wants to be saved from political chaos, social disorder and economic ruin, it must do its supreme best to help itself. This is verily the Golden State in its material riches and resources. And it is golden, too, in the high quality of its standards in public and private life. It remains for the responsible statesmen of Europe to decide whether they are to feed the people of Europe on the sweetbreads of peace, or on the bitter bread of war. Europe for some time, has been marching toward the abyss of economic political and social ruin. It can be saved from calamity only by right-of-facing and marching away from this abyss. If the white man would treat the Indian as justly and as considerately as he (the white man) insists upon being treated himself, there would be no cause to arraign the paleface for mis-treatment of the red man. Militarism has been Europe's curse for centuries and its noxious fangs are yet at the throat of that continent. Strange how the lessons so recently written in the blood of millions of men and the tears of millions of bereft ones, are so soon forgotten! Newspapers which stress this kind of clean, real news, frequently have long accounts of delightful family reunions in celebration of silver or golden wedding anniversaries. These are indicative of the real situation as to domestic relations here. The great majority of weddings are successful and happy. This truth should be stressed continuously. Marriage is not a failure. It is not even vergging on failure. The institution may be crippled, but not ruined. The best way to maintain its sacredness is to inspire the young to respect it and to hold it sacred. We need never regret the unkind words we do not say. The United States, by the close inter-linking of nations through facilities for rapid travel from one country to another and swift dissemination of international intelligence, has become the world's neighbor. A. Santa Ana Tel. 1877 Union Pacific EDITORIAL NEW YORK, Jan. 25.—The newest custom among New York society divorcees, who have remarried, is the retaining of both husbands' names, separated by a hyphen. It was a bit startling at first, but it has actually become a sufficiently usual practice so that it is accepted without exclamation. We are a city of monologuers, who talk aloud to ourselves on the streets, according to some of our visitors from out of town. No one seems to know the explanation. Certainly solitude hasn't driven us to that mode of expression, as it is said to do to men on the deserts. We are surrounded by people on every side, and above and below us. But we go along the streets, say those who survey us with the eye of a stranger, discussing our ideas, our affairs and our feelings in perfectly audible tones addressed only to ourselves. Maybe it is a natural thing—this kind of talking—and that man reverts to it only when he is in complete solitude where there is no one to hear and criticise or in a crowded city where no one pays any attention to what you do—except some strangers from away. It begins to look as if New York were going to take a big step in wiping out one prevailing sort of injustice. For years some one has pointed out every once in a while, the serious evil of our congested courts, which means that it often takes two whole years to get a decision in a case. There are as many more churches whose notices do not appear. These represent all faiths, Protestant, Catholic, Jewish and many lesser sects. Yet all of them, whatever their differences, represent the common applications of men toward a nobler life, toward realization of their ideals, toward salvation. Never has there been a greater need for the message of religion. Never has there been a larger opportunity for the churches to serve mankind. Every day we have brought home to us the result of the demoralizing agencies at work. There is a disposition to throw off restraint and seek whatever pleasure may appeal, without regard to its cost, without understanding how luxurious it may be to the individual and to society. Old customs lie lightly on young men and women. The old disciplinary measures are losing their effectiveness. The distinction between right and wrong is fading with many members of the rising generation, or it is declared to be of no validity. It is a questioning age. "I don't believe I'll say my prayers any more when I go to bed," John, aged 5, announced to his mother. "Why not, dear?" she asked. "Well, Charles doesn't say any prayers, and I don't see but what he gets along just as well as I do." This situation is both a challenge and an opportunity to the church. Like the school it must take over PARAGRAPHS (By Robert Quillon) Much of Europe's adversity is occasioned by perversity. A good idea isn't worth very much until it is mixed with sweat. Some people are so quarrelsome that they don't even like agreeable weather. This country isn't even able to keep its patriotism up to war-time strength. So live that you'll never wonder which hurts worse, your conscience or your head. Paying for a war is the pleasanter art. Tax collectors don't wear Sam Brownbelt. Raleigh spread his coat for a lady to step on. The modern holds its seat in the car and spreads his feet for a lady to step on. Civilized nations are those that delegate about half of their years to reconstruction. People who chide women for killing their husbands didn't have to live with the husbands. Getting old is just a happy process of forgetting the times you made an ass of yourself. It's fair enough. Prohibition made cost more; but it kills you quicker, and you don't buy so much. Sometimes a whole family's welfare, actual sustenance, even depends upon that decision and had to suffer during its pending. The condition is more or less true all over the country. Finally, a few weeks ago, one man decided that it was time to take some action that would lead to relief, instead of simply saying how terrible it all was. So I. Montefiore Levy, a prominent attorney here, started out to find the relief. He got the public interested thru statements of actual conditions and then formed a committee of representative lawyers and business men to make an investigation of possible means of relief and recommend the most practicable to the state legislature. It is a striking instance of the sort of thing one man can do if he takes enough interest in helping things to go right. A cemetery for dogs exists here, maintained by a group of wealthy women who own dogs which will eventually be buried there or have owned one which already sleeps in this beautiful well-cared for place. Do you remember the days of "The Great Train Robbery" in motion pictures—the picture that cost $400 to make? In spite of the rapidity of progress in the film world, I had forgotten just how great the change has been until "Thirty Years of Motion Picture History" was presented at the Selwyn theatre the other night. The earliest picture which is now available was shown—the inauguration of William McKinley in 1857, and then filmed on up through the days when King Baggott was the screen idol and Mary Pickford was a little girl with fat legs, known as Gladys Smith, to the present day of soft-focus photography, color photography, million dollar spectacles, and latest of all, the teleview. The teleview is a sort of spectroscope, which has been fastened to each seat in the Selwyn theatre, and through which one looks and has a perfect illusion of reality, because the flat surfaces are given a third dimension. Harry Kemp, our picturesque poet, who demonstrated the falsity of the theory that poets are fragile when he started in training as a boxer a few months ago, has added one more active and striking page to his life's story. He has sailed for Spain to engage in bull-fighting. He is going to gather color for a Spanish play while he is there, but the bull fighting is not at all effective. The distinction between right and wrong is fading with many members of the rising generation, or it is declared to be of no validity. It is a questioning age. "I don't believe I'll say my prayers any more when I go to bed," John aged 5, announced to his mother. "Why not, dear?" she asked. "Well, Charles doesn't say any prayers, and I don't see but what he gets along just as well as I do." This situation is both a challenge and an opportunity to the church. Like the school it must take over much training of young people that ought to be done in the home, but that many homes fail to give. It must be prepared to justify its teachings to this modern world; to make religion a real factor in right living; to show the relation of its activities to the life of today. Young men and women—and older ones, too, for that matter—are facing perplexing problems. The church has the great responsibility of proving to them that it can help them solve these problems. It is easy to stand outside and find fault with organized religion. But what is the fault finder doing to help? If the minister is doing what he can to meet the situation, the task is not one that he can accomplish single handed. He needs the co-operation of the whole congregation to make his work effective. A cold and indifferent congregation is about as inspiring and uplifting an influence in the community as a cold boiled potato. If the minister is not living up to his opportunity, then he needs all the more the counsel and energy of those who see the deficiency. Teamwork is what counts. The church constitutes today the greatest reservoir of moral resources in the community. This fact is an appeal of the most authoritative nature to all men and women to give it their earnest and active support. WISE AND WITTY When a man thinks he is abused, he harbors ill-feelings. Criminals are made without effort but to reform them will take all the resources of mankind. Morbid curiosity brings us face to face with an act which we would hesitate to commit ourselves. PANTOMIME by J.H. Smith A LITTLE TALK ON THRIFT By S. W. STRAUSS, President American Society for Thrift Those who practice thrift will never fail entirely; they may not attain the heights, but they never will reach the depths. No one, at the beginning of life, ever expects to fall. The lamp of hope burns brightly in youth. But hope cannot bring success. There must be concrete action along right lines. STRAUSS, President American Society for Thrift Those who practice thrift will never fail entirely; they may not attain the heights, but they never will reach the depths. No one at the beginning of life ever expects to fail. The lamp of hope burns brightly in youth. But hope cannot bring success. There must be concerted action along right lines. Steadily, step by step, the desired ends are attained. Where there is persistent effort with freedom from wrongful methods of conduct and living, there can be no such thing as ultimate failure. And it is because the practices of thrift keep one constantly within the bounds of prudent living, that this plan of life is the best safeguard against failure. In a broad and general way, moral soundness, as well as economic stability, is the inevitable accompaniment of thrift practice.
