DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS They heard not, yet they rest in calm content. And not unsought will give; They can be quiet with their wealth unspent. So self-contained they live. ---Caroline Spencer--- The United States will not stand indifferently by and see the whole economic structure of Europe collide. This nation will interpose in some manner. But Europe must do its part. Whatever stimulates patriotism in this country should be encouraged. Love of country should be fostered, particularly in the young. Their devotion should be deep and abiding. The best Christmas gift Europe could give, itself and the world would be to compose its racial and international quarrels, forego its selftish designs, bury its hatreds, put aside militarism and imitate the life, methods and relations of the countries of this western hemisphere. When one sees a good, clean, inspiring motion picture one should praise it with as much zeal as one should condemn an unclean, improper picture. The photoplay is here to stay, and its influence is tremendous. Whenever this influence is of the right kind, it should be commended. The wilderness places in America gradually but surely are being conquered. Automobiles and airships are siding in this. The intrepid spirit of explorers is carrying them to the utmost limits of the waste places. Desert and mountain and morass are being invaded and their secrets laid bare. Airships are establishing aeronautics from Sacramento to the effect that Governor-elect Richardson willhew off approximately $12,000,000 from the state's budget for the fiscal years 1923 and 1924, as compared with the last biennium, is exceedingly good news for taxpayers. While the budget has not been made with finality in toto, tentative figures for all the departments and bureaus have been drafted. The intention of Mr. Richardson to put into practical effect his campaign pledges of economy and business-like administration of the state government is apparent. The people expect this and, seemingly, they will not be disappointed. It is to be hoped that California may enter upon an era of wholesome governmental economies without impairing the efficiency or progressive usefulness of any department of the state's government. It is to be hoped, too, that there may be less partisanism in state government—that the cardinal purpose, at Sacramento, of all the state offices and of the legislature may be business-like, retreatment and singleness of aim to give the people the best service possible, without political maneuvering in the process. URGING ECONOMIES IN PHILIPPINE RULE Greater economy in government is urged upon the Philippine Legislature by Gen. Leonard Wood, Governor General of the Islands. General Wood is endeavoring to put Philippine rule upon sound business basis, and yet to divorce the government from engaging in business in the forms usually covered by private interests. It is unfortunate that the United States, in admonishing the Philippines and Cuba to be more economical in government, has not set all should condemn an unclean, improper picture. The wilderness places in America gradually but surely are being conquered. Automobiles and airships are siding in this. The intrepid spirit of explorers is carrying them to the utmost limits of the waste places. Desert and mountain and morass are being invaded and their secrets laid bare. Airships are establishing aerial highways over the inhospitable desert and the bleak mountain. Automobiles are threading the hitherto trackless wilds. The day is coming when every square mile of this continent will be made accessible. Christmas is essentially the holiday of the young. Around this festive season the greatest thrills and the fondest dreams and tenderest memories linger. Make it happy for the little ones. They will grow up soon and be plunged into cares. While yet their hearts are susceptible to the joys native to childhood, let their cup of delight be full at Yule title. It celebrates the birth of the Christ. And the Christ moved little children and set them up as exemplars before the world. PHILIPPINE RULE Greater economy in government is urged upon the Philippine Legislature by Gen. Lennard Wood, Governor General of the Islands. General Wood is endeavoring to put Philippine rule upon sound business basis, and yet to divorce the government from engaging in business in the forms usually covered by private interests. It is unfortunate that the United States, in admonishing the Philippines and Cuba to be more economical in government, has not at all times set a good example at Washington. Those insular governments might, if so disposed, say to Uncle Sam, "Physician, heal thyself!" For this country admittedly has been and is an sorry need of "healing" along the line of governmental economies. Malicious tongues, by slanderous falsehoods, may mar reputations, but they cannot detract from what one really is. The present is far removed from the stone age, with its barbarities. But the present is in danger of tapping into a stone-hearted age of seifishness as barbaric in its way as the stone age, even though more refined. Perhaps Europe is after the record for a non-stop fight. The housing problem wouldn't be so difficult if the people would attend the movies in shifts. Don't be stupid. How in thunder do you suppose the grocer knows whether the eggs are fresh? No wonder the bride's mother weeps. It is simply the relaxation from a long and successful campaign. Europe must remember, however, that the marry-him-to-reform-him idea has been tried and found wanting. Another good substitute for coal is a ticket to Florida or Southern California. Daughter is unfailingly thoughtful, and she now is selecting the nice things Dad is to give her for Christmas. Wine, women and song! Deceased trinity. The wine is gone. Where the moon in Southern splendour, sheds its radiance all around. Where the Fire Flies, dance "fandangos" through the mystic myrtle trees. And the throbbing of the Moro drums, is borne upon the breeze. Zamboanga, Zamboanga, shall I ne'er see these again! Nor lean against that old stone wall, and gaze across the main. Where the distant hills of Basilan, stand silent in the gloom. As I listen to the never-ending Turtle Dove's soft croon? Ah no;—the years are passing, and the hot blood's cooled at last. And it's only in my dreaming, I can live again, the past. When I'm sitting by the fireside with my Airedale at my feet. It is then the curtain rises, and the misty forms I greet. Zamboanga, Zamboanga,—you are there—and I am here— And the wide wide world's between us to be crossed no more, I fear. And the fire files still are dancing—but they'll dance no more for me. It is "Goodbye" Zamboanga,—a long "Goodbye,"—to thee. H. EASTON-JENNER, 521 S. Los Angeles-st, Anaheim. TOWN IN REVIEW Bandits shot up the Denver mint and got away with $200,000. Word has been sent out from Washington that hereafter President Harding will be "hard-bolled." There may be something to that. Almost any man would be "hard-bolled" if he had been in hot water as long as Uncle Warren has. West Virginia man of 83 has just ridden his first street car, and this is a long time to wait for a street car. "Brothers Under the Skin" is the name of a new Peter B. Kyne picture, and Beatrice Jassax says the title roles are played by two hot dogs. Some kids get what they want while others get sensible presents. Man named Schmack was fined $100 given 100 days in jail and lost his operator's license for reckless driving. Schmack, bang!—as it were. It is estimated that the mail is full of letters beginning, "I am a little girl (or boy) 10 years old." FAMOUS LOCAL FIRMS Early & Late, Ham & Eggs, Mayor & Council, Anaheim & No, Orange-co. You may despise a man's opinions concerning other matters, but if he likes you, you know he has some good qualities. Love is the quality that keeps a wife from day-dreaming about what she could do with John's insurance money. The sad part is not that anybody should get a divorce, but that anybody should be so unfortunate as to desire it. Says an agitator: "There are crooks in high places, but the man in the street is upright." Not if a flivverite sees him first. Education increases your earning capacity unless you happen to become an educator. Somehow, isolation doesn't seem quite so splendid when you reflect that a friendly word would place the other fellow on his feet. Correct this sentence: "Our cook isn't good," said Mrs. Newrich at the party, "and it's all I can do to keep from going into the kitchen to do it myself." WISE AND WITTY Stagnant minds pollute their own systems. Polish is always on the surface whereas, to polish—is rubbing it in. Job hunting season is always open to incompetent workers. Surely no less than this is the right of our people, nor should be the effort of the nation to give through its schools. If this is true, then education now and in the future must command a more solid and dependable support than it has in the past. For such a program of education will be costly. It will mean more and better-built school houses; ample and useful equipment in shop, laboratory, and library; for playgrounds, assemblies, and recreation reems; and above all it will mean a teaching stiff with a better understanding of the motives that more men and women in the conduct of modern affairs.
