The Plain Dealer P CLASSY MAIN BOUT ASSURED FANS AT ARENA FRIDAY EVE As classy main event as Vernon or Hollywood could put on is the feature tomorrow night at the local arena. Never has such keen interest been manifested in a boxing contest in Anaheim as in the Frank Barrieau Sailor Steve Bliss affair. The local club management is giving fans a touch of real class in bringing together two such performers. Both boys are clever, hard-hitting fighters and know the game from A to Z. Barrieau was over yesterday and worked out at the Arena. He boxed nine rounds, three with Young Terry, three with Johnny Nandes and wound up by going three more brisk ones with his old friend and clubmate, Billy Darnley. Both said it sure felt like cold times to swat each other with the pillows as they used to do. It has been just nine years since Bill and Frank had the gloves on with one another and their three-round tilt was spirited at that for a couple of friends. Barrieau shows plainly that he is in excellent condition and his boxing is of the "rare form" brand. Bless reports that he, too, is in fine trim and that he expects to make the French-Canuck, step fast all the way. Tobby Montaya, Placentia's little whirlwind, who is fast taking honors, that formerly belonged to Kid Louie, is in the best shape of his brief but metorio career and says that Art Springer, the crack Los Angeles Banty, had better be in the same good condition. Tough, rough Earl Lane, Oklahoma City, welterweight, and Art Jackson, a newcomer to these parts who is said to be the real goods, are also expected to come thru with a real live one as should also Tommy Roddy and Tony Ross, a couple of hardy 128-pounders who love the tough going. Charley Dement and Johnny Nandes, 125-foot mitt art. ANAHEIM GIRLS AT HUNTINGTON BEACH Anaheim Hi girls basketball team and Coach Jacques went to Huntington Beach this afternoon. The Beach squad is considered easy but local girls were ready to tackle them hard if they sprang a surprise. After the game they planned a wienie bake and good time. PUNK DECISION AT DELHI RE-OPENING A couple of K. O.'s, two draws and two decisions (one an exceedingly punk one) featured the reopening of the Delhi boxing show last night. Oh, yes, there were substitutes in both feature bouts. Joe Grim, Phoenix welterweight, taking Jack Martin's place in the main event, gave away at least ten pounds, but beat Gatton only to have the referee call it "even steven." Gatten put up a good fight at that, but Grimm was always a punch or two to the good. In the semi-windup, Jimmy Kramer of Los Angeles, taking Fred Allison's place against Jack Bunn of Huntington Beach, was lucky to draw. After almost knocking his man for a goal in the first round, Jimmy "blew up" and his hanging on tactics did not meet approval. Battling Doty won over Kid Tex of Los Angeles after a hard tussle of four rounds as did Young Monroe of Los Angeles against Tommy Aguire of Huntington Beach. Jack McClelland, also of the beach town, had to quit in his mixup with Young Murphy of Los Angeles in the third round, claiming a broken hand. Benny Diaz, of Los Angeles, stopped Harry Williams in the second round via the K. O. route. Chick Brown referred and his decisions were all good with the exception of the Gatten-Grimm affair. A good crowd was present. YOUNG TERM FIGHT Young Terry, from Whittier and former at the local clone Midgett, of at the San Bernardino Indian, mixes with of Phoenix in the seattle Other boys Darnle are Tex Jones, who Benny Jordan of Dement, who tackles and Louie Barney, with Gil Davis of Sheller and Cyclone on the bill. It looks like some easy money ahead for Jack. He has offers to fight Gibbons, Wills and Beckett. Dempsey could probably lick all thru in one evening, but by stringing them out about four months apart he can gather much more coin of the good old U.S.A. Babe Ruth had a pimple picked, thereby getting into the papers as having an operation. Carpentier, whose luster as a puglist is dimming, is aching for a comeback. Carp, like most of those who have gone before, is passing from his ring career hard. He imagines he can mop up half of France with Ski, the black who knocked him out, and then told the world that he (Siki) double crossed Carp in a fixed fight. Carp is sore and may be able to pulverize the black man but what will he have accomplished? Nothing. There can result no honor. Nothing but the mixing in a petty grudge fight. Carp had better retire to private life as is, rather than dabble in the mud and expect to come clean. COMB STATI MURDER LOS ANGELES, barrier of officials at the Mexican box search was in progress. M. Other boys Darnley is taking over are Tex Jones, who hooks up with Benny Jordan of Redlands; Charley Dement, who tackles Young Hererra, and Loule Barney, who has a return with Gil Dayls of Berdoo. Young Shelter and Cyclone Johnson are also on the bill. CHANGE IN ORANGE TENNIS SCHEDULE Orange-co tennis league will play an entirely new schedule this year. The teams will compose five boys and five girls. There will be the first, second, third and fourth boys and girls singles. The first and second singles will constitute doubles and third and fourth singles, second doubles. The fifth member each team will form the mixed doubles. Only one point will be given each play, making 13 points to the game. Each match is given the same credit as the other matches. There will be six teams in the league — Anaheim, Orange, Santa Ana, Fullerton, Whittier and Tustin. The coaches of the county also found it necessary to have a freshmen team. The underclassmen will play Mondays and the first team Wednesday. The matches will be played on opposite grounds. Anaheim Hi has a better chance this year than ever before. Lorena Polier, last year's star, is out of the race this year. She failed to take the examination at the close of last year's semester which makes her ineligible to play. She will be greatly missed this season. CHORAL OFFERING, “BOHEMIAN GIRL”, CREDIT TO COUNTY With ears still resounding to Baile's lovely harmonies, with eyes still visioning the artistically conceived stage settings, and with that one "touch of nature which makes the world akin," Anaheim was today offering tribute to the Orange-co Choral union, to its director, Ellis Rhodes, and to its members who last night at the high school auditorium presented the supreme musical event of the season, "The Bohemian Girl." Light operas have been given by the choral union—given in a manner that reflected glory upon both organization and director. A list of such successes, "The Mikado," "Pirates of Penzance," 'H.M.S. Pinafore' with never a failure, was ample preparation for so ambitious an offering as "The Bohemian Girl." The scenic effect was masterly—pine-crowned slopes fading into the distance with unusually beautiful lighting effects, offered romantic setting for Romance's very own children, the gypsy folk. What a tiny, fairy-like Arline was small Ardamae Miles, 3-year-old daughter of Raymond Miles, the "Thaddeus" of the play. What a brave part she played amid the wild scenes, the shooting, the noise and excitement attendant upon her kidnapping by "Devilshoof," the gypsy—Robert Brown! It was in the first act that four of the principals made their appearance, Brown, Miles, Maurice Phillips and Fred Wilde. It remained for Fred Wilde to distinguish a lesser role by some of the most clearly consistent acting ever seen on the local stage. As "Florestein," ne'er-do-well nephew of the Count of Arnhelm, he bought to his part an understanding of values, and a restrained fire that lifted it to pre-eminence even amid of pantomime without one spoken word or one jbar of song, which Brown presented in the final act. Alone on the stage, he held the breathless attention of the audience merely by his really inspired acting. No loveller or daintier bit of acting was ever seen in this city than the scene between "Thaddeus" and "Arline" in the second act. "Arline" was all that fancy painted her, an example of sweet and wholesome girlhood. Never could a loveller one be chosen than Marjorie Warner, whose silvery voice rang crystal clear in the solo, "I Dreamt That I Dwelt in Marble Halls." league — Anaheim, Orange, Santa Ana, Fullerton, Whittier and Tustin. The coaches of the county also found it necessary to have a freshmen team. The underclassmen will play Mondays and the first team Wednesday. The matches will be played on opposite grounds. Anaheim Hi has a better chance this year than ever before. Lorena Polrier, last year's star, is out of the race this year. She failed to take the examination at the close of last year's semester which makes her ineligible to play. She will be greatly missed this season. Miss Polrier was sure to have been one of Anaheim's point winners. Coaches Jacques and Elliott have drilled their teams hard and have guaranteed a good showing in the league. The Orange league starts the last Friday in February. COMB STATE IN MURDER SEARCH LOS ANGELES, Jan. 18.—With a barrier of officials watching for him at the Mexican border, a state-wide search was in progress today for Leo M. Williford, ex-service man and adventurer, who is charged with the murder of William S. Fisher, private detective and police informer, shot down Tuesday morning. Mrs. Alice J. Williford, 31, of 737 East Adams-st, wife of the fugitive, is being held by the police as a material witness in the case, and a charge of murder has also been brought against R. C. Springer, arrested yesterday as the owner of the "murder car" used by Fisher's slayer.
