Saturday, Dec. 2, 1922 ILLEGED TO SPEED PAST SPEEDER: CLUB It is all wrong for motorists to think that the speed limit on country roads in all "open" territory is 65 miles an hour. This, and some other funny ideas about the California speed limits is getting hundreds of autoists into trouble with the law, say officials of the Auto Club of Southern California. Outside of business and residence districts, the maximum speed limit on public highways in this state at night is 30 miles per hour always, and with out any exception. In the daytime, the limit is also 30 miles an hour, but with certain exceptions, points out the Auto club legal department. Under the day-time exception, it is lawful to travel over 30 but not to exceed 35 miles an hour on an open road where there are no intersecting highways on either side and where the motorist has a clear view ahead for 400 feet, and there is no person, vehicle or other object visible in this distance—then you can go 35 miles per hour. If one automobile is traveling 30 miles an hour, it is unlawful for a second automobile to overtake, and pass the first automobile. NEW I. B. S. STATION BEGINS OPERATIONS W. E. Altnow moved into his new Independent Battery Station yesterday. He is still moving and will be again Monday, because of an unavoidable delay in completing the offices. The contractor completed the job for P. H. Krick really ahead of time, but the wet weather made it necessary to give the plaster a chance to dry out. The building is as handsome on the exterior as it is convenient inside. The Brunswick-Balka-Collender Company, which manufactures this tire, is one of the oldest and most reputable manufacturing concerns in the country and their name and the service of Daniels and Williams, both experienced men, stand behind it. CADILLAC MOVIES ON AGAIN TONIGHT Those who missed the first performance of the movies and lecture at the showrooms of the Cadillac Garage Company, Santa Ana, last night because of the storm have another opportunity tonight. This five-reel picture shows many of the principal operations in the manufacture of one of America's most wonderful cars at the factory in Detroit. There is also a cutaway chassis, the same one shown at the Los Angeles show and which will be shown at the New York and Chicago shows in January, with a lecturer explaining which part and feature is which. The lecturer will be from the Don Lee agency in Los Angeles. This is the first cutaway chassis shown in Southern California, if anywhere in the country since 1918, it is said by a man who has been identified for years with Cadillac interests. A truck has been patented that enables one man to handle heavy rolls of linoleum or carpet. 36,000 MHL KELLYS It looks like W. Pickup When Eddie Hearne, the grand daddy of the racing fraternity, starts on the dizzy whirl at Beverly on Thanksgiving Day, he will have as a companion, the latest addition to the ranks of racing mechanics. Hearne’s mechanician’s name is C.V.Pickup, former lieutenant in the air services and survivor of the wreck at Kansas City Speedway that robbed the racing sport of that popular hero, Roscoe Sarles. For more than two years Pickup has been associated with R.C.Durant in aviation ventures. Fred Corner, Durant’s mechanician gave up his seat in the ill-fated racing car when Durant went on to New York and nominated Sarles as the relief driver. So anxious was Pickup to ride in the race that he offered his share of the prize money to Corner for the chance to ride with Sarles. That race was never finished by Pickup. He came to in the hospital two days later and learned that Sarlie was dead. The last thing he remembered was trying to crouch lower in his seat to give Sarlies elbow room to fight the wheel. That evidently happened just as the car hit the rail. As soon as Pickup was out of the hospital he declared his desire to continue his speed career until he was able to get his own car and take his place among the kings of speed. He wired to Durant asking for a place on the team that is to make its debut at Beverly on Thanksgiving Day and Durant turned the wire over to Eddie Hearne who promptly signed the former aviator as his riding mechanic.
