This was indicated by: 1. The repeated assertion that the public secured to demand speediest improvement; 2. Adoption of ordinance calling for bids Jan. 15, earliest practical date, on $100,000 park bonds, recently voted; along with $40,000 city hall and $25,000 paying bonds; 3. Assurance to Cook & Hall, landscape architects who prepared the comprehensive plans that the architecture would be carried out sympathetically with the spirit of the other developer; 4. Ready agreement with a suggestion from the C. of C., that appropriate ceremonies be held, preferably on Arbor Day next spring, dedicate the park; 5. Denial of a request from the Calif. Valencia Orange show for use of the park for the next May's affair unless they confine themselves to the athletic field, about $50 feet square, because planting of trees and shrubs must proceed; 6. Approval of a suggestion by Mayor Wm. Stark that a large Christmas tree be planted for appropriate use each year at a Community Yulotide celebration and which "would grow with the city." The park and other bonds will be in $1000 denominations and draw five per cent interest. The park and city hall bonds are for 40 years and the paving bonds ten years. C. of C. Secretary Malcom Fraser petitioned relief for 65 families in the Mexican colony, north of town who claim water furnished by the Lawrie pumping plant is inadequate and unsanitary despite the fact Lawrie has been ordered by the R. R. commission to make it right. Fraser presented a touching letter from Martin Sanchez, janitor at the C. of C. and resident of the colony, with a petition signed by 40 Mexican families, circulated at a mass meeting, asking the city to serve them water or incorporate them. Council agreed NEAR EAST RELIEF COMMITTEE SEEKS Members of the Near East Relief Committee call on President Hardin official appropriation to care for the refugees in the stricken areas of shown here are left to right, President James L. Barton; J. B. Payne, chair Postmaster General Will Hays, who has been appointed by the Presidency; R. G. Cuddihy, member of the executive committee and Elliot W Cross. BIG ADVERTISING FUND Telling the world about the wonders of the great section of the Golden State lying south of the Tehachapi mountains in a six months' advertising campaign, will call for an expenditure of $200,000, according to plans announced today by the All-Year Club of Southern California. Pictures showing many of the scenic marvels and attractions that help to make the Southland the all-year playground of America and the world have been gathered by the club from every possible source to illustrate the advertising copy. Council agreed that the policy of refusing water to those outside the city could not be varied and suggested that the C. of C. see what could be done to extend the corporate limits not only to include the colony but as much more territory as possible. This would also take in the Valencia orange show grounds and the Vanderhoreck subdivision which had asked for water with the understanding that the tract be included in the city within a year. Council declined to serve water to the tract until it is in the city. In connection with the request of the orange show that it be permitted to use the park again next May, Fraser stated $1500 had been spent for fertilizer on the 15-acre ranch bot for an orange show site and it was desired to get the results from the fruit, rather than cut out enough trees for the show site. Fraser stated enough money had been offered for the five acres fronting Citron-st to leave only $18,000 owing for the remaining ten acres. Council received notice of the R. R. commission hearing in Los Angeles on the transfer of the Crown Stage line to the Motor Transit. A resolution approving the extension of Illinois-st thru the Lohman tract was adopted. An ordinance intended to prevent interference with the fire department while the fire truck is responding to an alarm was given first reading. Those guilty of driving too closely behind the truck will be fined not more than $100 or be sentenced to not more than 30 days in jail. The contract admitting Orange into the outfall sewer was approved. The city manager was instructed to advertise for 3000 barrels of road oil. It was reported dthat John Casson was ready to give a deed for the widening of Center-st if he were not compelled to set back his buildings at the corner of Clementine-st. He would agree to set back anytime there was new construction in the block to the west. Chairman Gates of the park committee was instructed to proceed with installation of sidewalk and curb along the new set-back line on the Lemon-st side of the park. CHICAGO WOMAN MAY OCCULY FEDERAL BENCH Miss Florence King, a Chicago attorney who has been booned by the Republican Woman's Club of Chicago to fill the vacancy on the northern district of Illinois federal bench. Miss King has been practicing law in the federal court for over 20 years and is a recognized authority on patent laws. Her plea for appointment has been made before President Harding. To relieve automobile tires of the weight of side cars a jack that can be operated with a foot has been invented to raise cars by the hubs of their wheels. CALIFORNIA MITTEE SEEKS HARDING'S AID Singers Have Unexpected "Tryout" Over Radio If Van and Schenck, America's highest salaried comedian, performers de luxe of the Ziegfeld Follies, tire of the Great White Way and its luxuries, they stand a good chance to land a job with the owner of a chain of motion picture theatres in the Southwest. Said owner was listening in at the big wireless station at San Antonio, Texas, recently, and heard "Wabash Blues" come over the ether waves from a sending station at Cincinnati, where the famous team was appearing with the "Follies." The distant movie magnate didn't know just who Van & Schenck were, but he showed an ear for talent by writing the broadcasting station at Cincinnati: "When you are through with the two fellows who sang 'Wabash Blues' for you March 1, I will be glad to hear from them. I feel sure that they could make good as singers in my theatre down here" It Pays to Advertise in the Orange County Plain Dealer. CALL on President Harding at the White House, seeking the stricken areas of the Near East. In the group carton; J. B. Payne, chairman of the Red Cross, former appointed by the President to head all Near East committee and Elliot Wadsworth, treasurer of the Red FREDRICK ESTATE $4500 The estate of John Fredrick is valued at $4500 and consists of a lot in the Hotel del Camp tract.
