WHEN THRU WITH YOUR PLAIN DEALER, MAIL IT TO EASTERN FRIENDS—IT MAY BRING THEM TO ANAHEIM, FASTEST GROWING CITY IN ORANGE COUNTY. VOL. XXVI—NO. 120 FROG WORST MENACE TO PLUNGE City Council Given Pointers on Construction of Swimming Pool Know Ye what constitutes the greatest drawback to a swimming pool such as Anaheim will soon have in the city park? It's nothing more nor less than bull frogs, common to the "ole swimmin hole" since the dawn of history. This was the information given city council last night by Hans Madlener, swimming expert, in an earnest warning against some common mistakes in construction of public plunges. Madlener has had a plunge on his ranch about three miles south of Anaheim, the fifth house west of the Log Cabin fruit stand on Orangewood-ave., for 17 years. Madlener has not only entertained the best swimmers in So. Cal. but from other parts of the world, including the champion swimmer of Australia: "I have had to rebuild my plunge not once but twice to correct mistakes." Take the frogs, for instance, though Czecho Official Target of Assassin PRAGUE, Jan. 5.—An unsuccessful attempt was made here today to assassinate Minister of Finance Räschlin of the Czecho-Slovak cabinet. Dr. Räschlin was leaving his home when a young Bohemian who had been lying in wait fired three shots with a revolver. The minister was wounded but escaped death. The Bohemian was arrested and gave the name of Schobal. He said he was an employee of the Bank of Bohemia. NEED FUNDS FOR LEVEE BRUSH News that the Bear Valley dam is now at the crest and that further rainfall will carry millions of gallons of flood waters down the Santa Ana river, should further flood conditions prevail, does not daunt in the least the courageous spirits of Fritz Yungbluth, Secretary Dlerker, Charlie Hollingshead, John Cook, Joe Carroil and a score of others interested in the curbing of that famous stream. Madlener has had a plunge on his ranch about three miles south of Anaheim, the fifth house west of the Log Cabin fruit stand on Orangewood-ave., for 17 years. Madlener has not only entertained the best swimmers in So. Cal. but from other parts of the world, including the champion swimmer of Australia. "I have had to rebuild my plunge not once but twice to correct mistakes." "Take the frogs, for instance. They're an awful nuisance, though the solution is really very simple. They made so much noise that neighbors complained their skimbers were disturbed. I could hear them when I passed Ball-rd. on my return from Anaheim. You might think they were easy to catch but not so. I used to grab 80 to 100 early in the morning, when they were not so agile after singing all night, and think I had the pool entirely cleaned out, but the following night they would be going as strong as ever. Their orchestra attracted every frog from miles around. "The real solution was this--build a wall about a foot high around the pool and the bull frogs, despite their records for standing high jump, can't get over." Here are some more suggestions and warnings given by Mr. Madlener: "It is very important that there be a system for healing the water. The patronage will be increased two or three times if this is done. A boller for such purposes costs $1500 and oil is used for fuel. The system will pay for itself in one season. At Pasadena where the water is heated, patrons are attracted from nearby cities with unheated plunges. The more patronage, the more revenue. You might as well make it right while you are about it. Scientists agree that swimming is the finest body developer and most healthful of any sport, due to the action of the water on the body while so many muscles are being exercised. "You should buy cotton bathing suits for men and woolen suits for women, because wool is warmer." There should be a laundry room with wringers so that bathing suits and towels can be dried immediately. If allowed to stay wet, they soon rot, greatly increasing the expense. "There should be a fence around the pool to prevent bathers wandering away, getting their feet muddy and returning to discolor the water." There should be a few seats for on-lookers. "There should be a rest room for women, necessary toilers for everyone, adequate lockers, though it is not necessary to have individual dressing rooms for boys under 14 if each is provided with a hook or pigeon-hole in which to place his clothes." The larger part of the pool should be three to four feet deep with a dividing space at least nine feet deep at one end. If it is less than nine feet, crack their heads on the BRUSH News that the Bear Valley dam is now at the crest and that further rainfall will carry millions of gallons of flood waters down the Santa Ana river, should further flood conditions prevail, does not daunt in the least the courageous spirits of Fritz Yungbluth, Secretary Dlerker, Charlie Hollingshead, John Cook, Joe Carroll and a score of others interested in the curbing of that famous stream. When informed yesterday by the C. of C. that Engineer McBride had conveyed the news that further flow in the great water shed might endanger the work already done on the Anaheim "frontier" of the unruly river, Fritz Yungbluth said: "We will meet the emergency. Our committee has been properly organized, but we sorely need the uncollected $2,000 which would now provide us not only with funds to complete the placing of brush against the levee, between that and the pilng, but also leave us a small fund to combat the waters, as they reach a dangerous crest." John Cook, one of the fellows who has stood knee-deep in the floods of 1921-2, and Charlie Hollingshead, has done his "bit," re-echoed the opinion of compadres emphatically, and H. P. Dlerker stated there would be help from the nearby ranches and the committee workers any time the waters looked rough. SAYS BOYS STOLE AUTO, SOLD PARTS Vern Berry, Roy Gano, John Noutary, Arthur Finch and Jack Sheranano were arraigned this morning before Judge French on the charge of taking an automobile from San Pedro, bringing it to Fullerton and tearing it up, and making away with the parts. All the boys except Noutary had been before the court before on other charges, and the whole bunch was remanded to the juvenile court. Confessions were made by some of the boys. Several of the boys were members of the former "Hill Rovers" band, which occasioned the police so much trouble last year. J. Levitt was fined $10 by Judge French on the charge of speeding. The judge also sentenced three "no-boos" to 30 days each in the county jail. "The larger part of the pool should be three to four feet deep with a dividing space at least nine feet deep at one end. If it is less than nine feet, divers will crack their heads on the bottom. "A rope or fence should afford a place for women to themselves. "Care should be taken that all water wings are new, as they soon rot and often play out on non-swimmers in deep water, endagering lives. "There should be showers for all bathers before entering the pool. "Water, when it comes out of the wells, is 62 degrees. An outside pool should be 72 degrees. It should be built so the sun can hit it as much of the day as possible. There should be a fence to cut off the cool evening breeze from the ocean. If the water isn't warm, bathers won't go in, and you want just as large a percent of the public as possible to enjoy the plunge." Madlener applied for the position of swimming instructor at the city plunge, saying if he were given the position he would sell his ranch and move into Anaheim.
