Tuesday, October 3, 1922 THE ORANGE CO. PLAY SAN PEDRO AT MAIER PARK SUN. ANAHEIM baseball fans will get another chance to see the "locals cavort on a real ball field Sunday when they meet San Pedro Merchants at Maier Park, Vernon, in the last practice game for Anaheim before the championship game at Santa Monica, Thursday afternoon of next week for the state Elks' title. The San Pedro Merchants have just come out on top of the heap in the So. Cal., Baseball Managers Assn., defeating Sawtelle-last Sunday in the third of a three-game series for the title. This should indicate they're a fast bunch, entirely capable of giving the locals much-needed practice of the stiffest kind to put them on edge for the Santa Monica battle. Many local fans consider the maltreatment handed Anaheim last Sunday at Signal Hill by the fast Shell Oil Co., nine will put the old fighting spirit back into them. BEST PRELIMS YET AT ARENA FRIDAY Friday night's preliminaries at the Athletic Club's Arena promise to far eclipse any that Manager Billy Darnley has yet offered his patrons. There will be three snappy ones and there should be enough action to satisfy anyone. Bennie Heller, who has shown all of his old time form in his recent reappearance, at the local club is signed up with Art Springer a fighting soldier boy from Ross Field. Bennie and Art are old rivals—they having both started in the boxing game over at "Berdoo" a year ago last summer as proteges of Billy Darnley. Springer has made quite a rapid stride and is a good card at both Vernon and Hollywood clubs where he has appeared on the programs frequently with considerable success. Heller, on the other hand, suffered quite a reversal of form last Spring after going "Like a house Afire." But with a good long rest from ringwork he has started in again and his last two goes here indicated that the youngster was just about himself once more. He was the first boy to take a decision from that classy Plain Dealer. NEW TODAY WANTED—Girl for general housework. Private family. Apply box 25 Plain Dealer. PER CE Our company is purpose of making Springer has made quite a rapid stride and is a good card at both Vernon and Hollywood clubs where he has appeared on the programs frequently with considerable success. Heller, on the other hand, suffered quite a reversal of form last Spring after going "Like a house Alire." But with a good long rest from ringwork he has started in again and his last two goes here indicated that the youngster was just about himself once more. He was the first boy to take a decision from that classy PiK-centia youngster, Young Montoya. Bennie has always been a big favorite with fight fans wherever he has appeared on the card by his ready willing style of fighting. He and Springer promise to put up a whale of a battle. Our old friend, Tex Jones, is back on the job once again. Tex hasn't made an appearance since that fatal night of several weeks ago when Babe Orton, The Redlands Redskin, so ignobly administered a crushing defeat to him and caused Tex'of boy to ask, if all the women and children were saved. Tex is stacked up against a tough boy in this Pud Rebler lad and if he gets by with Reber, he wants another crack at 'Heap Big Injun' once more. A couple of husky 145 pounders are Max Ryan of Santa Ana and battling Scotty who hails from La Habra. They are scheduled to raise the strain and set the fireworks off paint. Joe Chahey and Young Attel-Scotty Beist and Joe Thomas who are to head the big double main event bill are all in active training and expect to be in the "pink" by Friday night to set a fast pace as is also our own Johnny McGraw, who is meeting clever rugged Packy McMullen in the Special Event at 125 pounds. Six bouts are carded and it looks like a large evening for sport fans here about Friday. ROY SHOWS WELL BY COMPARISON In comparing the records of Roy Mabee and Orlando Miller both of whom have met George Kinney on the mat, Mabee fought to a no fall draw. Miller won two out of three falls and states that Kinney is about the toughest bird he ever tackled. Kinney won the first fall after 32 minutes of hard fighting. Miller won two consecutive falls in 12 and 4½ minutes, respectively. With this record, it shows that Miller will be no easy matman to wrestle. Roy is spending some very careful hours in training and is entirely over his injuries sustained to his knee and neck during the battle with Santel. One of Mabee's former partners of Oklahoma is now in Los Angeles and is working out with him. Some of his former eastern boosters are located in different towns here last summer as proteges of Billy Darley. "AUTHORS SERIES" SHOWN AT UNITED In offering entertainment and amusement to Anaheim, the new Lapted Theater, formerly Grand, will not overlook the educational value of pictures when it opens its doors to the public Saturday evening. One very interesting series of single reel subjects when it is announced has been purchased for presentation here, is the "Great American Authors' Series." Each picture is a pictorial biography of the author, showing his birthplace and the scenes that inspired his greatest work. Then in each case one of the most famous stories or poems of the author is dramatized and brought to life on the screen. The American authors pictured in this series include: John Greenlief Whittler, Washington Irving Edgar Allen Poe, Oliver Wendell Holmes, William Cullen Bryant, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mark Twain, James Fenimore Cooper, James Russell Lowell, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman. SIGN LAUGUAGE TO SENTENCE BEGGAR LOS ANGELES, Oct. 4 — Sentencing Ray Williams, a deaf mute, required a great deal of handwork on the part of Judge Hugh J. Crawford in the University police court today. Williams was arrested by Officer M. Carty of Gardena for begging on a public street and brought to trial in Judge Crawford's court. He entered a plea of guilty, after reading the complaint, but wrote that he did not know there was a law against soliciting. The judge replied in the deaf mutes' sign language that if he would promise not to do it again he would give him a suspended sentence of 50 days. TWO LOCAL ELKS IN WORLD SERIES Anaheim interest in the world's series, as last year, is heightened by the fact that two of the championship contestants are members of the Anaheim Elks lodge. These are the brothers Bob Meusel of the Yanks and Emil "Irish" Meusel of the Giants. Both are wellknown here, two years ago playing with what is now the Anaheim Elks team.
