Honesty is the keystone of the arch of chief virtues. Colonial Roosevelt is fondly and vividly remembered by his countrymen. This should be made a year of industrial peace and prosperity throut the country. The trouble with many persons is that their consciences are afflicted with sleeping sickness. Many a New Year's resolution already has been put away into a nameless and forgotten grave. The California Legislature has organized well and is in position to accomplish a great deal of good work. Fair weather does not test friends. It is the storms of adversity that prove the steadfastness or the insubstantiality of friendships. They are conquering the Sahara Desert with the automobile. The automobile is the advance courier of our Western civilization. Providence gave California literally "a place in the sun." and in the sunshine this state basks for a great majority of the days of the year. For reckless speeding there should be punishment sufficiently severe to be felt keenly and to deter from repetition of the dangerous offense. If the appalling experiences of the last ten years do not incline Europe to break away from militarism and to foster permanent justice what Europe has had its terrifying object-less lesson—it is having object-less all the time—in the utter destructiveness of pursuing the ancient way—the way of international and inter-racial grudges, suspicions and selfish ambitions. Lack of unity, absence of co-operation among the great powers of Europe—the spirit of every nation or people for itself "and the deyil take the hindmost"—these things, in time if persisted in, would bring Europe to the very brink of ruin and plunge it over the brink. In the desperateness of the existing situation over there, there should be sufficient incentive for the countries which are so racked by the intolerable status of strife, suspicion and lack of team-work, to throw off the old order of things, to bring about an honest, straight-forward state of harmony, and to insure peace and wholesome progress by uniting, in justice and equity and good will, for the good of each and every country in Europe. This unifying could not be perfected at once. But it could be and it should be launched immediately, so that its benefits might begin to fructify. LOS ANGELES IN FIGHT AGAINST CRIME Influential citizens of Los Angeles, including the publishers and editors of the five Los Angeles newspapers, have met and inaugurated a campaign to suppress the startling prevalence of serious crimes in that city. An investigation is to be made at once by a committee of prominent citizens, under auspices of the Community Development Association, and ways and means to remedy whatever defects they find in policing or in court procedure will be instituted. This and other cities in Los Angeles County and in the Southland... Providence gave California literally "a place in the sun," and in the sunshine this state basks for a great majority of the days of the year. The automobile has become an integral part of modern life—a convenience indispensable, a luxury delightful; a source of almost limitless usefulness and pleasure. California should not be divided, either geographically or sentimentally. As one great, undivided, unified commonwealth it should move forward to greatness and glory. For outside cities suffer, when outlaws find safe lodgement in Los Angeles and sally forth from there to commit crimes in this city and other cities and towns of this section and then scurry back into hiding in the larger city. California's development is not for today and tomorrow only, but for all time. This state does not take one step forward and two steps backward.
