AUTOMOBILE SECTION VOL. XXVI—NO. 127 FEB. 25TH SET FOR L.A. RACE LOS ANGELES Jan. 13.—An announcement from the offices of the Los Angeles Speedway Association that the coming championship race on the Beverly Hills mile and a quarter oval will be held Feb. 25 is calculated to thrill the sport-loving and motoring public of Southern California. The news comes from A. M. Young secretary-manager of the speedway. The distance is set for 250 miles, and the race expected to furnish the fastest and the cleanest sport yet, despite the admirable records hung up in the last race on the local track Dec. 3. Young announced coincidentally that this race would be the last one that fans would get to see until the annual Thanksgiving Day championship classic rolls around later in the year. Because of the fact that for some time past, it has been the custom to satisfy the fan's craving for more speed with sprint races following the major program, the announcement was made simultaneously as the opening date is set. The last 250-mile race is still the cause of comment over the dinner- AUDEON BULB IS ON DISPLAY HERE Yes, Friends, there is no doubt that the most wonderful piece of apparatus ever invented is here in Anaheim. In fact you can see once for yourself. A. Bevillard or his radio expert, John Saunders, will let you see it and explain its action very willingly. You don't have to take their word for it entirely. This wonder-glass tube, for that's what it is, not any larger than an ordinary electric light bulb and about the same weight, will transmit signals, both voice and code thousands of miles where they can be received by the same kind of a bulb. It is capable of guiding the largest ship in the harbor under all conditions of fog or storm. In fact the helmmen may be totally blind, but if he can hear this wonderful bulb will bring the ship safely into port. It will detect the smallest amount of energy and will increase this energy until it is strong enough to be heard. Steinmetz, the leading electrical engineer of this country, when asked if it were possible to communicate with other worlds said, "If it is, it will be done by the Audion Bulb." Look Bevillard up and let him show you. Ford Car Stands Extraordinary Abuse BUILDING ROAD ACTI The detour at La San Diego is elimi local branch of the Cal. announced, foll celled this morning. The Ford isn’t a show car, a boulevard car, but a car for service the year round and in all sorts of weather. “Watch the Ford and the way it is treated, particularly if it isn’t new. The care and protection given a car seems in fact to be proportioned to the price paid. “When we talk about upkeep, we mean also cost of gas and oil. AIN DEALING NEWSPAPER OF NORTHERN ORANGE COUNTY Anaheim, California, Saturday, Jan. 13, 1923 BUILDING OF ROADS IS ACTIVE The detour at La Jolla en route to San Diego is eliminated today, the local branch of the Auto Club of So. Cal. announced, following a wire received this morning. The Mill Creek road has been closed, says a dispatch today from Redlands, and crews are at work on the new macadam pavement from the mouth of the Santa Ana river to the Mountain Home road, four miles. Several of the curves have been widened. County Engineer J. L. McBride has received instructions from Supervisor William E. Schumacher to grade and gravel South-st and Placentia-ave to the city limits of Anaheim. The work will be started early next week. Rio Vista street from Wagner-rd to the Anaheim-Olive road will be gravelled probably within 10 days. Cerritos-ave for a mile or so from Garden Grove-rd cast to Nurseny-ave is being widened to 40 feet and graded. This section of Cerritos or Sugar-ave like the rest of it had always been merely a narrow lane. FRANKLIN SEDAN USED TEN YEARS The first Franklin stock sedan has been in 10 years continuous service and is still running smoothly, according to Bob White, Nash and Franklin distributor. It was used practically all of this time by G. A. Robertson of Dallas, Texas, who sold it to S. A. Leake, a prominent attorney. Factory officials point out that the sedan has long been the most widely sold model in the Franklin line, and that it alone forms 37 per cent of the entire Franklin output. No other manufacturer, so far as is known, turns out such a large proportion of sedans. The public had to be educated to the advantages of a light, flexible, all-year-found car suitable for town or country use, on rough roads or smooth, and in the beginning it was a slow process. The first year only 32 Franklin sedans—there were no other makes on the market—were sold. The number sold, however, increased rapidly year after year and at the present time more than 12,000 Franklin sedans are in active service. The eating of the pudding is the proof of it, and it is certainly a lot of pleasure to sell a car that creates the enthusiasm in an owner as a Jordan does. You can't just put a racing saddle on a farm horse and put him in the derby. You must have that little touch of something between the bit and the bumper which makes you feel like starting from Cedar Rapids directly for London, England or Paris, France. 1922 THEFTS OF AUTOS JUMP A comprehensive report of auto thefts for the past year just issued by the theft bureau of the Auto Club of So. Calif., shows that year by year there are more cars being stolen than during the year previous. In this part of the state during 1922 there were nearly $3,000,000 worth of automobiles taken by thief gangs. It is believed by detectives of the Auto Club that this tremendous activity is conducted by professional groups of thieves organized on a commercial basis, alto a certain per cent of the cars are taken for joyriding purposes. There were 2788 machines stolen in Los Angeles alone during 1922 as compared to 2572 taken in 1921. An investigation of the facts relating to the theft of each automobile shows that in most instances the car was stolen because the owner failed to lock it or even left the keys in the lock. Such carelessness as this encourages the stealing of machines throughout the state, say the authorities. 350 APPLY HERE FOR 1922 LICENSES You can't just put a racing saddle on a farm horse and put him in the derby. They are all made up and ready to be used soon after Feb. 1. Instead of having the numbers all in an unbroken row, as they were during 1922, they will be divided in the center this year so that they can be more readily discerned at a hazy glance. The numerals will be white on a black background, which makes them stand out very clearly. The division will be made by the name of the state and the numeral of the year — "23." Officials of the Automobile Club of Southern California in all the branch offices of the organization report an unprecedented rush for applications during the first week of this year. At the Anaheim office approximately 350 have applied.
