EAST PRELIMINARIES AT ARENA FRIDAY Rapid action is expected tomorrow night in preliminaries Manager Billy Darnley has signed up for the weekly box fest. What should be a real bright spot is the set-to between Young Burton of Los Angeles and Babe Orton, Redlands Indian, 130-pounder. Babe and Burton are two of the best audience pleasers around. Tex Jones, lean and lanky, faces Benny Jordan of Redlands, who secured a lucky win last Thursday at Berdoo in what many that was a good draw. It was the real main event at the Gate City club. Another bout that looks promising is the Tony Ross-Tommy Reddy affair. Both are willing mixers. "Snowy" Johnson and Gil Davis, a pair of scrappy bantams, are down for the opener. The principals for the main event and semi-windup are all reported to be in the "pink". The fur sure will fly when these two sprouts, Art Springer and Tobby Montoya clash again. In the semi-windup, Cyclone Midget and Jack Grande also are expected to come thru. BUSINESS GIRLS TO PLAY H. S. FACULTY The business girls gym club had a very enjoyable session last evening at the H. S. The girls have organized a basketball team and will play the faculty team two weeks from last night. The gym team girls are all experienced players and have had practice in the meetings each Wednesday evening. The faculty members were encouraged in their victory over the H. S. Seconds several days ago and are anxious to go again. There was a large crowd put last evening and the girls went thru their regular gymnastic work. LONDOS WINNER IN ROMANOFF MATCH Jim Loncos, Greek heavyweight wrestling champion, defeated Constantine Romanoff in straight falls last night at Hollywood stadium. Londos scored the first in 33 minutes, while the second came in 15. In the preliminaries George Vassell defeated Jack Washburn and Young Williams and Louis Lagini went 20 minutes to a draw. ANAHEIM DEFEATS FULLERTON JASEYS Fullerton J. C. girls came to Anaheim yesterday in an effort to break the chain of local basketball victories. They returned home with the small end of a 30 to 11 score. This frag furnished a good practice scramble for the Anaheim girls who kept up their usual lively stopping and stayed in the lead to the final whistle. Mary Poyet, former Anaheim player, was with the visiting squad and is doing fine work. Anaheim players: Requarth, Hilec, Young, guards; Cook, Adams, centers; Daly, Cordes and Lensing, forwards. S. girls second squad defeated Katella grammar school girls 24 to 17 yesterday on the local court. Katella was in the lead 15 to 4 at the end of the first 15 minutes. The teams changed goals at the middle of the second-third and from then on, Conch Jacques stars began to rally. At the final whistle the score stood 24 to 17. Cuba Carner starred for Katella. This little basketball player will be at Anaheim H. S. next year and will be big help for the midfielder team. Plain Dealer Want Ads Get Results TRACTOR SCHOOL WILL OPEN MONDAY The repairing and adjusting of tractors, as well as their operation, will be taught to Orange-co ranchers Jan. 29-Feb. 3 when one of six tractor schools will be opened by the U. of C. Agricultural Extension Service. E. J. Stirniman, agricultural engineering extension specialist, with three aides will conduct the school. Equipment will include tractor parts, tools, benches, magnets, carburetors, charts etc. Two hours per day will be given to lecture-demonstrations of fuels, carburetor adjustment, magneto and ignition troubles, lubrication, tractor management, etc. Shop work will occupy the other six hours. The later work consists, first, of bench repairing, babbitting and serraping of bearings, valve grinding, soldering and piston ring fitting; secondly, adjusting, trouble shooting and operation of new or overhauled tractors; thirdly, the overhauling of used gas engines and tractors. The purpose of the school is to give as much practice as possible in necessary adjusting and repairing of the tractor; not to make tractor mechanics. Nearly 600 students last year attended 12 of these schools. The daily schedule is: Monday—8 to 10:30 a.m. Complete registration. 10:30 to 12 a.m. Lecture, demonstration. 1 to 2 p.m. lecturing demonstration. 2 to 5 p.m. practice work.
