DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS
Every known piece of rebellion against Christ will shatter all true enjoyment of His favor, unless we are hopeless hypocrite or self-deceived.—Alexander Maclaren.
Honesty is the keystone of the arch of chief virtues.
Colonial Roosevelt is fondly and vividly remembered by his countrymen.
This should be made a year of industrial peace and prosperity throut the country.
The trouble with many persons is that their consciences are afflicted with sleeping sickness.
Many a New Year's resolution already has been put away into a nameless and forgotten grave.
The California Legislature has organized well and is in position to accomplish a great deal of good work.
Fair weather does not test friends. It is the storms of adversity that prove the steadfastness or the insubstantiality of friendships.
They are conquering the Sahara Desert with the automobile. The automobile is the advance courier of our Western civilization.
Providence gave California literally "a place in the sun." and in the sunshine this state basks for a great majority of the days of the year.
For reckless speeding there should be punishment sufficiently severe to be felt keenly and to deter from repetition of the dangerous offense.
If the appalling experiences of the last ten years do not incline Europe to break away from militarism and to foster permanent justice what Europe has had its terrifying object-less lesson—it is having object-less all the time—in the utter destructiveness of pursuing the ancient way—the way of international and inter-racial grudges, suspicions and selfish ambitions. Lack of unity, absence of co-operation among the great powers of Europe—the spirit of every nation or people for itself "and the deyil take the hindmost"—these things, in time if persisted in, would bring Europe to the very brink of ruin and plunge it over the brink.
In the desperateness of the existing situation over there, there should be sufficient incentive for the countries which are so racked by the intolerable status of strife, suspicion and lack of team-work, to throw off the old order of things, to bring about an honest, straight-forward state of harmony, and to insure peace and wholesome progress by uniting, in justice and equity and good will, for the good of each and every country in Europe. This unifying could not be perfected at once. But it could be and it should be launched immediately, so that its benefits might begin to fructify.
LOS ANGELES IN FIGHT AGAINST CRIME
Influential citizens of Los Angeles, including the publishers and editors of the five Los Angeles newspapers, have met and inaugurated a campaign to suppress the startling prevalence of serious crimes in that city. An investigation is to be made at once by a committee of prominent citizens, under auspices of the Community Development Association, and ways and means to remedy whatever defects they find in policing or in court procedure will be instituted.

For reckless speeding there should be punishment sufficiently severe to be felt keenly and to deter from repetition of the dangerous offense.
If the appalling experiences of the last ten years do not incline Europe to break away from militarism and to foster permanent, just peace, what, under heaven, would go so?
A cheerful philosophy of life and a disposition to aid others and make others happy, put sugar into life and extract the vinegar and gall from existence.
The sooner scientific control of floods is instituted in this country, the sooner will scores of lives and property worth tens of millions of dollars be saved annually.
The automobile has become an integral part of modern life—a convenience indispensable, a luxury delightful; a source of almost limitless usefulness and pleasure.
California should not be divided, either geographically or sentimentally. As one great, undivided, unified commonwealth it should move forward to greatness and glory.
This and other cities in Los Angeles County and in the Southland will follow with interest this movement to bring to halt a reign of criminality in Los Angeles that is appaling and that is growing worse from day to day. Every means and resource should be employed to drive the criminal element out of Los Angeles or to apprehend desperate criminals and send them to prison. For outside cities suffer, when outlaws find safe lodgement in Los Angeles and sally forth from there to commit crimes in this city and other cities and towns of this section and then scurry back into hiding in the larger city.
California's development is not for today and tomorrow only, but for all time. This state does not take one step forward and two steps backward.
The force never appreciates an executive until he is out of town and somebody else has to entertain the loafers.

LURE
Boston man goes to prison for stealing $300,000 at the age of 79. Previously, thru his long life, he had risen to a high business position of trust and a comfortable state of prosperity.
In one stroke he undoes a lifetime of effort.
You wonder why a man of 79 suddenly desired great riches. Too old to enjoy wealth. Only a few years left for him on earth.
The answer is an old one: Most of us never know when we have enough.

GEOLOGY AND POLITICS
Fresno Republican
A geologic fact, determined aeon ago, affects the happiness of millions of men today. The fact that a spill of land occurred in one direction rather than another, that rock of a certain thickness or hardness occurred at a certain point rather than a hundred miles away means the difference between the sea and human happiness or human misery.
Some men say that there is no such thing as "accident." And yet here is an accident. It is an accident to the people of the Balkans and to the people of Asia Minor that the straits that separate them are but a few miles wide instead of a hundred miles wide. But this difference between ten and a hundred miles is the difference between the political security of peoples and the continual terror in homes and in families throughout many hundreds of miles. It has meant the location of Byzantium, the building of Constantinople, the dominance of Stamford.
Had Thrace and Anatolia been as far apart as are Italy and Africa even as near together as are Britain and France, their political fate would have been much different. The political problem that lingered Pasha is discussing with the Allies at Lausanne would never have been raised, would have been easy of solution.
As it is, the Turks can think of each side of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles as touching each other for the Turks to step across. While the world powers can think of the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles as separating Europe and Asia, and giving access for the untrammeled trade of the world to enter the Black Sea.

Once in a while you meet a very good man who can talk about something other than his own goodness.

A domestic science course will teach a girl to cook almost all the things a man doesn't care for.

From "A Spruce Little Old Gentleman from the East"
Just want to tell you about something that happened to me. I am still able to do a few chores about home, such as going to the mail box, and sometimes to the store a few blocks away, and I carry a small canvas bag over my shoulders in which to carry groceries, etc.
The other day on my return from the store, I was accosted by a little boy, a new one in our neighborhood.
"Are you the mail man?" he asked.
"No, Johnnie. You have another guess coming. I am not the mail man."
"Well, are you the grocery man?"
"No." said I; "you still have a guess coming."
"Ah, I know you now," he smiled.
"You are the garbage man!"

Still, there is, after a fashion, a sort of an excuse that can be found for the presence of 500 dope peddlers in Los Angeles. If you had to put up with the climate and the tourists that Los Angeles does, you too might turn to dope for relief.—From the Cleveland Press.

The political problem that Islam Paaha is discussing with the Allies at Lausanne would never have been raised, or raised, would have been easy of solution.

The waterway between southern Russia and the Mediterranean is not much wider than the Panama Canal. But it is a natural waterway. It is an accident of ages ago, instead of being constructed by man.
New wars may be fought over this geologic difference, if differences like that as Lausanne cannot be made a means of peace.
There is an enterprising real estate dealer in one of our Long Island suburbs, whose physiology doesn't seem to match his enterprise. Te me there is a discouragingly warning note in his newly erected sign: "Lots for sale; life insurance policy with At last our projected National Theatre is to become a reality. Articles of incorporation have been filled for it by Nicholas Murray Butter of Columbia University. David Belasco, playwright, producer and manager; Otto H. Kahn, Loeb & Co., Lee Shubert, Augustus Thomas and Whitney Warren, the architect. In addition to the incorporators, we are also directors, there are named thirty-four others prominent in theatrical and educational lines. One of the objects of the theatre will be to encourage the amateurs throughout the country and co-ordinate these dramatic clubs. These, it is said, will have the use of one or two Broadway successes in a season so that those plays may be seen in smaller cities without having to wait years for them or until they are putin' the movies.

CAN'T DO THE WORK
It's too much to try to work every day against a constant dull backache, or sudden darting pain in the small of the back. Be rid of it. Try Doan's Kidney Pills. Your neighbors recommend them.
Mrs. S. B. Kraemer, 238 N. Lemon St., Anaheim, says: "An operation weakened my kidneys and about two years ago I began to suffer from pains across the small of my back. My right kidney felt as though it were swollen and ached dreadfully. I had dull, dizzy headaches, too. My housework was often neglected, I was so run down and my kidneys didn't act right, until I read of Doan's Kidney Pills and used them. I got Doan's at Heying's Pharmacy. They cured me of all signs of the trouble. The backaches left and my kidneys were regulated."
Price 60c at all dealers. Don't simply ask for a kidney remedy—get Doan's Kidney Pills—the same that Mrs. Kraemer had. Foster-Millburn Co., Mfrs., Buffalo, N.Y.
