The Plain Dealer AD SANTEL STILL WRESTLING CHAMP (By Sargum Sprout) Ad Santel is still light heavyweight champion of the world, having won last night's match with Roy Mabee in two straight falls. Roy Mabee is still our pride. He went down to noble defeat. He lacked the difference in weight, the 11 or 12 pounds of muscle which represents considerable power and strength. Roy had the speed and was on top his man most of the time for the first hour and fifteen minutes. Mabee started right after Santel, going to the mat in the first seconds and securing a half nelson that worried Santel considerable before the hold was broken. For the first 30 minutes Roy punished Ad time and again with double wrist locks and half nelsons. Ad rolled Roy into a double arm scissors in the 33rd minute. This particular hold is one of Ad's own pets and is very seldom broken. Roy broke it in less than two minutes. Pudillo was unable to break it at all. Roy broke another of the same holds in the 70th minute. Roy's best chance for a full came at about the 60th minute when he clamped on a head scissors. Ad was barely able to break loose. Ad secured an arm key soon after Roy had escaped the last double arm scissors, which took Roy some time to break and which weakened him greatly. A few seconds later Ad secured another arm key which-Roy was unable to break, the fall coming in 1 hr. 30 mi. 52 sec. Some time in the first hour Roy had received a fracture to a rib and during the rest between falls this began to pain and become sore. Roy came back game. His speed and wind was still good but his strength was whining. At that he led on another whale of a preliminary, Quigley is just a little better than Hill and won in two straight falls. The first was the result of a body lock and toe hold in 28 minutes, the second fall came by a head scissors in 8 minutes 21 seconds. ANCIENT CASABA ENEMIES MEET FRI. Anaheim's first squad basketball shooters meet the fast Orange quitter in the local gym Friday evening. The other battle of the evening will be the midget scramble between Huntington Beach and Coach Ray Elliott's babes. The Anaheim flewweights won them several nights ago and wish for the same luck again. Last year, Anaheim was defeated by Orange to the tune of 29 to 12. Dopsters have it figured out the score should be reversed Friday night. Coach Elliott and Capt. Dana Newkirk have been constantly drilling the basket ball stars. Art Mann, one of the most dependable men on the team, will be out of the game this year, owing to an injured knee. The probable line-ups: Anaheim—Forwards, Ross and Pohlmann, center, Wallace; Guards, Hile and Newkirk and Kolb. Orange—Forwards, Thompson and Smith; center, Thompson; Guards, Jones and Brubaker. Anaheim 110-pound players: Jayne, Bastian and Lewis; sub, center, Utter; guards, Giss and Cailor. Giss was the speedy little demon of the football squad and is expected to do some brilliant work during the casaba season. S. C. should score a victory over Penn State when the two eleven tangle at Pasadena, Jan. 1. Critics throut out the East, following the departure of the Nittany Lions for the Pacific Coast last night, declared that Hugo Bezdek was taking his pigskinners a long way to receive a neat trimming. Defeat of Pennsylvania, Ohio State and Brown in East vs. West affairs may have changed the minds of football followers in the East. But, it is the general opinion in So. Cal. football circles that statements to the effect the Trojans will win over the Nittany Lions are merely preliminaries to the old oil, "State didn't have the class to win." When Penn State was defeated by Pittsburg in one of the closing struggles of the season word came West from Philadelphia to the effect Bezdek was foolish to take such a weak team to Sc. Cal. to face the assault of a machine which had held the wonder outfit of U. of C. to a 12 to 0 score. But, it is evident that Bezdek knows his business and it would not be surprising if his squad would be one of the most powerful in the country when it takes the field against the Cardinal and Gold. Inexperience probably kept the State squad from beating Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the Navy. Since these defeats, the veteran mentor has remoulded his machine and if reports from the little Eastern college town may be taken into consideration the lineup shift has worked wonders. West Virginia, one of the five undefeated elevens in the Far East this ONLY ONE WILD-CAT WELL LOOKS GOOD (With Oil Operators) Aside from one section of So. Calif., none of the dozen or more wild cat wells now drilling are looking encouraging. The showing the Cal-Petro Oil Producers Syndicate got at Bellflower seems to put this field at the head of the list for a future field. The Union Oil Co.'s Downey Community is now at 4600 feet drilling in conglomerate, the outlook not being at all promising. Drilling has been suspended by the Standard Oil Co. at Buena Park. While there is not official announcement that the well will be abandoned it is the general concession of opinion that there is nothing there. In the Bixby Hills the National Security has 4450 feet of hole drilled, and some recent showing are lending encouragement to production within the next 100 feet. The Fairview Oil Company has decided to spend no more time fishing and will sidetrack the tools lost at 4088 and go ahead. The Fairview Oil company has had some very good showings and there is little doubt about this company presenting Southern California with a new field. The chief concern in the field of wild cats now is the Seal Beach Oil Co. Drilling has passed the 4500 foot mark and aside from shale showings and gas there has been nothing very strong. Opinion is divided on the outcome of Seal Beach. The drilling is getting down to a point where something will be showing one way or the other pretty soon. The Seal Beach Oil company deserves a well for its pioneering work and may get its reward. LADY ASTOR CLASHES WITH LABOR LEADER LONDON, Dec. 20. — "Lloyd George won the war!" shouted Lady Naney Astor, American-born member of parliament, when a Laborite in the house of commons accused the former premier of leading France to believe that she could recover the whole cost of war from Germany. "It's a good thing he didn't win you," retorted the Laborite pointing his finger at Lady Astor. Lloyd George previously stated he had approved of the reparations policy of Britain as outlined by Premier Bonar Law. West Virginia, one of the five undefeated eleven in the Far East this year, which will arrive in this section Friday for their contest against Gonzaga at San Diego on Christmas afternoon, is another aggregation which started from its home town with a wonderful record only to have reports come from other sections to the effect the team had been badly overrated during the season. However, football records for the past season show the mountaineers to be one of the classiest scoring machines in the entire country. Any grid fan will admit it takes more than a reputation to win contests. Gonzaga's true strength is unknown in this section, but those who have witnessed games in which the Washington outfit showed declare the team to be an exceptionally well balanced aggregation. SWAT PALACE DARK UNTIL AFTER XMAS (By Sargum Sprout) Manager Billy Darley is going to leave the old swat palace dark this week so that everyone may attend the city Xmas tree. The fight emporium has not been paying dividends as it should and Darley expects to make several changes in the management when it reopens after the holidays. The night may be changed from Friday to Thursday. Darley has been playing good talent but somehow Anahelmers have not been inoculated with the fight bug just right to make for a good and paying attendance. TIP THAT CLARA MAY BE STOWAWAY LOS ANGELES, Dec. 29.—Colледent with the increase to $1000 of the reward offered for the capture of Clara Phillips the sheriff's office today, acting on an anonymous tip requested port and steamship officials to be on the lookout for the "tiger woman" as a stowaway. According to the tip, an underworld gang has been trying to arrange with deckhands and wharf "rats" to slip "a young kid, not very strong" on board for passage to the Orient.
