DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR LOWER TAXATION NEED OF READERS Father, how can I thus be bold to pray That Thou shalt grant me that, or spare me this? How should my ignorance not go astray, How should my foolish lips not speak amiss, And ask for woe, when fain they would ask bliss? —Susan Coolidge. Support the schools by encouraging teachers and pupils in their work. There should be no speculative gambling in foodstuffs or necessaries. Extract the detraction from political campaigns in California. Personal abuse wins no elections. Premier Lloyd George thrives on opposition. Britain never has had a more astute political leader. So long as the Turk is permitted to dominate any part of Europe, there will be trouble there. Growth, development, steady progress, are in evidence in California. This state is making phenomenal advancement. It makes the blood boll to note how much coddling those Turkish Nationalists get from the Allied powers. Premier Lloyd George's political enemies again are promoting him by attacking him and by demanding his downfall. Baseball alleged experts who, before the world's series, proved conclusively (on paper) that the Yankees would win the championship easily, have much to explain. Relief from heavy taxation is sorely needed here, there and everywhere. The World War entailed a burden upon this and other countries that, at best, is heavy and irksome. All the more reason why extreme care should be exercised, in making up municipal, county, state and national budgets, to keep governmental expenses down to the lowest limit compatible with sound and efficient administration of governmental affairs. The public moneys should not be wasted. There should be no extravagance, no mismanagement in outlay of the people's money. Every dollar drawn from the people in taxes should be handled with scrupulous honesty and with extreme business care and judgment. The people should demand this, and keep on demanding and enforcing their demands. Relief must come from the rigorous "Thou shalt!" of the people, hurled at those who are delegated by the people to exercise governmental authority—"Thou shalt" be economical and prudent in expenditures; "thou shalt not" waste or indulge in extravagance with public funds. AMERICA IS INVESTING MUCH ABROAD Spirited denial is made, by high officials at Washington, that the United States is parsimonious in withholding money from Europe. Investments totaling billions of dollars have been made in Europe by Americans since the World War and this with the sanction and encouragement of the United States government. These vast sums have been invested in peace projects, for the rehabilitation of Europe and for the development of peaceful industry there. The American government would discountenance only one form of investment or loan of American money—that is, a loan to any European power to foster militarism and un- Premier Lloyd George's political enemies again are promoting him by attacking him and by demanding his downfall. Baseball alleged experts who, before the world's series, proved conclusively (on paper) that the Yankees would win the championship easily, have much to explain. There is abundance of money in the United States seeking sound investment, as evidenced by the huge over-subscription of federal government bonds offered to take up portions of World War bond issues. This Nation is rich almost beyond computation. During this period of industrial peace, forces and influences should be at work to bring labor and capital into more harmonious relations. Every effort should be put forth by friends of labor and capital to devise satisfactory, equitable ways and means of settling industrial disputes without resorting to such extremes as strikes or lockouts. The rice industry in California is given impetus by action of the Federal War Finance Corporation in approving of the advancing of $4,000,000 to finance the orderly marketing of this state's rice crop. This should tide the growers over handsomely, so that they may sell their crops to the best advantage, when market conditions are most favorable. The American government would discountenance only one form of investment or loan of American money—that is, a loan to any European power to foster militarism and unwarranted preparations for unnecessary war. This country would not put itself in the position of encouraging militarism by providing it with financial sinews. But in all projects of peace and orderly development abroad American money is welcome and free to invest. Support every institution which promotes the physical, moral and mental weal of the young men and young women of the community. Death calls the extremely rich and powerful the same as the objectly poor and humble. The grave establishes a true democracy where there is absolute equality. Another way to make "better homes" is to cultivate better dispositions in the home. No matter how attractive, physically, a home may be, it is not the home it should be if husband and wife, or both, are chronically peevis hand grouchy around the fireside. An atmosphere of peace, love and gentleness is essential to the making of a real home. DODGE BROTHERS BUSINESS SEDAN With this car, Dodge Brothers have literally created a new type of sedan. They have combined open car ruggedness with closed car protection and smartness. They have demonstrated, once for all, that a sedan can be as practical and almost as inexpensive as an open touring car. The body is built of hand-welded steel because steel is sturdy, and will take a permanent, oven-baked finish, eliminating forever the cost of repainting. The seats are upholstered in attractive, genuine Spanish blue leather, because leather will wash and wear. The seats are upholstered in attractive, genuine Spanish blue leather, because leather will wash and wear. To further enlarge the car's usefulness, the rear seat, back and side cushions, seat frame and foot rest are quickly removable, giving sixty-four cubic feet of flat loading space in the rear compartment. The manifold uses made possible by this unique feature are readily imagined. The top and rear quarters are of non-rumble, fabric construction, conforming with the present attractive vogue. From cord tires to curtain cords, the fittings, inside and out, are distinctive and complete. In fact, every detail of the car emphasizes its striking adaptability as well as social u ALER Sunday Editor EDITORIAL TOWN IN REVIEW Sen. Borah is talking about a third party. Thunder, we've got so many parties now, an outsider never knows who to vote for. Some of the comments we have received regarding the appointment of an 87-year-old woman United States senator from Georgia: "Too young." "She'll put a little pep in that bunch." "She will feel right at home." "Hurray! One more progressive in the senate." "This gives the old ladies one more majority." "I hope she makes a four-hour speech every day." WHAT DO YOU EXPECT, ELECTION YEAR? Gas output breaks all records—News Item. Says Li'l Gyp Gyp, the office moocher; To keep it bobbed or let it grow, that is the question! This is a fine country, but Norway has a law compelling girls to learn to cook before they marry. FORD Henry Ford orders his foremen to speed up production and install new machinery so that the output of Fords will be 6000 a day by April 1, 1923. Allowing for Sundays, Ford will be able to turn out nearly 2,000,000 cars a year, the greatest industrial miracle of history. Ford is always expecting better and better business. And he gets it. PARAGRAPHS (By Robert Quillen) College: A coach entirely surrounded by enthusiasm. Perfect enunciation: Highbrow for clear speaking. Antonym: Gum. Now that ears are exposed again, they look almost as attractive as ankles did at first. If there must be war, let's have some press agents who can think up brand new atrocity stories. Correct this sentence: "He wasn't to blame in the least," said the girl; "it was all my fault." It isn't at all difficult to forgive an enemy after you have him thoroughly licked. Speaking of lucky days, there's the one on which America declined a mandate for Constantinople. Isn't it awful? Those modern sophisticated girls know everything their mothers knew at their age. India's method of judging a man by his caste is about as intelligent as our method of judging him by his cash. If the various blocs select the planks for the next political platforms, it might be all right to call them gang planks. Some people don't try to pile up a fortune because they still have hopes of getting slightly injured in a railway wreck. The movement for higher things hasn't been a complete failure. It has lifted the dance from the feet to the shoulders. WISE AND WITTY The reason the next world is so highly recommended is because we do not understand this one. A good undertaker is one who has reduced patience to a science. All things come to those who go out and fetch them in. WISE AND WITTY The reason the next world is so highly recommended is because we do not understand this one. A good undertaker is one who has reduced patience to a science. All things come to those who go out and fetch them in. Did you ever notice how cheap you can buy things you don't want? It is not what you get, but what you expect to get, that makes life worth while. Being kind is much more to your credit than merely being respectable. After a man attains wealth and "social eminence," ambition supplies nothing more except a change of glands and a seat in the senate. Politicians tell people what they ought to have, and then deliberately keep them from getting it. Predictions that you don't bet on are the ones that come true. No matter who is elected, you can figure on increased taxation. Ask yourself tonight if you are ashamed of anything you did today. A great deal of intelligence goes to waste because no use is made of it. Allowing for Sundays, Ford will be able to turn out nearly 2,000,000 cars a year, the greatest industrial miracle of history. Ford is always expecting better and better business. And he gets it—for many reasons, chief of which is that he never hypnotizes himself into stagnation by "anticipating" depression. In the long run, we usually get what we expect, no more, no less. A man is on anyone's level if he is on the level. England put up a "No Parking" sign in the Dardanelles and Turkey got mad when she received a traffic slip.
