LOCAL MIT ARTISTS BEFORE L. A. CLUB
Local boxers made good at Los Angeles Saturday night. Manager Billy Darnley, of the Anaheim Athletic Club, had Johnny Nandes and Tex Jones placed on the Lyceum Athletic card and both lads gave a splendid account of themselves.
Nandes was pitted against Kid Edison, a promising youngster of the L. A. Club, and was entitled to the decision but only received a draw for his efforts. Tex Jones was hooked up with Tommy Nelson, who, not so long ago, was considered a classy performer with his mitts. Tex won
ANAHEIM DEFEATS
WILMINGTON'S FAST TALENT SUNDAY 5-3
Anaheim and Pasadena, winning their games yesterday, are still tice for first place in the Double A league. Santa Monica was eliminated from equal rights at the top of the league, losing to El Monte. Pasadena barely nosed out the So. Co. Gas Co. two to one while the local Merchants had little difficulty trimming the fast Wilmington team 5 to 3.
Wilmington had made every effort to upset the locals by ringing in a number of league players including Ping Bodie, Cunningham, Burke, Bolzele and others. Several of them had never before played with Wilmington and there was some question from Anaheim as to Wilmington's right to use them. After winning, Anaheim was no longer interested in the matter.
Harry Hughes pitched another of his famous games for Anaheim, fanning ten men and keeping the harbor men's hits ineffectively scattored.
Doty Bush, with a couple of two-baggers at the right time, and Art Ramage with three safe blows, bolstered the locals' hit column.
Next Sunday Gardena comes to Anaheim for the last scheduled game. If El Monte, which recently held Pasadena to a two to two tie in 12 innings, can't defeat Pasadena next Sunday, the oldtime rivals, Anaheim and the Crown City, will again clash for the league leadership.

Tex Jones was hooked up with Tommy Nelson, who, not so long ago, was considered a classy performer with his mitts. Tex won all the way and when his hand was raised as the winner the house gave the boy quite a hand while Tex responded with his famous, "Jump over the Rope Act" and the top rope at that.
Jones showed fine form and had that left hand of his struck into his opponents face continually. He also rocked Nelson several times with his right hand, sock. Darnley also had Earl Lane, tough Oklahoma, on the bill and he responded by administering the K.O. to Earl Little in the Second round.
In the main event, Ad Rubidoux won over Young Farrell after four fast and furious rounds.

CITRUS ESTIMATE GREATLY EXCEEDED
An increase of 3,233 carloads of citrus fruit is shown in the estimates of managers of associations affiliated with the California Fruit Growers Exchange as of Jan. 1, as compared with the estimate of No. 1, according to a statement just made public. The total estimate for the entire state, including the crops of the independents, is 57,919 carloads. This is only 2,228 carloads less than the bumper year 1920-21. Of the total 11,268 carloads will be lenions, the rest oranges and grapefruit. The unusual sizing of the fruit is responsible for the larger estimate for the most part. Fifty per cent of the navel crop will consist of 126's and larger.
Sometimes one suspects that it wasn't England the Irish hated so much as authority.

DISTINGUISHED L. A. CIVIL ENGINEER ADDRESSES FULLERTON J. C. OIL CLASS
(By Alexander Anderson)
Ernest G. Hamilton, civil engineer, Los Angeles, spoke to the oil production class and visitors at Fullerton J. C. last week on topographic surveying. The speaker who was in the service of the topographic branch, U. S. Geological Survey, 15 years, is now employed by the City of Los Angeles.
Mr. Hamilton described the mech used in the early days, 30 years ago. Great areas of the west had never been surveyed and information was required about the course of the rivers and the position of mountains and lakes to enable atlas sheets of our country to be filled in.
Single topographers were sent out with a cook and pack train. These alone workers occupied stations on mountain tops and stretched the features of the land, mapping and triangulating an area of 1,200 square miles or thereabouts in a single season.
The maps produced in this way bear the word "reconnaissance" printed at the top of the sheet and do not pretend to be very accurate, but they have been of great value.
With the growing population and improvement of the country, the personnel of the survey parties and the accuracy and detail of the topographic mapping has been increased.
Mr. Hamilton referred to experience in mapping nuder difficulties in the Katalla oil region of Alaska. Constant high winds are a feature of the district and while he was there the government wind gauge registered 128 miles per hour and was then blown away. It looks as though steel derricks will become popular at Katalla, where there is a small oil field and a refinery.
In Western Pennsylvania a geologist declared that Mr. Hamilton's party must have made an error in their map because his geology did not fit the sheet. The topographers refused to admit the geologist's argument and the geologist afterwards found a fault in the rocks that explained everything satisfactorily.
Work in the forests of Oregon and in the swamps of Louisiana was very tedious owing to the many impediments to travel and the impossibility of seeing more than few feet ahead. Under such circumstances special methods were used. An accurate
Eiker was high gun of the match with 569 pins plus Meek shot 549 which was the best his team could show.
The final block will be shot on the El Dorada Alleys next Sunday night.

BLIND IN PARLIMENT
LONDON, Jan. 22.—There is one blind man among the newly-installed members of the British parliament. He is Frederick Martin, Liberal member for East Aberdeenshire. Mr. Martin is blind as the result of his war experiences, yet he is able to do most things, including the following of his favorite habit of fishing, as though his sight were unimpaired. He is the third blind man to sit in parliament during the past 50 years.

A. S. Bradford, president of the First National Bank of Placentia, was one of the guests and speakers at the 11th annual banquet of the employees of the So. Co. Gas Co. at the Alexandria Hotel Saturday night. Several officials attended from Orange-co. L. A. West, former district attorney of the county, also attended The banquet was given by President F. R. Bain and more than 100 attended. Starting with 3300 consumers in 1911, the company had more than 100,000 at the close of 1922, President Bain said in his speech. In the past calendar year more than 12,000,000,000 cubic feet of gas was sold, an increase of 39.2 per cent over 1921.

Santa Ana, mecca for young folks eager to marry in a hurry without interference, all the way from San Diego to Bakersfield, will be a mecca no longer if a measure framed by Will D. Gould, well known attorney, is passed at this session of the legislature. Gould would require publication of intent to marry 30 days before the marriage takes place. An affidavit of such publication from an executive of the paper would have to be presented to obtain the license. To marry persons without a license so obtained would be a misdemeanor.
SALVATION ARMY
INCORPORATES
Articles of incorporation of the Salvation Army were filed today with the County Clerk. The incorporation covers California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and the Hawaiian Islands. The term of incorporation is 50 years. Five directors are named—George Wood of San Francisco, M. Louise Coggeshall of Los Angeles, William J. Dart of South Pasadena, and Thomas Estill and Fletscher Agnow, both of Chicago.
When the helper came to the end of the rope, he marked his position by blazing a tree with a hatchet and then yelled. The topographer aimed his plane table sight in the direction of his assistant's voice.
Traverse run in this way were not extremely accurate, but by carrying lines of this kind along the main streets, noting the points where tributaries joined them, and then running similar lines along the crests of the ridges, a close approximation to the drainage was obtained. Elevations were recorded from aneroid barometer readings during the work.
Realizing the many civic and economic user of an accurate up-to-date contoured map, supervisors of Los Angeles-co have voted a special appropriation towards the cost of a large-scale contoured map of all arabs land, residential sections and oil lands of the county.
Three month ago four parties of U. S. Geological Survey topographers commenced this survey between Santa Monica and Redondo and are working east. The contour interval is five feet and the scale is 2,000 feet to the inch, or say two and six tenths inches to the mile.
It will take about three years to complete the whole map; which will be published in Washington, but sections of it will be available soon after the field work on each is finished.
Information concerning completed sections may be obtained from U. S. Geological Survey Office, Sacramento.
In Mr. Hamilton's opinion this work constitutes the most comprehensive series of topographic map sheets, both in regard to area, scale and detail, that the U. S. G. S. topographers have so far undertaken.
Los Angeles-co will benefit materially through having an accurate large scale map available for the study of flood-control, irrigation, reclamation, city planning, city development and sewage schemes. The map will also greatly facilitate the search for oil and artesian water. It will be useful to real estate men and will be used extensively for man-made national fame, who have seen Mr. Fairbanks' work," Douglas Fairbanks in Robin Hood," a United Artists release now showing at the Fairyland Theatre, was Brutus Hamilton, considerate dhe best-all-around track and field man in America and who distinguished himself as captain of the track team of the Univ. Of Mo."
"Bob" Simpson, holder of the 220-yard low hurdles record, was also among the late guests. Kranzlien, co-holders of the 110-meter high hurdles and numerous indoor records, also participated in these "impromptu events."
One of the very last acts of Jack Dempsey, champion heavyweight, before departing for Europe, was to go far out of his way to call on Mr. Fairbanks for a farewell sparring match.
