NEWSPAPER HELP
R. R. DEVELOPMENT
"Newspaper advertising is going to play an important part in railroad development within the next few years. Railroads, like retail merchants, have found in this daily visitor to the homes and places of business of its patrons actual potential—a perfect messenger. This is because, and Passenger Traffic Manager Chas. S. Pee, of the So. Pac Co., recently that the So. Pac selected more than 500 daily and weekly newspapers to help in carrying out a plan whereby the people of California can themselves help bring to Calif. settlers of their own selection."
"The So. Pac Co. regards advertising as a necessary and efficient aid to service, and has used it extensively. It has used it solely for the purpose of making our service more generally available and of greater value. Every advertisement placed by So. Pac deals directly with service, either to its patrons or for the ubbuilding of the state.
"The So. Pac spends every year many thousands of dollars in advertising. We employ a great variety of mediums, but for certain purposes, we find the newspaper our most efficient helper.
"We plan for bringing settlers to Calif. includes placing a series of half page and full page advertisements in daily and weekly newspapers throughout the state. Each advertisement calls attention to the special opportunities California offers settlers of all kinds, both agricultural and industrial. Readers are invited to send to the company the names of friends in the east or elsewhere who might be interested in making their homes in California, and to those people the So. Pac Co. will send the entire series of advertisements—a set of booklets prepared by Californiaus. Incorporated; the All-Year club of So. Calif.; San Diego—California Club; and other matter-giving detailed information about the different sections of the state.
Also literature will be sent concerning any particular issue."

"The So. Pac. Co. within the last ten years has brought more than 5,000,000 tourists and settlers from the East to the Pacific coast, and in that time expended more than $5,500,000 in advertising.
"California with its endless undeveloped resources, needs people and capital more than anything else. Thus So. Pac. Co. has done, and will continue to do its share towards bringing the right kind of people to this state, and will continue to count the newspaper as its most efficient aid in this work."
GERMANY PLANS WAR
PARIS, Dec. 22—and Andre Nichelin, speaking here today before a gathering of political and industrial leaders, charged that Germany is planning another war—with a new deadly gas that can penetrate any late cities.
He declared that German fociories are now turning out war materials chiefly poisonous, also terpedo planes.

BRUNSWICK FINE FOR XMAS PRESENT
The Brunswick makes a handsome Chris gift and every home should enjoy the delights of this popular musical instrument. Dehnstraction may be heard any time, every day at Schmidt's Music store, 177 W.Center.The Brunswick oval tone amplifier, or tone chamber, banishes the "minnow" sound so common in the old type phonograph.
One of the good selling points of the Brunswick is that the machine will play all kinds of records without changing parts. To hear one of them is to be convinced of its superior quality, and as a suggestion for a Christmas gift which all the family may enjoy, there is none better—(Advertisement)
