DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR MR. FORD MAY RUN FOR READERS
In every carest life there are weary flats to tread, with the heavens out of sight—no sun, no moon, and not a hint of light upon the path below; when the only guidance is the faith of brighter hours, and the secret Hand we are too numb and dark to feel. But it is not always so.
James Martincau.
National grudges, misunderstandings and suspicious breed wars.
Government in this country should be by the masses, not by classes.
Patriotism should be as deep as the profoundest emotions of the human heart.

The wages of lolly are high, and it demands frequent paydays, with remorse, sometimes disaster, as paymaster.
If you believe that prosperity is coming and work to that end, your belief and your works will help to bring it to pass.

Neither the stage nor the screen should exploit anybody whose chief claim to distinction is that he or she has been involved in a scandal.
THE PRESIDENCY
The business man in politics may be the distinction of the 1924 Presidential contest. Washington correspondents are convincing themselves and endeavoring to convince the public that Henry Ford is to be an avowed candidate for the presidency two years hence. They profess to find numerous evidences of Mr. Ford's intentions. Inasmuch as he did consent to become a candidate for the United States Senate and inasmuch as he is smarting because of the results of that contest and seeks vindication before the people, it does not seem improbable that he may be an active candidate.
And should Mr. Ford enter the presidential lists, it will be a merry campaign, never doubt. While paragraphers and his opponents would spring jokes innumerable about him and his well-known manufactured product, yet his candidacy ultimately would become serious. For Henry Ford is not a joke. In business, he is a genius whose success has been and is phenomenal. He holds to principle and pursues methods which appeal favorably to vast numbers of his countrymen. Should be seek the presidency in earnest, his opponents would be wel aware that he was in the running before the campaign ended.
DEADLY RECEPTION FOR BANK ROBBERS
Down in the little mountain town of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, they do things thoroughly, when it comes to suppressing banditry. Five would-be robbers, heavily armed, rode into Eureka Springs in two automobiles, bent upon robbing the First National Bank. This was near noon. In a few minutes after the employes of the bank had been made to deliver more than 100,000 in cash and bonds, citizens were firing upon the robbers.

Politics should not blind men with prejudice or passion. One may be a loyal adherent of a political party and yet not be narrow, bigoted partisan.

Eighteen persons were killed and scores injured in one week-end from auto accidents in the United States. Here is a menace that is becoming almost as great as war. The casualties from traffic accidents in this country in one year outnumber the total American casualties in the war with Spain.

Five would-be robbers, heavily armed, rode into Eureka Springs in two automobiles, bent upon robbing the First National Bank. This was near noon. In a few minutes after the employees of the bank had been made to deliver more than 100,000 in cash and bonds, citizens were firing upon the robbers as they attempted to escape. A cashier in the bank had stepped on a button and this had given the alarm. Two of the bandits were killed, another mortally wounded and the other two were wounded and captured. It was a clean sweep, and no citizen was injured in the battle.
In Los Angeles, a few weeks ago, robbers weret met with a deadly fusilade from officers. Such methods discourage banditry. Desperadoes of that type are potential murderers. They go armed, ready to kill upon the slightest provocation. Hence, to slay them is only to follow the law of Nature—self-preservation.
The good fruits of the treaties and agreements framed at the Arms Conference are coming into evidence. That these compacts will faster peace among the great powers, and through them among the smaller powers, is well assured.

NEED UNIFORM COMMERCIAL LAWS
Sacramento Bee
That there should be general agreement between the laws of the several states of the union with respect to commercial and some other matters scarcely should need argument.
Yet such uniformity makes but slow progress, despite the fact that their long has been a national conference of commissioners to promote that object, in which nearly all the states now have membership. About 25 years ago our Legislature provided for the appointment of California Commissioners, but later the act was repealed, and this state since has had no representation in the conference.
California, however, at various times, has adapted several laws framed or approved by the national conference, with respect to warehouse receipts, negotiable instruments, and bill of lading.
But our Legislature has failed or refused to enact various other laws of a uniform nature recommended by the national conference and the California Bar Ass'n, relative to sales of goods, partnerships and transfers of stock.
The inaction on the part of the lawmakers is attributed to indifference and absorption in other matters, rather than to actual opposition to the measures proposed. Lack of attention from commercial organizations also, probably had something to do with it.
Chambers of Commerce throughout the nation are now showing interest in the desirability of uniform legislation along the lines indicated in the foregoing.
The chamber at San Francisco has just adopted a resolution to that effect, and, rather curiously, in so doing has called upon the State Bar Ass'n to "co-operate," seemingly quite overlooking the fact that the association has been urging such legislation for a dozen years past, as the Dally Record of that city points out.
Only a few months ago, in a publication of that same chamber, Judge Jeremiah F. Sullivan, president of the San Francisco Bar Ass'n, urged all commercial bodies in the state to accord the California Bar Ass'n full support in its efforts to obtain enactment by our legislature of such laws as the state association has proposed in this regard, at the same time calling attention to "the importance of having the laws of all the states affecting business transactions made uniform in their provisions."
There is no occasion for surmise.
