AUTOMOBILE SECTION VOL. XXVI—NO. 112 XMAS TREES IN GARAGE WINDOWS Christmas decorations fill the show windows of local automobile distributors today. The Christmas tree predominates with snowy cars about equal in evidence. One of the most interesting exhibits is that of Turton & Lumsdon, which, with its usual originality, shows a Maxwell coupe, sedan and two touring cars decorated with the Christmas red and green. Harry D. Riley, Studebaker distributor, has one of the most elaborate exhibits of all. A silent Santa stancks with one hand on a Studebaker touring, there is an attractively decorated Christmas tree, and the corner window is half-enclosed in a lattice work of red and green paper about an excellent display of accessories. The Anaheim Auto Co. needs no additional decorations, with two handsome new 1923 Buick sport touring cars and several others of its finest Buicks, but has erected one of the prettiest trees in town near the entrance to the showrooms. The Frank P. Taggart Company, Bob White Co., Hubbell & Wimmer, and other firms also have displays. BAKERSFIELD MAN JOINS BOB WHITE George Weatherwax formerly of Bakersfield has joined the Bob White forces. Mr. Weatherwax comes highly recommended as a Nash and Franklin salesman from the Kern-co. Agency in Bakersfield where he has been employed for the past two years. He and his wife plan to make Anaheim their home. The parents of Mrs. Weatherwax reside here. KNOW YOUR OWN LICENSE NUMBER? Do you know your own license number? Almost five out of every nine automobile owners in California cannot give their state license number off hand if called for suddenly, say officials of the theft bureau of the Automobile Club of Southern California. This is the cause of many motorists losing their machines every month, say authorities. If your car is stolen, the first thing the detectives of the theft bureau of the Auto club will ask is: "What is its license number?" then you will have to give the engine number and details regarding essential points of description. If a motorist is unable to give the license number at once, the auto thief stands a fair chance of getting out of the state with the stolen car because there is no way of stopping him by telegraph or radio at the state's borders, as could be done if the license numbers were available. Mann's shop on South Los Angeles street hasn't been so jammed in months as it is at present. Recently he received a new commercial truck, a Graham Bros. truck and two new Dodge touring cars. The new models are available now in quantity, Mann says, and deliveries may be expected within a few weeks at the outside. HARGROVE DRIVES HUDSON SEDAN NOW A. E. Hargrove liked his Hudson touring car so well that he bought this week a Hudson sedan, also, to drive during the wet weather. "The president of the Anaheim Realty Board knows a good car when he sees it," says H. R. Grove, branch manager for Townsend & Medbery, local distributors. This new sedan is a beauty of beauties. With a new body, manufactured by one of the subsidiaries of the corporation, splendidly upholstered in broadcloth, the most complete instrument board to be found on any machine made, this sedan is conspicuous in any company. Brunswick Tread Not Gone in a Day The new Brunswick swastika tread cord is coming into rapid favor here, according to Daniels & Williams, local distributors, who have sold many of the tires to patrons. Here is a tread which not only protects a driver on wet pavements, but contains as much rubber as is consistent with anti-skid demons and does not wear off in a few months. Protection against skidding is necessary at all seasons of the year, according to the particular locality, says the firm. The Brunswick - Blake - Collendar Company, which makes them, is one of the oldest and most reputable manufacturing concerns in the country. Battery Is Nerves Of Auto, Says Ennis You pay a lot of attention to your tires because you see them all the time, says George Eennis of the Automotive Electric Company. How about your battery, which is the nerves of the machine? The Exide battery was the first starting and lighting battery made for automobiles and it profited earliest from the common mistakes. The Bell telephone system, Marconi wireless, the government, famous explorers—all have chosen the Exide as the one battery about which their is no guesswork which "The enclosed car of the future must be tight in construction, comfortable like the Jordan, balanced to prevent weaving on the chassis and appointed in good taste." says Edward S. Jordan, manufacturer of the car which bears his name. And there you have one of the secrets of Jordan's success, says the J. E. MAN WHO SHOT OWN GIRL COLLAPSES SOUTH BEND, Ind., Dec. 23.—The Spartan front that John R. Wyman tried tragically to maintain after her had shot his 15-year-old TESTS FOR DRIVERS URGED Following many suggestions made by its members, the legal department of the Automobile Club of So. Calif. is struggling with contemplated provisions for changes in the motor vehicle act next year. Undoubtedly the present vehicle act will be changed, say club officials. A suggestion is made, and it is backed by a large number of club members, that an examination be taken by all who apply for permits to operate a motor vehicle in California. This examination, it is said, should inquire into the physical fitness of the applicant; into his understanding of the mechanics of driving a motor vehicle and into his knowledge of the elementary road rules. The argument advanced in favor of this suggestion is the experience of the state of Massachusetts. Figures obtained from Massachusetts show that now one-fourth of those who apply are denied permission to operate an automobile. The first year such a system was applied, 14 per cent of the applicants were rejected and it is also reported that immediately the accidents throughout MAN WHO SHOT OWN GIRL COLLAPSES SOUTH BEND, Ind., Dec. 23.
