NEED BETTER WAY TO HARVEST NUTS Acting on information from the California Walnut Growers Ass'n that thousands of dollars have been lost to the growers thru lax harvesting methods the last few years, the regional walnut committee, which met at Los Angeles last Monday, has made better harvesting methods one of the principal projects for the coming year. Moldy nuts and amber meats have generally resulted from allowing the nuts to remain on the ground too long. The common practice of picking up every two weeks, and in many cases, once in three or even four weeks, causes a serious depreciation in the quality and color of the nuts, especially where the ground is inclined to be damp from soil or atmospheric moisture. Experimental plots conducted by the Citrus Experiment Station during the past season reveal that more expeditions harvesting—early shaking and prompt picking, will produce a better nut in every way and less mold is encountered. The Walnut Department of the Orange-co. Farm Bureau considers this problem of paramount importance in this county. When the program of work is drawn up at the next meeting, this project will be included, looking to the establishment of comparative harvesting plots next season. James Smiley, West Orange, Arthur McFadden, Irvine and Farm Advisor Wahlberg represented the Walnut Department of Orange County at the So. Calif. conference. An invitation was extended at this meeting by the delegates to hold the next So. Calif. Walnut Growers Field Day in Orange-co. If the invitation is accepted, a thousand walnut growers from So. Calif. will come here in August.
