MORE STRIKES SEEN BY GOVERNOR ALLEN NEW YORK, Dec. 18 — Transportation and coal strikes on as great, if not greater scale than the two in the past year are foreseen by Governor Henry J. Allen of Kansas. These national strikes said the executive, whose fight for the industrial court focused the eyes of the nation on him, will occur within the next year, or possibly in two years. In an interview given today he said that the trend of reducing wages which will continue in proportion to the reduction in the cost of living, will be fought by "professional labor leaders" and consequently, the two strikes on a national scale, are bound to come. He declined to say in what field of transportation industry, one of the strikes would occur. Out of these two strikes, he proposed, will come national and state legislation which will give to whatever organization the government Fewer infants die in New Zealand than in any other country in the world. In 1919 the death rate under one year was only 45 to every 1,000 life births compared with 57 in the United States. A study of New Zealand's low rate made by our government shows the greatest reduction has been made during the last 10 to 15 years as the result of the work of the Royal New Zealand Health Society which gives free advice and assistance to all mothers. Until the recent passage of the Sheppard-Towner Act, our states and government have devoted their attention chiefly to saving the infant life of swine and other livestock. We are just getting on the map in following the enlightened policy of New Zealand and European countries in an effort to reduce our high infant mortality. Practically unknown in America, Sir Basil Zaharoff is credited with being one of the few great powers of Europe. Lord Beaverbrook has recently written an article indirectly tracing many of Britain's misfortunes in the Near East to Sir Basil. The London press which opposes Lloyd George has attacked Sir Basil during the recent Near East Crisis and has inferred most strongly that it was due to his influence that Lloyd Prince Andrew of Greece, brother of former King Constantine, and his wife, Princess Alice, a cousin of King George of England. Prince Andrew was tried by a courtmartial on charges of treason in losing the war with the Turks, but was spared the death penalty, suffered by others. LONDON, Dec. 18.—The Mystery Man of Europe—Sir Basil Zaharoff! Practically unknown in America, Sir Zasil Zaharoff is credited with being one of the few great powers of Europe. Lord Beaverbrook has recently written an article indirectly tracing many of Britain's misfortunes in the Near East to Sir Basil. The London press which opposes Lloyd George has attacked Sir Basil during the recent Near East Crisis and has inferred most strongly that it was due to his influence that Lloyd George backed the unsuccessful and disastrous ventures of the Greeks in Asia Minor. Sir Basil Zaharoff is credited with having amassed a fortune of some $100,000,000. He was born in Russia, of a Greek father and a French mother. He went to Paris to make his fortune, and he made it. He was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Bath by Lloyd—an unexamined distinction for one not a subject of Great Britain. KIWANIS HI JINKS AT UNITED THEATER WEDNESDAY EVENING Tomorrow night at the United Theater, the Anaheim Kiwanis club is going to hold forth a Hi Jinks vaudeville program of various stunts. It will be in the nature of a community entertainment and the proceeds will be devoted to Christmas joy for families and kiddies whose outlook is anything but bright for a happy Christmas. It is the plan of the Kiwanis club, in conjunction with other organizations, to make everybody in Anaheim happy this Yule-tide. The feature picture is Colleen Moore in "The Wall Flower." Miss Moore, captivating little screen actress, was run over by an automobile recently. Yes, really—no, reely. The car actually passed over her, but she wasn't hurt a bit. It was done for a scene in "The Wall Flower," a Goldwyn picture by Rupert Hughes. The company, under the direction of Mr. Hughes, worked all night to get the scene, but it will occupy only a minute or so on the screen. Mr. Hughes and his associates are keeping the process a deep secret. A new method was devised by Mr. Hughes and used for the first time. It worked admirably. Although she wasn't hurt a bit, Miss Moore says she got a big thrill out of having the car pass over her body. Mr. Hughes wrote into his scenario that the Wall Flower should be so broken-hearted after a college dance that she should go out and hurl herself in front of an auto. And then he had to figure out how to do it without killing an actress. There will be comedies in pictures, and vaudeville stunts, also. The usual prices will prevail.
