A. Geleinger at the White Temple has text being Heb. 9:13-4. "The Epistle to the Hebrews was rightly been called the first Christian apology. Its argument is that Christianity is superior to all religious preceding it in that it does what religion is supposed to do, namely bring men into living fellowship with God. And because it does this it may be considered the final religion. For no other religion can do more." Its argument comes to a climax in contrasting the redemption of the old dispensation and the new. The annotated copy plainly that the blood for a few moments. It is no theological fiction nor is it sensible for us to play the patrick and refuse to face it about. That is simply sp... doey. Sin is not a matter of the heart simply. It is brought forth in the heart but it has a marvelous manner of walking out of the precincts of the heart on to the streets of the world. Take the bolder ones that the Word of God warns us against: Thou shalt not kill, steal, lie, commit adultery. Do we know anything about murder? Are we not all familiar with thieves and robbers and their work, which is in every community. And lying is that an unknown evil among us Americans? And adultery—the under-world, the harlot, procurer, the red-light law—these terms stand for only facts. "It is not necessary to speak of the subtler sing spiritual sloth." A. Gelsinger at the White Temple has text being Hob 9:13:4. "The Epistle to the Hebrews now rightly been called the first Christian apology. Its argument is that Christianity is superior to all religions preceding it in that it does what religion is supposed to do, namely bring men into living fellowship with God. And because it does this it may be considered the final religion. For no other religion can do more. "Its argument comes to a climax in contrasting the redemption of the old dispensation and the new. The apostle says plainly that the blood of bulls and goats cannot cleanse the conscience and set the will in the right direction and this is just what Christianity does. The blood of Jesus purges the conscience from dead works and inspires man to serve the living God. "The Bible sets forth three facts—sin righteousness and redemption or grace. But primarily the Bible is a book of redemption and it comes to focus at the Cross of Calvary. Salvation is not by the teaching, the miracles, the personal grace or the life of Jesus but by his blood, his death. "The Bible is one in this emphasis upon the saving power of the blood of Jesus. In Romans 2:25 Christ is set forth as the propitiation for sin "Through faith in his blood". In Col 1:20 we read: Our Lord bath made 'peace thrue' the blood of his cross. "In Corinthians 1:10:16—The Lord's Supper revealed 'The communion of the blood of Christ'. In I Peter 1:19 we are reminded that our redemption is not by alver and gold but by the 'precious blood of Christ', as of a Lamb without blench and without spot. I John 1:7 says that the 'Blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin' just as he has said in his gospel: Behold the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world. Hebrews call attention to the fact that the blood of Jesus speaketh better things than the blood of righteous Abel and calle it 'the blood of the everlastingovenant'. Rev 1.5 speaks of Jesus as the one who hath washed us from our sins in his blood and John saw the salute in white robe washed in the blood of the Lamb 7:14. While in Acts 20:28 we are told of the church which he hath purchased with his own blood. "Let us look at this fact of sin It took 17 years insert vowed her willing to wait job by himself, constructed. How rich is the human record at this point it is a fact of history that again and again the sinner rise gone forth from the presence of the Suffering Redeemer, his conscience purged, to serve the Living God. "If it is true, as it is, that sin is not confined to the heart but wreaks its destruction upon the total life of the world, it is also true that salvation, the salvation wrought by Jesus Christ, is not a mere pious feeling rising and dying within the heart. Salvation manifests itself, fruits, in righteous living, in actual service, going forth with Christ as yoke-fellow to try to heal the hurt of sin and to build the Kingdom of God on earth. "The question for every man and woman her this morning is this: 'Have I resolved the atonement of Christ in my own heart?' Is my trust in the redeeming grave of God manifest in Christ?' Can I say: 'Simply to the Cross I cling?' Thou must have and thou alone?' In the hour and article of death no man takes very much comfort in the work he has DISMISS CHARGES AGAINST BURCH LOS ANGELES, Dec. 4. Final arrangements for the dismissal of the charges against Arthur Burch and Mrs. Madalynne Obenchain, tried for the murder of J. Belton Kennedy were made today at a conference between Superior Judge Shenk and District Attorney Woolwine. As a result of the conference Burch and Mrs. Obenchain probably will be released from the county jail before the end of the week, after having been held for more than a year on the murder charge. The dismissal of the charges was necessitated by the failure of five juries which tried them to agree on a verdict. About all that any of us can claim is that we are not quite so bad as the others. done and if then he cannot take refuge in the atonement of Jesus Christ he must be a poor troubled spirit going forth in rebellion against him and his purpose of grace for everyone. WRITER'S DEATH REMAINS MYSTERY SANFRANCISCO, Dec., A—Bohemian circles of San Francisco were being turned upside down by detectives today in an effort to secure information which would clear up the mystery surrounding the death of Harry Baratti, song writer and professional pianist. His pretty wife, Agnes Christy Baratti, former model and typist, charged with his murder by the police maintained the same sphinx-like silence regarding herself and the case today that she did when police rushed their apartment following the firing of three shots Sunday night. E. Allen California Biological Feature Service The other day I read in a popular magazine a very interesting article about ants. Some of it was true but some of it was false, absurdly false. As it is so often the case, the untruthful part was the most interesting. Truth may be stranger than fiction (sometimes) but well told fiction is always more alluring than truth unadorned. My especial interest in this particular lot of fiction is that it involves some extremely common errors based on the tendency of mankind to ascribe to other objects qualities which he possesses or to use himself as a standard by which to judge them. sect probably gives some advantages in lessening the relative weight of its own body. The fact that the bodies of the largest of insects are only three or four inches in length indicates that their peculiarities of form and structure are opposed to large size. They are so different from men that it is absurd to compare the two living things without carefully summarizing the points of difference. Some people (amongst them some noted scientists of the past) have been so persistent in making these fanciful comparisons that at several times in the last three or four centuries mathematicians and physicists have applied the principals of mechanics to the question and have found that in the main the muscular mass Fort Myer, Va., who was quite doing the entire rooms and well new home. DEATH IS MYSTERY Dec. 4.—Boheman Francisco were able down by detective effort to secure would clear up the death of the writer and proAgnes Christy model and typist, moulder by the poe same sphinx-like herself and the did when police ment following the acts Sunday night. AMAKER'S CONSTANT SAME A. Pau. Dec. 4.—John Wanamaker came today as last physicians announce known merchant. At 7:30 this swing bulletin was somewhat restless maker's condition as last evening." My especial interest in this particular lot of fiction is that it involves some extremely common errors based on the tendency of mankind to ascribe to other objects qualities which he possesses or to use himself as a standard by which to judge them. For instance, the writer of the above mentioned article says that ant mounds have been found which in proportion to the size of the builders are two hundred times as large as the pyramids of Egypt and that a vertical shaft found in one mound was proportionately as great as would be one built by a man to a height of fourteen hundred feet. He also says that an ant's weight was compared with that of a pebble which it carried and that its feat of strength was similar to that of a man carrying a trunk weighing a thousand pounds. As a matter of fact, popular writers and speakers have for hundreds of years been accustomed to make just such amazing and interesting comparisons. And in all cases they have fallen into error because they have give attention only to one feature when comparing. In nearly all cases (as in this of the ant) the only feature considered is that of size. No attention whatever is given to structure and composition and other characteristics of the bodies chosen for comparison. It is well known that a small child can build a very nice tunnel of sand on the sea shore but not one of us is so ignorant as to ridicule an engineer because he cannot build a tunnel four to six times as big in the same loose material. The ant is built on quite a different architectural plan from that of man. The arrangement of most of the muscles is distinctly different and the very small size gives some relative mechanical advantages in their points of attachment. It is also possible that in very small masses insect muscle is slightly more efficient than that of mammals because it is adapted to make use of the more direct contact with supplies of oxygen. The system of air tubes running all through the body of an in- four inches in length indicates that their peculiarities of form and structure are opposed to large size. They are so different from men that it is absurd to compare the two living things without carefully summarizing the points of difference. Some people (amongst them some noted scientists of the past) have been so persistent in making these fanciful comparisons that at several times in the last three or four centuries mathematicians and physicians have applied the principals of mechanics to the question and have found that in the main the muscular mass of man and other mammals is slightly superior in effectiveness to that of insects. Personally, I am unable to follow the technical discussion involved but Professor D'Arcy W. Thompson of Dundee, Scotland, gives a brief explanation of some of the "Growth and Form." He also refers to several writers on the subject from 1685 to the present. Ants are remarkable animals, they do some truly amazing things and they are very interesting for many reasons but one needs to be careful as to what he believes concerning their prodigious performances. Size is not the one and only thing to consider when discussing relative exhibitions of strength and ability. 3 COLLEGE STUDENTS PERISH IN FIRE WATERVILLE, Me., Dec. 4. Three Colby college students were burned to death today in a fire in house. They were A. L. Andrews of Northpoit, Me., W. L. Fry of Revere, Mass., and Carl Swarrarzoy of Surrey, Me. A number of other students were driven to the street. The building was destroyed.
